Cool event for some good causes. The event outgrew it’s former digs at the Roosevelt pocket park and is now held at the Phoenix Union’s Bioscience High School at 6th St & Pierce. Portions of the proceeds benefit the Roosevelt Row Neighborhood Coalition and the Bioscience High School. I showed up at the 2pm opening to beat the crowd. Smart move as the line got pretty long shortly thereafter. Admission here was $ 10 for 5 pie tastings or bring two non-cream based pies of your own to share with the masses. In addition to regular Joes and Janes bringing pies to this event, a number of valley chefs bring their own creations. This year there were chefs from valley hot spots such as Crêpe Bar, Welcome Diner, JoBot, Grassroots Kitchen, Liberty Market, Jewel’s Bakery, and Bakery PHX among others. Once you paid up front, you got a paper plate, fork and napkin that you use for all your samples. The Jane and Joe pies were sliced and served by the Bioscience students near the front, while the chefs were setup in a row inside the gymnasium. First mistake I made was only getting 5 tastings. Granted I have a bigger appetite than most, but if you’re coming and have an appetite like mine, I’d fork over $ 20 for ten tastings. Trust me, there’s way too many good pies here to try. I was going to go back and get more tasting tickets but the line was crazy long by the time I did so I didn’t bother this go around. What I did get this time was a banana crème with Oreo cookie crust, a dutch apple with walnut caramel ice cream, a traditional cherry pie, a tortilla tart pie with a tortilla crust and lemon-lime tart filling, and blackberry pie with raspberry and white chocolate topping. Yeah, I know, sounds intense, but don’t worry the slices aren’t too big. There was also a local dairy co-op there handing out free glasses of milk(great for washing down all that pie). Aside from needing to do a better job keeping the lines of people moving, this is a pretty cool event and the Bioscience High School is a nice neighborhood venue for it. And again, for a pair of good causes. So leave your diets at the door and dig in!
