I am a sucker for plantation homes. Louisiana has many beautiful examples that have been restored to their former glory and are open to public tours. Harlem Plantation is not one of them. In fact, Harlem is in such sad shape, I fear for its future. I first learned of Harlem when I was researching abandoned locations thought the state for photo shoot locations. I was struck by the beauty of Harlem despite its sad state of repair and knew I must see it. Harlem is located right off of the river road in lower Plaquemines. I had never driven down this particular stretch of roadway so each passing mile was more exciting than the last. The information about Harlem’s location was sketchy at best so I was quite surprised when I saw it sitting there directly adjacent to the roadway. There it was, a mere fraction of what it once was. Despite that, it was truly beautiful. Father Time and Mother. Nature had thrown their best at this old girl, but she still maintained that elegant look and class that only an antebellum home could have. Since I am a law abiding citizen, I was unable to go inside(there’s a gate), but I extensively photographed the sides and front porch from the roadway. I sure wish someone with resources could bring this old beauty back to its former glory. Note: If you decide to go, it’s worth the trip. It is rather far from the city, but where else can you see something this cool?
