Exercise Warehouse Gym

Exercise Warehouse is a great gym that is full of people who are serious about fitness. Even when it is crowded, I never have trouble getting my workout in and never feel suffocated, like I do at some commercial gyms. While a bit outdated, the equipment is painstakingly maintained and the entire facility is sparkling clean. The entire staff is very friendly, and the owner, Mark, takes the time to personally chat with every single member and ask them if they need any support. I do wish that there were some smaller bumper plates (the smallest ones are 15kg/​30lbs) so that I could warm up with a lower weight and would like to see the weekend hours extended until 5/​6pm (they close at 4 on Saturday and 2 on Sunday). The décor in the gym is super funky and cool –the walls are covered with newspaper clippings, memorabilia, posters, magazine covers, etc. I also appreciate the funny signs that remind people to be respectful, wipe their sweat and stop being a general sissy. There is no A/​C, but even on a 90+ degree day, the temperature wasn’t terrible with the doors open and fans running. Yeah, you’ll sweat, but you should be sweating anyways! Parking on the street is usually easy and there is also a small parking lot in the rear of the facility. If you are looking to do primarily cardio or plyometrics, this is not the gym for you (there are a handful of bikes/​treadmills and no step mill) as Exercise Warehouse is primarily a bodybuilding/​free weight gym and also offers boxing. Overall, a great facility that allows me to ‘get in the zone’ mentally!

I was a member at this gym for six months. For the most part, my time there was enjoyable. The gym is pretty small, but has everything you’ll need, leaving me pretty satisfied with the gym itself.
Sadly, I cannot recommend this gym to anyone as long as the trainer Dan works there. Dan would swear at me during sets, talk about me behind my back, and leave equipment all over the gym. Sorry not everyone wants to do incline bench in one of the two squat racks.
I know I wasn’t the only one who felt disrespected by this man and he is the reason I took my business down the street.

This is an excellent gym for those looking to use free weights and weight machines near Bloomfield, Lawrenceville, or Polish Hill. There are a few treadmills and bikes, and I’m sure I’ll find myself grinding away on one come winter, but this is not your swimmer’s gym. For men, membership is $ 100 for three months, women get a slightly reduced rate. In the mornings and afternoons, you basically have the place to yourself, but things get a little messy with overtraining would-​be bros in the evenings.
You overhear some terrific sh*t talking: «Now you look at the boots on your typical state trooper. They’re shiny, real nice, right? They’re made up, got the flashy gear. Now you look at your city cop. His boots are broke in. His gear is used. His shirt’s faded, because he WORKS. Put a state cop in a traffic jam… now put your city cop there – what happens? Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for the state police my uncle…» etc.
The walls are plastered with personalized messages to the Exercise Wearhouse from Italian American actors, Mr. Olympias, and Super Man, fantastic magazine cutouts of Arnold, and bold 72 point Hobo font messages on how, at least this is my takeaway (sorry ladies), not to be a p*ssy. Use the gym/​machines like a GENTLEMAN. Two showers and a saloon style crapper in the locker room. The only drawback is that «YOU MUST WEAR A SHIRT AT ALL TIMES.»
Classic banter; classic Bloomfield, «selling health and fitness instead of booze, drugs, and gamblin.» A cultural fitness experience.

Love this place. Just joined today. No air conditioning, free weights and no one is there to be seen by their neighbor like commercial gyms.
