Best hot dogs I’ve ever ate! The first time I ever went in the was scared! It’s not very nice at all inside but the hot dogs are too good not to go back! The guy always working isn’t the friendliest but oh well!

In an area with some of the best dog joints around, Toby’s Cup is #4 on my list. A deep fried dog served MOP mustard-onion-pickle style. They serve a basic roll out of the bag. Toby’s Cup would have tied with my #2 pick The Original Jimmy’s if they steamed there rolls. There is limited of parking and no room to eat inside. There is a picnic table outside or eat in your car like most. Tip. Lines can be long at peak times Tip. Cash only

Great local hot dog joint with the dogs having a nice snap to them. Don’t expect fries so order an extra dog and opt for the thick shakes. Use caution pulling in or out of the place as traffic flies by.

As they used to say, you can’t eat atmosphere, so if you’re looking for fine china and lighting this isn’t the place for you. However, 3 hot dogs and a birch beer wont cost you more than $ 4 which says a lot. Eat em at the table in the parking lot, that’s all I have to say.

No muss, no fuss. Hot dogs fried, buns steamed. The works is the only way to go(yellow mustard, white onion, and dill pickle spears). The steaks are better than most, and will satisfy those looking for a cheese steak fix. The thick shakes are a must as well. I’ve been eating at Toby’s for about 15 years, nothing has changed and I hope it never does.

I don’t understand the hype about this place. I’ve been there a number of times and have never found anything outstanding. Hot dogs? I’ve had better, Jimmy’s. Hamburgers? I’ve had better, McDonalds. Cheesesteaks? I’ve had better, Joe’s & Chrissy’s. Fries? I’ve had better, almost any place else. Sorry folks, just cannot recommend it.

Have passed by here many times and wondered about this odd looking place. I thought the cup was either coffee or chile. Of course I didn’t notice the hot dog on the sign! Well today I checked the Unilocal reviews and stopped in for a hot dog. What a pleasant surprise! I had a nice chili dog with onions and a birch beer. The hot dog was really tasty and put those ordinary hot dogs from the store to shame. Must be really good seasoning that they are made of. Someone else on Unilocal compared them to Hot Dog Johnnys(rt 46 in Buttzville) and I would say these are as good at least!

used to be a great place to get cheesesteaks and hotdogs. don’t know if their buying cheaper meat or what but the steaks have gone rappidly downhill. chewy and lots of fat in the steaks. i stopped going here because the guy behind the counter always acted like he was doing you a favor by having you give him your cash. i now go to joes on south main st. better steaks and no attitude.

3.25 to be exact. Toby’s Cup has a lot of history, as the establishment has been around for the longest time. This place is a true landmark spot in this part of New Jersey. The place literally looks like a shack. Nothing special about it’s looks or interior. The place does look like it is 50+ years old and is basically a shack with a sign«Toby’s Cup» on top. However, there is a reason though this place has been around so long, and it is because it does deliver in some good fried hot dogs. This is one of the better tasting hot dogs I’ve had but I definitely have had better(since I live in an area where Rutt’s Hut and Hot Grill is easily accessible). I did try a bite of the cheese steak as well and that was okay. Nothing too special with that. You also cannot go wrong with their shakes as well if you are craving something with your sweet tooth. As you can imagine with a place like this, it is CASHONLY. Props to the owner though for keeping this establishment around for a long time. If you are in an area for a quick bite, then definitely come by Toby’s Cup and get a hot dog.

Years ago this was my go to for a good steak sandwich. Last week my son and I had an errand to run in Phillipsburg, it was lunch time so I suggested Toby’s so he could try the steak sandwiches that I remember being so good. Couldn’t was to eat it. Well disappointed to say the least. I took a bite and noticed a foul taste, took a second bite… The steaks had a nasty, bad off taste and were extremely greasy and grizzly. Seriously we could not even eat them, what a waste of money. Toby’s doesn’t even deserve 1 star, will never return I still have the bad taste in my mouth.

My 100th review! I figured I would be writing about some high end establishment. But an article on Ledger interfered with my agenda. The good folks at the Star Ledger have been criss crossing the state destroying their colons so I don’t have to. In the best deep fried dog category, Toby’s Cup was runner up to Rutt’s Hut. Since my son and I planned to hike nearby in Harmony, we switched around our lunch plans and went over to Toby’s which I have passed countless times since I was a boy. Much has been written about the owner. We found him to be terse and business like. No Soup Nazi experience for us. I assume that as long as you don’t go into vapor lock at the counter trying to order you will be just fine. The dogs were excellent with a great snap. Better than Hot Dog Johnny’s in my opinion. The schmear of chili was nice too. Not as good as Fathers and Sons in Linden but what is? My son really enjoyed his vanilla shake. Toby’s Cup was doing a brisk business today. No wonder. Really good eats at a fair price.

Jennifer B, you said it, girl! She’s spot on, read below. If you don’t mind smelling like you worked in their hood less kitchen, then stand like a happy little sardine next to a gum ball machine and some people you don’t know for 3 – 5 minutes, be ready with your order, have cash and order at least one of each of the following: hot dog with pickles, cheese steak hot, cheeseburger, chocolate milk and then I dare you to order fries! I saw that once, only once, but I long for that laughter as much as I long for those perfect dogs. Beer, Football, Wrestling and Toby’s dogs, that’s Phillipsburg. No gourmet dining here, just cheese steaks, deep fried dogs and great memories. I’ve gone there since before I could walk, I’ve created hot dog recipes and even helped open a truck in LA run by my friend, but no hotdog will ever be as benchmark as Toby’s will. I return every time I’m back in my Home town of Phillipsburg.

Maybe the 2nd best hot dog place in the greater P-Burg/Alpha area(and with Charlie’s Pool Room closed, the best open at the moment) — but don’t let that fool you, they are also top five in New Jersey. Up there with Rutt’s Hut, etc. Fat tried(but at a lower temp than Rutt’s — no «rippers» here) with a pickle slice, onions and mustard is «everything». Steaks are quite good, but not the best in town. Cheese burgers are a pleasant add on, but not that special. Did I mention they have hot dogs? Get the hot dogs. Milk shakes come in two«sizes» — regular and thick. That makes sense, right? Local favorite A-Treat soda will round out your meal, which will be placed in several brown paper bags. The building itself is a wonderfully strange round structure, with a weird scary clown on the side. You won’t miss it, and don’t.

Hilarious and totally«Deep Jersey» culture here. If you keep your expectations low and don’t act like George Constanza did in «The Soup Nazi» episode of Seinfeld, you’ll do fine. Just know what you want in advance, speak clearly and simply, pay your money, and gratefully walk away. These unique deep-fried hotdogs are definitely cravable. The grumpy guy at the counter plops the dogs into his oil vat by hand, places ‘em in yummy buns, slathers them in mustard, and adds the lovely pickle strands that make it all crunchy-savory-tart frankfurter perfection. No, it ain’t Beluga caviar served with crème fraîche on a baguette — it’s a hotdog, folks. Whaddya want? I asked the guy who Toby was. «Is he the original founder?» «He’s no one,» was the answer. «Nobody.» I got the feeling it would be a good idea if I’d kept my wiseguy trap shut and asked no more unnecessary, smarta** questions. This is Jersey, after all, «yous guys.»

Stopped for a dog and a thick chocolate. Dog was hot, fried on a steamed bun with just the right amount of mustard and onions. The pickle slice was on top. I am not a big fan of that as it overwhelms the dog flavor. Milkshake was top notch. The counter guy joked that I will get the milkshake by the time they close. I told em I hope for their sake they are closing soon… Location is right off of 22. They have one picnic table outside. Plan to be inside for your order but eat outdoors or take away.

Stopped here on my way back from Bethlehem, Pa. This was my first time trying it out. First off, any business that has survived 50 yrs deserves some props. The place is a local landmark, Thats why I knew I needed to stop and try a dog out. I thought the hot dog was ok. It’s a fried dog… but was not as well done as Rutt’s Huts’ hot dog. This was my first time having a hot dog with pickle and raw onion on it. It was not the best hot dog I have ever had, but was interesting and tasted good… personally my favorite was Callahan’s(closed) in Fort Lee, NJ. I grew up on Callahan’s. All in all, I’m glad I was able to stop at another classic NJ hot dog spot.
