The facilities are great. If you had asked me about this YMCA about 5 months ago, I would have recommended them wholeheartedly. Unfortunately, that is about where I am going to have to stop and change the course. The aquatics department if a complete disaster and has been a major disappointment for us in the past 5 months. We have been through 5 or 6 different swimming instructors, not by our choice, since we signed up for swim lessons. My children are 2 and 4⁄5 and are not at an age where changing instructors so often is good for their trust levels and confidence. The reason this has happened is because this facility cannot retain their employees. EVERY. SINGLE. PERSON. has quit. The worst party about it is that we have arrived for our lessons and no one has bothered to inform us ahead of time. We have sat waiting for our lessons, sometimes for upwards of 20 minutes, and no one has shown up. Now the Aquatics director has dodged phone calls from me, refused to get back to me or reimburse me for my numerous unfulfilled private lessons(which are very pricey) for over 6 weeks. We were even put into the swim team with my older son to make up for the missed swim lessons. And low and behold, the swim team instructor who has been there for around a decade quit!!! It’s the craziest thing I have ever seen! But, it only tells me they have some serious problems. I am greatly disappointed because it is a great building, only terrible management.

I love being a member of this YMCA, but it isn’t a perfect for me. From a family perspective, it is a real winner with tons of activities and classes for all ages, but from the perspective of an athlete, it isn’t very reliable. I really like the variety of classes that they have to offer from Body Pump and Spinning to a Master’s Swim Class. I am very excited that they are finally in the midst of construction because the indoor track and expanded cardio sections are really needed! My only beefs with the YMCA is that it can be really unreliable if you have a set training plan that you need to accomplish. Treadmills are often broken down, some have TVs, some don’t and often people let their young kids just play on the machines. They also host a variety of events which is awesome for kids and families, but it can overrun the place and the hours change and close with the weather and holidays. They also open late on Sundays and close early all weekend. I’m excited for all the construction to be complete because I think it will solve a lot of the issues I’ve had, but overall, I would never leave the YMCA because the staff is super friendly and helpful and they do a lot of good for the local community.

I love this Y, it’s great! The location is perfect in Platte City, easy to get to from all directions. It’s also close to I-29. Inside, there’s all kinds of great things to do. There’s a full-court basketball court which is almost length. In that room there are workout bikes, mainly used for exercise glasses which also take place in that court. There’s a large room for lifting weights, full of free weights, machines, and yoga/pilates materials. A room right next to this one is full of ellipticals, stair climbers, bikes, and treadmills. All the machines in both rooms are new and state-of-the-art! There is a 1⁄20th mile track around these 2 rooms as well. Next, there’s a near-Olympic size pool with a water slide, as well as an adjacent hot tub! Lastly, there’s a nice lounge with a flat panel TV complete with a beverage station containing coffee, hot chocolate, and water. The biggest downside to this Y is that the basketball court is used for exercise classes, limiting the court availability for basketball. The court is thus open more on Saturdays and Sundays than most weekdays. The staff here are super-friendly and get to know their customers on a first-name basis. Personal trainers are available consistently. Management is also nice. Now you can see Y I’m such a big fan of this Y!

This YMCA has a lot of different activities to do to help you keep in shape. From your treadmills to the indoor pool to the exercise classes there is something for everyone! For those that have children there is even a daycare area to drop your kids off while you workout. The workout spaces are well organized and have space for all the equipment that you could ever need. I would recommend joining if you want to add options into your workout!

My wife and I belong to the YMCA of Greater Kansas City and this is our local location. Overall, it’s a pretty nice gym with good machines and nice staff. There are a good number of Precor treadmills and elliptical machines, most of which are in really good shape and have individual television screens. My favorite machine – of which they have plenty – is the Precor EFX, the elliptical machine that allows you to alter the height of the elliptical path. I get bored easily on machines, so altering the height helps me keep myself interested and work out longer. I only wish they had more stationary bikes, especially ones that had individual television screens or else faced the larger TVs that are against one wall. This location has a nice pool for relaxing and for kids to play, but it’s not too practical for those wanting to lap swim. There are only two lanes for lap swimming, and when they aren’t taken up by a class, the children playing in the wade pool and on the water slide tend to cross into one of the lanes. They are supposed to be building a bigger pool with more lanes, a lazy river, and more water slides – much like the Parkville Y, which has a great pool – but I haven’t seen any evidence yet of construction. Overall it’s a fine gym and we enjoy being members.
