You’ve all seen the movie of this tragic love story, filled with passion and pure love straight from Romeo and Juliet. Which is also filled with hate and senseless bigotry, between an American born gang, the Jets from Manhattan, NY and the Sharks, who are Puerto Rican immigrants, just trying to find their own place in the same neighborhood. Tony and Maria are two lovers from two different cultures who will never be accepted by their surroundings. Defiant passion in the face of prejudice has the couple planning on fleeing to the countryside as a way out, but the gangs have other plans and will allow no way in. As the orchestra guides the cast through the wonderful musical scores, the dancing is phenomenal with ballet, swag, leaps and the snapping of fingers, the performers are constantly bursting into either song or dance and my eyes literally never left the stage. Even though I knew it was coming, when Tony got shot, I was so startled by the loud blast that I screamed out, «Oh, my God, no!» thank heavens the folks surrounding me laughed, while I apologized for my outburst. The ending of course is tragic as Maria holds Tony’s body and asks the gangs if they have had enough hate and enough death, just make sure you save one last bullet for me If you haven’t seen West Side Story, do yourself a favor and make sure you bring plenty of tissues. West Side Story is a Broadway musical that is one of the most significant contributions of American culture to the arts.
