How I’m the first to review this county fair is beyond me. The folks behind the Jefferson County Fair outdid themselves. This fair is simply spectacular. Here are just a few of the things that make this a great fair. Cheap ticket price(which includes parking) Multi-day ticket includes the BBQ on Sunday. Tons of great food. Tons of interactive booths, both for children and adults. Great showcases for all the various 4-H and other clubs in the area. Great events, such as the horse pie eating contest(not as gross as it sounds), draft horse pulls, demolition derby, mud bog races, and tons of horse and dog demonstrations. The place is small enough that you can see everything and make it to every event you want to, without breaking a sweat or making you walk all over hell and gone. We were especially pleased that there were no carnival rides. Those things are usually run by a pretty sleazy crowd and our kids deserve better. Instead, the fair provided everything from cupcake decorating contests to rubber duckie races. But before you think this is just for kids, let me assure you that there is just as much for adults. I learned more about flowers, and Dahlias in particular, than I could have gotten from a weekend seminar thanks to all the knowledgeable folks in the flower pavilion.(Special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Smith for all the time they spent with us discussing the growing of Dahlias.) And I’d like to give a special shout-out to Port Townsend Paper for being there and having a great interactive booth. We were able to actually make a sheet of paper from scratch. I never knew how paper was made but within two minutes I not only understood but had made my own paper. All in all, this is an event you won’t want to miss. And I would highly recommend setting aside the whole weekend(maybe even all three days) in order to visit and get the most out of it.(The full event pass was only $ 15 and included a BBQ lunch which would have cost $ 10 on its own.) We went on both Saturday and Sunday and still didn’t get to see everything.
