Groundworks Farm

We have had the Whole Farm Shares for both the winter and summer seasons for two years. The quality and quantity of the vegetables, eggs, chicken, meat and cheese have been consistently good. There is a wide variety in the types of vegetables available. We especially enjoy the convenience of the weekly pickups in the summer session and every two weeks pickups in the winter session in Arlington VA. (There are additional pickup sites in Alexandria VA, Annapolis MD and at the farm in PIttsville MD.) We have tried many of the different recipes which the farm distributes during each pickup. In addition, the farm store at each site offers an excellent selection of milk from pasture feed cows, yogurt, granola, salsa, coffee, root beer, sauerkraut, fruit and other items from local farms and producers.

Groundworks Farm offers members a wonderful opportunity to enjoy fresh food at a reasonable price. Since becoming a member I have been able to almost eliminate trips to the corporate grocery stores. I like supporting a small, local business. And I have access to – not only the fresh vegetables they produce – but also the thoughtfully sourced products they bring to the weekly (summer)/biweekly (winter) distribution. Everything from strawberries to lightly pasteurized, non-​homogenized milk… both of which make wonderful ice cream!

Groundworks Farm is the best! I’ve had a share (both summer and winter) since they came to the area from Vermont, and have never been disappointed. Each week’s vegetable share has a great variety of produce, and everything is much better (and much better priced) than equivalents from the grocery store. There are meat, chicken, egg and cheese shares available as well. Everything they sell is raised in a healthy, sustainable and ethical way. Each week the farm sends out an update with extras available at that week’s pickup – like fruit (peaches and berries in the summer, apples in the fall), milk, fair trade coffee, and other local products. The weekly emails also include recipes with suggestions for how to use less familiar ingredients. Two years ago I’d never tasted kohlrabi, now it is one of my favorite vegetables.
In addition the incredible food, the pickups (I attend the Alexandria pickup) are like a weekly party… there are always free cookies, and members often stick around to chat. Margaret and the other farmer staff members are always helpful and friendly.

We’ve bought winter shares; we’ve bought summer shares. We can’t imagine a season without the freshest produce imaginable… from local fields … delivered at a convenient pick-​up spot! The young farmers and their helpful families and friends are personable and knowledgeable. They even offer suggested recipes! Plus, lots of little extras: fresh butter, milk, eggs, even homemade granola and flowers in the summer. We’re a small family, so we also appreciate the opportunity to purchase half-​shares. It feels good to support a quality CSA program and its quality farmers!

This was our first time taking part of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program which is basically getting all our meat and produce directly from the farm. Groundworks offered a variety of affordable packages that fits any household or lifestyle. Overall we are very satisfied with the quality of food and variety of produce. Since the switch we have saved hundreds of dollars off our monthly grocery bill. We enjoy the fact that the food we are receiving and consuming is fresh and local.
