So let’s just get it out in the air — the portions are just plain olé ridiculous! The ice cream was good, the prices were fabulous and the portion sizes are obnoxiously huge. The baby cone is easily the size of a double anywhere else. If you make it a waffle cone you’ll get even more ice cream with a minor up charge. We had three babies and two kiddies(in waffle cones) which was easily more than a gallon of ice cream and walked away spending under $ 17. We saw none of the service problems others reported from a service standpoint the only issue we saw was they were a bit slow to scoop the cream, but then again the scoopers were literally getting a complete upper body workout with each cone they served(nope, not being cute here, I think it literally counts as a full fledged workout). The Grindstone City General Store is more of a social experience than an ice cream shop as its sold! The entire time that we were sitting outside the store pondering how in the world we’d finish the massive portion we were drawn like moths to a flame to watch the reaction of the next person to walk out the door. We made a lot of friends and found it to be a lot of fun to chat with all of our newfound friends about how crazy huge the portions were. The bad of visiting is that I really don’t want to eat ice cream again for a long time — and I love ice cream. It was fun, tasty, entertaining and we’ll be back again!

They weren’t kidding when they advertised themselves as having the biggest ice cream cones in the thumb – it might even have the biggest cones in the entire state. Basically, the smallest size = half a tub of ice cream you find in grocery stores, and the«2 scoops» size = 1 entire tub of ice cream. Their prices were unbeatable for so much ice cream, but I get the feeling that most of it goes to waste, which is unfortunate. Definitely suggest going with the smallest size unless you haven’t eaten in 3 days and want to eat something that will keep you full for the next 3 days. They have Dean’s ice cream but also a couple options that are made in-house. One of the ones that make themselves uses Bailey’s, which is pretty cool, but they ID you so make sure you have your license handy if you want to try it!

Wow, the ice cream and the amount that you are served is above and beyond! There were at least ten people in line ahead of us and about 50 in line behind us, almost out the door. Order the smallest amount especially on a warm day! We need one of these stores in Grand Rapids, MI

The best, biggest, and most surprising ice cream in the thumb or Michigan really. Order small it is a shame to waste the delights.

Huge servings of delicious ice cream! They have streamlined their checkout process and now the line moves very fast.

Definitely«hefty» size scoops, as they advertise, and reasonably priced. The«baby» size is easily three«normal» scoops. The ice cream itself is good, but not outstanding — of course, that could be the sugar rush still talking. I really liked the plastic cover they put on the(regular) cone; it helps steady the cone and it has a little well to catch any drippings. Ice cream seems to be the thing to do in Port Austin; several different people suggested it to me when I asked what there is of interest. As for the«general» store, it’s not really; it’s just a mishmash of knicknacks for sale — nothing you’d consider merchandise that a real general store would have.

They DO have the largest cones that I have ever seen. Sometimes I wish I could actually get just a small cone without throwing half of it away. We have been coming here for many years and just noticed lately the owner is getting a bad attitude. He’s not very friendly to his customers.

The ice cream here is AMAZING! There’s nothing better than Strohs on a hot summer day! Here’s a tip though– only order the baby in a waffle cone! It is so much ice cream, they definitely set the standard of what a «scoop» is!!!

Does not dissapoint. Now my GF who is the picky eater, does not eat big portions or really ice cream. So You kow it’s good if she asked to stop by again befoer we went home from vacation. The sizes are ridiculous, please look at the size scale on the wall or counter for help. My GF got the baby(which equals a large everywhere else) and i got the Kiddie(two scoops but really looks like a triple the scoops are so huge) They have Stroh’s but they also have home made ice cream that they make right in the shop. The insides is pretty bare bones. Just a couple things to look at while ur in line, for a «General Store» I expected more. But that’s just me. Maybe some old fashioned candy, some old style sodas, some touristy type souveniers or something would probably get them some more revenue,(not that they need it). It was packed the entire time we were there. Picnic tablesa re outside, but there were packed. So we took it back to the beack. You kow it’s a huge cone, when you have a 15 minute drive back to your hotel, You order ice cream, drive back taking your time, and manage to eat the ice cream cone through out the entire sunset. It was Good. Like Everyone else says– Go. Even just for the novelty of it.

A fun stop if you’re up in the Thumb. I had a two-dip«kiddie» size cone, which was massive. When they say«hefty scoops» of ice cream here, they really do mean it. I can’t imagine who could eat the five-dip«Tripple» cone. As Brian notes, there wasn’t much else in the store besides ice cream, snacks and a few pieces from local crafters. There are a few picnic tables with umbrellas out front, so it’s a nice place to stop and eat your ice cream cone on a hot day.

In Port Austin on vacation with the family. We were told that we must try this ice cream. It did not disappoint us.

Good strohs ice cream. Huge servings, good prices. Not much in store yet, local art that you see at a craft sale during your local high school craft sale. Odds and end snacks. I heard they just took over business and is redoing some. Go to bathroom before you get there unless you don’t mind a porta potty in the parking spots.
