I don’t know what the previous rater is talking about, the owner is a great guy and I have been going to this shop for years. The rater is right in that the shop is messy and it is clearly not some fancy sporting goods store. That is the charm of the place! There are not many places like this left in NJ, they have all been pushed out by the gun lobby and high end stores. I have moved out of the area, but always make a point of stopping at the Owls Nest when I come back from time to time. This is an old gem and it is like walking into a hunting shop from a bygone era. I’m afraid when this store and the few others close as the owners retire, a great piece of Americana will be lost at least in NJ. Make a point of going to the Owls Nest, if you can’t get into a nice conversation with the owner or other customers about hunting or fishing than perhaps the problem is with you.

I’ve got to agree with Chris A’s review. Not only is the owner a great guy, but he knows the area really well. If you’re hunting deer, ask him for locations. If your a trapper, he’ll help introduce you to some farmers that would love to have you on their property. Compared to some of the big box stores, he may be a little pricey, but it’s worth it if you have questions. The pimple faced kid at Dick’s won’t be able to help you choose the right arrows for your bow. The only reason I don’t give this place 5 stars, is because it certainly could use some cleaning up inside.
