I really enjoyed the time I spent here and did not have any expectations upon going to it. My husband picked this museum out for me because I am a fan of Great Lakes shipwreck history and there was an exhibit going on for the great storm of 1913. Although we only had 1 hour to check out the exhibits, I found the place very charming and I greatly enjoyed the maritime rooms. The gift shop was also very good and I found 5 more shipwreck books that I had not been able to find in other stores(yes, I know I can get them online).

Maybe I’m just blasé from having grown up in this town and visited this museum so many times, but I do feel it could be a bit more compelling. The toy exhibit they had a while back was pretty fun! Too bad this whole area was a shallow sea when dinosaurs roamed, or we might be able to see the bones of a dead creature or two. There’s some good local history, but you’ll learn the real fun secrets of this town outside of those walls. If all I were rating it on were content, it’d be more like three stars. There are, however, sometimes classes offered by the museum for childrens and adults that I feel are great. Especially for kids. My appreciation for art would have been stunted without this institution.

The Lives They Left Behind: Suitcases From A State Hospital Attic exhibit is well worth a visit. My group was on a short time line, so I did not have enough time to see all that I wanted to see. The volunteer at the front gave me a slip to return again to finish the exhibit without having to pay a second admission fee. I will be back to see the rest of the exhibit. I hope many others visit so that we can ensure history does not repeat itself. Sad & tragic the way so many were institutionalized for the majority of their adult lives even while their medical records indicated their behavior was normal.
