I was involved in a complicated motorcycle accident involving an unlicensed driver in an insured automobile. The case concerned a complex accident investigation and other dealings with a combative insurance company. Due to Mr. Amendt’s detailed research and presentation, the case was resolved short of the courtroom with a substantial settlement that I was quite pleased with. Proceed with extreme caution.
I used Mr. Amendt for my personal injury case. I found his persona to be friendly, warm, and often insightful. I was ecstatic when he was able negotiate a settlement with my insurance company. I was less ecstatic when he shoved almost 70% of that settlement in his own wallet. Although his standard contract entitlements him to roughly 33%, the remainder of what was pillaged came from expense items that were either erroneous or blatant falsehoods.
For example, while Mr. Amendt required US to pay the court’s filing fee, this amount was still deducted from HIS expenses. Other items such as a «background check» with employment verification, when properly researched, yielded no evidence that such a check was ever conducted. Funny story, one of the companies they claim provided employment verification to them as part of this service had an office staff consisting only of me, which made this one pretty damn easy to conclude as false since I don’t recall having ever received that call. Other expenses were purely fluff – videotaping the deposition at a cost of $ 400. No videographer, mind you, the cost was purely setting their own 1980s VHS video camera on a tripod and clicking «REC».
I made repeated attempts to receive clarification on these expenses, and even provided a copy of the check given to the court as a filing fee to prove that these expenses were in error, but once Amendt had his portion of the settlement, my calls, emails, and even faxes when completely unreturned by his staff.
While it’s laughable to me to think of the creative energy that was involved in skimming every dollar of my settlement, it’s frustrating to have been exploited in this way, particularly when this office requires you to do a lot of their heavy lifting. Instances where the case had hit a wall I found myself making phone calls, following leads, conducting research and then feeding it to his office to keep the case moving forward when they seemed to be sitting on their hands gathering «expenses».
