I’m just starting to get into archery, so I’ve visited half a dozen stores looking for good bows. Aside from 1 major big-box store, Phil’s had the best selection of recurve bows in the Pgh area. In addition to [relatively] cheap beginner bows, he also carries top-of-the-line brands like Bear and Samick, which are gorgeous bows I’d love to get one day. Phil helped me pick out a bow to try, strung it, and let me shoot until I tired. He also gave me some beginners tips on stance and form. There was no pressure to buy, and he encouraged me to stay until they closed if I wanted to. As a closing note– Phil’s Archery is an old store. I don’t know when it opened, but I feel it would go great next to a Woolworth’s. Old wooden display stands, small aisles, dense product placement, etc. Don’t let any of that dissuade you from giving this place a shot. In addition to bows, there’s a good selection of fishing gear, guns, and other hunting equipment. If and when I finally decide to pull the trigger on a bow purchase, Phil’s will definitely have my business.

This is one of the best archery shops in the area. Unfortunately, most people get started with archery by visiting one of the chain sporting good stores. Most of the staff at these places are give an example, I went to Gander Mountain a few weeks ago and asked if they had any«serving». The kid in the archery department had no idea what that was! When I visited Phil’s the next day this question wasn’t a problem. I think the main reason to come here is that they will help fit a bow to you. They will take the time to help you become a better shooter by stating you with a well tuned how. They also sell brands and gear the big box stores don’t. This place can get a little busy on Saturdays so I recommend going on a weekday.
