Beautiful hike. Early July the weather was perfect, 80 degrees. The hike itself is pretty easy, the climb can be a little taxing if you’re not used to the elevation. Be careful, I ran across a rattlesnake on my way to the 2nd smaller lake past Shealor.

I think this short 3 mile roundtrip hike is the best initiation hike for Sierra newbie hikers or newbie overnight backpackers. The lake at the end of the trail is the reward so bring a lunch, a beer, a doobie, or whatever floats your boat while enjoying the lake and scenery. There is a nice spot to set up camp next to the lake which looks like people have been using. Went during July 2012 and there was nobody else but another couple headed out while we were headed in. Gorgeous views of Silver Lake and surrounding area. I would go again if there was a newbie in our group or for a short day hike. **Pay attention to rock cairns as they lead the way**

If Shealor had some rocks outcroppings, it would deserve a 5 star. easy hike-in. plenty of smooth granite to roam around, chill, and enjoy the sunset. had 1 day hiker in our 3 day stay. would expect more from a 1.5 mile hike-in. Sightings of Grouse was a surprise. other smaller lakes below made for a nice day hike.

Shealor Lake Trailhead One of the first initiation hikes for this lady in recovery and for that, a little 3 mile hike round trip fit the mold nicely. Easily accessible from Hwy 88 and is a good starter hike for the virgin outdoor walker. There are no facilities at this trail so be prepared although there is a decent sized lot below. The start of the trail meanders through alpine groves as well as large granite rock that dots this landscape in an alien way. Once at the saddle, it is barely under 7600 ft altitude and not very trying on the lungs but the view it affords you is spectacular. From one point you can see Silver Lake and amazing peaks of surrounding wilderness. Once at lake level, it is pretty calm and perfect for picnics and even a dip in the lake if one is so inclined. It was warm facing the sun and the granite rocks are just warm enough to lie on. The trek back is slightly elevated but still comfortable. Just don’t veer off the path like I did and wear shorts. The manzanita bushes wreaked havoc on my bare legs in a crisscross pattern.
