Very nice museum, especially considering you are not in a major city and funding for museums keeps getting slashed. Downstairs history was very good with several nice artifacts. Upstairs the halls of fame had great stories about many I did not know came from the region. Only wish Babe Zaharias was not stuck in the back. As others have said, don’t let the neighborhood push you away. We actually circled more than once and debated stopping. So glad we did!

Definitely worth the visit of you’re in the area! The surrounding city is a bit sketchy from a more recent storm, but the museum itself is small and cute — upstairs was my personal favorite since that’s where the geology and music memorabilia is. I walked in and started crying when I saw Janis Joplins replica Porsche(don’t know why). This museum takes a good 2 – 3 hours to go through and I enjoyed it with my boyfriend and his family when I visited.

A fun, kitschy little museum with several interesting things to see that make it well worth a visit and the $ 4 admission! First of all, largest indoor mural in the state depicting the history of Texas. Pretty cool. Janis Joplin section of the music area upstairs was interesting! The sports history section was interesting, too! I didn’t realize some of those athletes were from Port Arthur — including Jamaal Charles! It also had some very interesting photographs of the city’s early history. My boyfriend and I wanted to get out of Houston for the day, and enjoyed our trip to this little museum before heading to Sea Rim State Park!

I’d give this museum three stars if it were in say, Houston, but I’ll add a star given that its in a limited market and can afford to be skimpy. The admissions staffer looked very unprofessionally dressed and appointed, tired of our stuff the minute we walked in the door. I caught several misspelled words throughout the displays, many of which were wholly unimpressive and generalized. There were a few interactive displays which were the only things able to capture the attention of my 10 year old brother. The upstairs area focuses mostly on local celebrities, which is nice enough, and had been updated with recent happenings like George Jones’ death(RIP Possum) and Jamaal Charles’ position in the NFL.(Hook ‘Em) The gift shop was not bad. My aforementioned brother found two guitar picks for .75 total with the museum’s logo on them, and one even glowed in the dark! This was the highlight of his day. When asked what he learned from the museum, he responded«that there’s a fish with two eyes on one side of its face.» Yes, kids, this is something on display there. Southeast Texans really need to get out more and take their kids to do something educational… so spend the really, really cheap admission fee($ 4 adults, $ 2 kids) and take the drive out to PAT.
