Unilocal pointed us towards Fuji. Never would have stopped in without reading the reviews. Hidden in a strip mall. Windows covered with blinds. The interior is small, clean and organized. We tried several different rolls and had tempura. It was all delicious. We recommend this little gem.

Love this place the sushi is good and fresh only reason I’m giving it fours stars is because of the service can be a bit slow

I forgot to take a picture of my sushi again… I get so excited to start eating sushi I always forget to take a picture. I usually give high scores but I felt compelled to help this place out with a little constructive criticism. People in Portage actually appreciate good sushi. This place could be a lot busier if Fuji figured that out. By the way, the sushi was top notch!

The sushi is fabulous as is their cooked food. The prices are great and the service staff are kind and accommodating. We typically get a Philadelphia roll in addition to the lunch specials that they have. The fried rice is delicious as well. I highly recommend this place. It is definitely the best in Porter County.

Amazing sushi, some of the best in the region, and its a very quiet and relaxing environment. Easily one of the best places to eat in portage.

Sushi is pretty good, but the beef teriyaki was quite tough, and of the 4 pieces of sashimi I ate, 1 tasted unfresh. The servers were nice though they got me the wrong box initially. There’s no other option nearby but compared to Chicago it’s meh and the prices are up there with chicago’s sadly.

I was in town for a training course for solar. I looked up local places on Unilocal and saw the reviews for this place. There are some great sushi places where I am from in California and Fuji did not disappoint. I had the yellowtail with jalapeño and the Phoenix roll. Both were great. My buddy had the Dream roll and that had a great texture and taste. I was impressed by the quality and this place is a great find in NW Indiana.

Not the best, but very good for what they have to work with for being in the midwest. I love sushi and gave tasted sushi bars all over. If this place were in cali I would give them a 3, but they surly deserve an extra start for the location.

We just came from California and were looking for a good sushi place. I have to admit, I was skeptical about the quality and authenticity of a place in Portage. I will say that it was pretty darn tasty. The service was good, the selection is diverse, and the preparation was noteworthy. All in all, I was not disappointed and the food is pretty good for not being on the coast or in a major city. Would definitely eat here again.

I’m always skeptical when I see an Asian restaurant in northwest Indiana especially a sushi restaurant. I’ve had my share of many excellent Sushi restaurants in Chicago and in other big cities and to my surprise, Fuji impressed me. I went for lunch and had the chicken teriyaki bento box and a spicy tuna with avocado maki. Everything about $ 15 which included a miso soup, spring rolls, and salad. Food and service was wonderful, the dining area is quiet, chairs are fancy, décor very Asian. Wow, an authentic Japanese restaurant in NW Indiana! Will definitely be going back to try more of their rolls.

This place is just as good if not better than most of the sushi places in Chicago. The prices are certainly better than those places too. I’d go here over any place in Northwest Indiana. The staff is attentive and friendly. There’s almost always a place to sit.

When anyone ever asks me if I’d like to grab sushi, they’re usually thinking to go somewhere in the city, but Fugi is always the first place that comes to my mind. They’re sushi is easily 5 stars.(The dream roll is seriously to die for!) The only reason I gave them 4 stars is because the actual food is just okay, and they don’t have fountain soda, just cans. The last one is a bit of a selfish reason, but I love fountain soda! Overall if you’re a sushi lover Fugi is an absolute must!

A gem in the city of Portage, Indiana, you’d be silly not to try it. I’ve had some good sushi, and this ranks with the best of them on the staples. I love, love smoked salmon pieces, and they have big fat smoky pieces for a crazyfair price. The soup is good and the ownership/staff is straightup Japanese. The negs — décor is kinda weak. Rectangle table area in the middle of a stripmall. Also, not noted for any discernible drink selection, beyond Saporro. ^ digest all of that, then… Try this place. Tasty, overall. And speedy to-go orders.

I can not say enough amazing things about this place. The food is always fresh and exactly what you ordered. The staff are among some of the nicest people I’ve had the pleasure of being served by. I go here often and have no intention of stopping anytime soon.

We were frequently going here until our most recent visit disgusted us. There was hardly any rice on the sushi rolls you could see the seaweed right through the rice. Rice is so cheap too I was appalled. When I went to complain about the inadequate rolls & that I have never seen sushi made like this the lady was a smart aleck and said I must be use to buffets! So we left still hungry but paid $ 75.00 for our meal for family of 4. Never again they lost our business! House of Kobe or Chicago sushi joints from now on. Update: There is also a new place in Chesterton, IN called Musashi that’s much better!

My son & wife introduced me to Fuji’s. Very clean and service with a smile! Sushi was excellent. Very fresh. Well made. Impressed being in such a rural area. Next time visiting my son, will certainly return for more delicious sushi…

I’ve been coming here for a long time and if your in the valpo area this is the place to come for sushi. There chef here is always quick and makes very good rolls or traditional sashimi if you prefer that. I recommend drying the dream roll with eel sauce, beside sushi they have a large list of other dishes including youdon(spelled that wrong) and fried rice Japanese style which is delicious as well. Over all this is a great place to bring a large group that maybe doesn’t want a sushi only restaurant, a place that offers both cooked and raw dishes.

It’s difficult finding good sushi in NWI or should I say almost impossible. The atmosphere is reminiscent of the simplicity in Japanese culture; rebuking the motto of «less is more.» I’ve been here on at least 3 occasions and was never particularly impressed, however, it beat out local grocery store refrigerator sushi. So… when in portage… visit Fuji. It is mentionable that they serve delicious shrimp tempura. I’ve tried their dragon roll — delish, could be sooooo much fresher. Teriyaki Box — not worth the price by a long shot. California Rolls — The mainstay of sushi, not bad(no long letters home about it being riveting).

Decent place. Edamame and miso soup came out quick. Soup was good, edamame were hot but not salted well. The jalapeño roll was really good. 12 pieces was a good serving and was reasonably price. The biggest con is the no alcohol. Which in turn means no saki! I probably wouldn’t return for that reason alone, although the food and service were acceptable.
