This spot has a nice atmosphere. They have two menu options, regular menu and BBQ menu. For the BBQ menu, you pick your food options, they bring them to you and you cook your food on the grill at your table. I ordered off of the regular menu. The regular menu includes sushi and cooked Asian dishes. I say«Asian» generally as they have a variety of different types of dishes. Maybe this is part of the problem. They haven’t quite decided what type of food place they should be. I ordered a cooked meal and a sushi role. Partially because I was curious to see where they thrive and partially from my indecisiveness. I ordered a Dynamite roll and Szechuan Kung Pao steak. I was able to taste the sesame chicken and the dragon roll from my date. I’ll start with the sushi rolls. The dynamite roll was okay. Decent enough I guess. Nothing special but not horrible. The dragon roll however, was not so tasty. It lacks flavor and needs more unagi. The Szechuan Kung Pao steak lacks flavor and was overcooked. The orange chicken was rather dry. While the ambiance is nice, this place is still struggling to figure out its identity. Or at least that’s how it seems.

Review is based on the sushi menu. The food is ok. The food itself is worthy of 2.5 stars. It is overpriced imo relative to the quality. The reason for only one star is due to the negative experience we had as customers. My wife and I ordered the king crab avocado roll along with 2 other rolls and some sashimi. The king crab had to be shelled and didn’t reach our table until after we had already finished the rest of our meal. We weren’t in a big hurry so we were ok with that, although I can’t imagine why it would take so long to shell a few pieces of crab. When we received it we ate two pieces(it wasn’t very good to begin with) and the next piece my wife ate had a piece of crab shell about an inch long and half inch wide. We both cringed, but were willing to overlook this until I bit into my next piece and several small shards of crab shell were in mine as well. We addressed this with the server and she spoke to the manager. The manager never felt the need to address us and sent the server back with a $ 5 gift card. Really? She said that since it is fresh crab there is expected to be some shell left in it. I’m sorry, but no it isn’t. The server continually tried to justify this mistake by saying it is normal. If that is the standard for which this restaurant sets their level of quality, I’ll pass. After I refused to pay for this item, they eventually took it off the bill. Needless to say, we’ll not be visiting this restaurant again. They appeared to be more interested in keeping the $ 10 charge on my bill than doing the right thing. I feel like I should comment that the server was actually really nice and helpful throughout the meal, but her attempt to treat me like a fool and convince me that a crab roll is supposed to have shell in it it is ridiculous.

Food is good, but service can be a little slow. Eaten here several times now and definitely plan on going back.

I can’t believe I haven’t tried this place sooner. I am greatly disappointed at my friends for not sharing this gem with me! Not knowing where to even begin, I’ll just get right to the best part… the food. The food was fantastic in which it was flavorful, well dressed, and came with so many great side options. We got the Kobe party meal for 4 which came with so much more food than we actually needed to eat. Everything tasted so fresh and the place was so clean. The service was wonderful as well. Everyone from the host to our own server was welcoming and informative. I NEED to come here more often because we hardly even made a dent in the menu and the options are so vast!

Lol. Decided to get some sushi @ 8pm on a Monday night, we walk in and there are no clients around just servers. I ask, are you closing, he said yes soon. What time? 10pm. hmmm So we sat down I looked at the sushi bar not even a chef around and half of the sushi was wrapped up like they had ran out. One minute later we got up and walked out. No thanks.

I have been searching everywhere for a place similar to Korean BBQ in Minnesota. I believe this is it! I was told that it’s actually Japanese BBQ but it’s still a great experience to cool your own food that’s already prepared and ready to grill. If you want to dine here, I would say you should definitely make reservations. It can be a long waiting time if you do not. Pricing? It’s much on the pricier side and kind of reminds me of a Benihana. For my boyfriend and I, we spent about $ 75 on everything. The my server was great and truly want to make sure you have great experience that will make you come back. I would recommend that you bring a sweater in case you get cold in restaurants. I know I got super chilly and left my jacket on. Recommend? Yes!

Sakana sushi & Japanese BBQ, finally gave it a try after I’ve heard some reviews from friends. Some loved some hated. Of course if we compare it to California or Las Vegas dining it will never be as good. I recommend making reservations because there’s only a few grills and it gets super packed. We got seated right away but it took 10 minutes to get water and another 20 to put in out order!!! Service is horrible but the waitress said she was new and her first night working a busy dinner shift. There are packages for the BBQ. Dinner for 2,4,&6. The pricing is high compared to other places I’ve eaten at but given this is Minnesota & one of the first BBQ places to open up. The soup & salad were delicious! Best I’ve had actually. Our dinner for 2 came with soup, salad, tuna, BMW roll, 3 different meats, and shrimp. Our sushi roll was served with no soy sauce… ok we asked for soy & she came back 15 min later with it. There was lots of waiting for service with this waitress. I couldn’t get mad though, she had the entire back room full of customers and only her to serve. The food was flavorful, cane with sides that was unlimited. Only downfall is it didn’t come with any dipping sauces like your traditional BBQ places but it was still good. I’d recommend giving it a try. There is more than enough good you will get full. This will definitely help cure your cravings if you’re missing food on the west coast.

I went there because my Korean friend said they have Korean BBQ which I love. But found out to be a n Asian(con)fusion! I ordered sushi and«Japanese«BBQ, filet and shabu. It’s great to have that Korean BBQ table but not authentic at all. For me those lots of small plates vegetables are very very important but they are very poor. Meat seems fair bit one piece of sushi(I ordered some 6 pcs) I guess hamachi was obviously not fresh from smell. Service was a bit slow considering it was not crowded at all that time and I was with only one friend of mine. Well I will be there again to try other Korean foods. From menu I guess I go back with more guys and order dinner for 4 or 6. Should be fun to fill that Korean BBQ table with friends.

Minnesotas first Japanese/korean bbq. We did the 2 for 75 with a side of pork belly. We started off with the miso soup and salad. The miso soup was warm, it wasn’t hot. So warm that the seaweed in it wouldn’t even unravel :/ As for the salad, I don’t really care for salads but it came with a ginger dressing. We also got hot tea that was warm tea. . Next we had the peppered tuna which was great, nice, thick, and juicy. Mmm. Followed by the bmw roll. Now it got to this point where I realized we didn’t get soy sauce trays cause they already put the soy sauce on our roll. .?that’s a little weird and I’ve never seem it done like that anywhere before. The roll was okay. I felt like you couldn’t really taste the fish cause the fried texture takes away all of the attention. Not really a roll I would order but it was good. Now, on to the good stuff! The price of this package is actually really good considering you get shrimp. I’ve been to a couple places like this in Chicago and I feel like this price is a little over priced, but it is the first one in Minnesota, so you might as well bank off of it. You get 4 sides, a paste, kimchi, pickled cucumber(the skin is still on-which makes it bitter), and jalapeños and garlic. The package also comes with lettuce so you can wrap it and an assorted veggie dish to grill. The meats are already pre-marinated. Some of the cuts are very thick while some are very thin. The meats are fresh, as well as veggies, which is nice. Marinade is good, you can definately still taste it after its cooked. After you’re meal is done you get to make smores for dessert. It’s a little weird cause they just take off the top of the grill and you make it inside of the grill but it works. Now, I have to say this place is kind of hidden. Their wooden seats do not have padding or cushions. So eat fast before your butt stats to hurt!

I ate here on Wednesday evening while I was in the twin-cities area for business. The sashimi was fantastic(fresh and nice portions). I’ve never heard of some of the rolls, perhaps I’m a sushi purist. Staff were polite and kept us satisfied.

I went here for lunch with some friends. We ordered the $ 145 combo as it was recommended by our server. The server for our table was extremely friendly and informative. He was very active and often asks us how we were doing. Honestly, he is probably the best server I ever had in years. The food here was also very good. I’d say that it is on par with the food in Socal or maybe even better, especially the fried rice(it was super delicious). I’d definitively come here again when I visit Minneapolis.

I was super excited when I found out about this place. Finally an open grill restaurant! I’ll take it. Sure I can do it at home, but it’s really about the experience for me. First off I went with 5 family members on the day before July 4th. We reserved it at 11:30AM for lunch. Once we were there, we looked through the menu, and found that they had different course options for large groups. There was one for 2 people, 4 people, and 6 people. The price for the courses were really fair — seeing that we can split it among 6 people. In addition there were la carte options. We decided to go with the 4 people course and ordered additional dishes and sushi on the side in addition with some drinks :). Any who, the course came with two plates of sushi and miso soups. We also ordered two rolls off their sushi menu, not knowing we’d get sushi with the course meal — but not a biggie. When all the ingredients finally came around, we were sooo excited. We got a lot of meat! There must have been about 6 plates of meat: beef, chicken, shrimp, and squid. The portion size was also very good. The meat was marinated just right. The squid was probably my least favorite — as it didn’t have much flavor and got too hard to chew once we cooked it. We got a few small side dishes of pickled potatoes, seaweed, cucumbers, among a some others that I can’t recall. It’s not the same as Korean side dishes, but not going to complain. Our server was also amazing! He was really informative and took care of our grill when it needed to be changed. He was also also responsive to our needs :) For being the first place in MN to have this type of dining experience, I think they are doing it right. Granted we did go right in the morning when it was slow and quiet. So I’d be curious to experience it again in the evening and when it’s busy.

I went there for the Japanese BBQ. First one in MN is what that waitress told me. EVERYONEITISNOTKOREANBBQ. I just want to make that clear. There is a difference between the two. Well, we ordered off the a la carte menu. Their menu also offers a selection based on how many people you were with. We wanted more of a certain type of mean(pork belly) and thats why we did a la carte. We ordered the kalbi and pork belly(it was cut pretty thick, I’m not use to it since I normally go get korean bbq and they slice it thinly). We got it both in the miso marinate, which is similar to the korean red sauce, gochujang. I thought the portion was a little steam for the price $ 8-$ 9. I think $ 5-$ 6 would of been more appropriate. There were no sauce to dip your meat in afterwards. I was hoping there was something but nope, nada! They did provide lettuce to make it into a lettuce wrap. In the end they give you stuff to make smores and I thought that was a nice touch. Service was pretty slow and we didn’t go when it was busy. There were only two other tables. Had to call the waitress over a few times but then again the waitress was also the bartender. The waitress was very nice though. I wouldn’t go back. I can make my own korean bbq at home and it would taste better and be much more affordable. I guess I’m not a japanese bbq kinda person…

Summary: — Japanese BBQ is delicious and unique in MN — Sushi rolls during happy hour and inexpensive and fresh — Service was good — Getting Asian BBQ used to require going on a mythical after long pilgrimages to places like far-away places Los Angeles, Atlanta, or DC. It seems that my prayers have been answered because I can now get delicious grilled meats in my back yard. You may not be able to tell over this text but I WASANDAMSOEXCITED! Sakana did not disappoint. I came with my mom on a random Tuesday night and got seated immediately at the BBQ table. I WASSTARVING cause I had just run six miles. The restaurant was sparsely packed, but my only thought was that it meant the food would come out faster. The waiter, who ended up speaking Chinese with us, informed us that it was happy hour. Hell yeah. I went ham and ordered a sashimi sampler, a salmon roll, galbi beef short ribs, scallops, asparagus, and sweet potatoes. The sushi and sashimi came out pretty fast and I was satisfied with the freshness of it. The waiter brought out little bon chon dishes(side dishes in Korean) of kimchi radish, preserved cucumbers, soybean paste, and some lettuce for wrapping up the meats. Can you say free refills? Then, the stuff to grill came and I was drooling. The beef grilled quickly was excellently tender. The scallops were equally delicious and the asparagus was great. We grilled the food ourselves but that wasn’t really a problem cause I’ve done it many times before, though newbies may want to ask for a little help on cooking times. Cooking the meats and veggies myself definitely made me more invested in it, adding to the enjoyment. In the end, the check wasn’t too expensive for the quantities of food that we ordered. Unilocal even provided me with a 10% off coupon for checking in at the location. Go Unilocal.Overall, I think this has become one of my favorite restaurants in Plymouth, allowing me to get me degenerate fix of KBBQ(technically JBBQ but I’m not sure what the difference is) and Sushi.

CONGRATULATIONSMN for finally opening a KBBQ/JBBQ! It’s the first in MN and I can’t wait until they open more. 4 stars for the service here! Everyone was super nice and you can tell they worked as a team. We had our waters filled before it hit half empty. Empty plates were taken away very quickly. Now to get to what is even more important is the food! We came here with 2, so we ordered their meal for 2. It came with the miso soup and salad– which, I honestly didn’t really care for. The soup was nothing special and same goes for the salad. Next came the sushi tool and tuna– the sushi was okay(BMW roll). It wouldn’t be something I specially come in and order. The tuna was delicious! I would of ordered more of that for sure! Next came out all the meat! — I want to say that the meat we had for 2 was pretty basic for KBBQ. It was sliced nice and thin. More importantly the meat was nice and tender! The only downside to all of this is that there were only 3 types of sauces :(! They all tasted like they came out of a bottle. The last thing you get is the s’mores! I thought this was really weird thing to mix into your meal. Give this place a try! It’s an experience you won’t forget!

You’ll leave Sakana with a skip in your step and a happy tummy. An all-around solid sushi joint. I swung in for a few rolls on HH for dinner, wasn’t feeling one of the 100 chain/fast food places over populating the suburbs. My experience from start to finish was so enjoyable and tasty! People — Friendly. Attentive(even when I was only drinking water). Quick. Sushi — Fresh. Great flavors. Heavy on fish, light on the rice. Great deals on rolls for HH. Spicy salmon/tuna/yellowtail 6 piece rolls for $ 4.95. Speciality 8 piece rolls for $ 10. Ginger was the best I’ve had; I could eat a bowl of it! Environment — Lively, but not obnoxious. Trendy for a suburb. I will be going again and again. Try them out! You won’t regret it. Plus that are adding a Japanese grill. More great culinary adventures to be offered soon!

On our way to Dave and Busters in Maple Grove, we decided to Unilocal a good restaurant we’ve never tried before. Sakana had great ratings and we were hungry for sushi but we couldn’t believe we’d never heard of it before! We were in luck to discover we had 30 minutes of happy hour and lots of specials to choose from when we bellied up to the sushi bar. We chose two 5-piece Sushi Samplers, a Spicy Salmon roll(with cucumber and avocado), a Spicy Girl roll(special roll on HH special), and a Yellowtail Jalapeño roll. We also got edamame and two glasses of house HH wine. The sushi chefs were polite but not overly friendly and by fluke did give us a nice complimentary app of Fluke Fish slightly toasted. It was really good and a first for us! The cuts of meat were outstanding portions, the best I’ve had in the Twin Cities! I’m not a big fan of Yellowtail because of its slightly fishier flavor but this was the first time I’ve had Yellowtail so sweet and fresh I loved it. I can’t believe that with all of the sushi we got(we are big eaters and we were gorged) plus the wine only came to $ 51. What a great deal! We’ll be back for sure!
