And to think that a few days prior, it was 60 degrees outside. Global warming is making our weather schizophrenic. Mother Earth is having violent mood swings. Icy Norwegian black metal masters Immortal descended upon Pittsburgh last Monday night at Mr. Smalls. Did they bring the snowstorm with them or was it a coincidence? Watch this video, read some of their lyrics and song titles. Decide for yourself… Meteorologists even failed to accurately predict the its severity, for it came earlier and harsher than expected. With little warning, Darren W. and Kay H. had found themselves battling to survive, for Pittsburgh had become… «A GRIMANDFROSTBITTENKINGDOM» Part 1. The plan was for Lady Kay to pick me up from work two hours early. We were to eat at a Millvale restaurant I had been wanting to Unilocal and then make our way to Mr. Smalls to catch the titanic Immortal in concert. Kay was nervous about the weather. I had been checking the reports. It wasn’t supposed to fall until after midnight. I thought we’d be ok. At 4PM, I go out on my break at work and find the snow falling. I call my mother to check Immortal’s Facebook page… «Two down, four to go. Both New York and Baltimore were awesome shows, tonight we’re in Millvale/Pittsburgh. Fittingly, there’s snow in the air and the venue is a modified church, so the gods of wrath will truly speak tonight.» No cancellations. Damn. I call Kay. She’s hesitant, fearful but agrees to come out anyway. At 6PM, I walk out the door and find that my city had become Niflheim. Cars treaded carefully or slid wildly out of control with no salt trucks in sight. After sitting in the Circle K parking lot for 15 minutes, we try to make it over. After coming close to wrecking the car twice, we left it in the Rite-Aid lot. It would have been very cool and ironic considering the festivities if it hadn’t made the roads as treacherous as a lackey of Darkseid.
