I have been going here for years and have always loved it. It is under new ownership now and it has excelled everything else available in Northwest Indiana. Excellent quality of fish, very very fresh! Excellent sushi chef with a great presentation and a lovely staff that go out of their way to be helpful. I am so glad this is available to us.

Best restaurant in Portage! The fish is incredibly fresh, and every roll we’ve tried has been excellent. Consist good quality every time.

This place is amazing! I cannot find a better sushi place anywhere around here! The prices are reasonable and the staff is always very friendly. It’s worth the 40 minute drive for me.

My boyfriend & I frequent Fuji; not because it happens to be the ONLY decent sushi place in the NWI area, but because it is EXCELLENT! They have a very large selection of traditional & specialty sushi rolls and sashimi. The fish is fresh, the roll combinations are thoughtfully put together and the staff is very friendly. I have been eating sushi from a very young age & Fuji has some of he best sushi I’ve had & this is including Chicago and east/west coast cities. They also have great edamame, ginger salad & tempura. I always get sushi but I know others who have had regular entrees & were very pleased. It is a little disappointing that they are not BYOB, however, that does not stop us from having a great time. The food speaks for itself & is fairly priced. I would recommend Fuji to anyone looking for quality sushi. By the way, we visited BC Osaka in Merrillville once off a recommendation from a friend and I will never go back. The quality was horrible & I feel fortunate I did not get sick. I always leave Fuji satisfied!

This place is not BYOB anymore, because they don’t have license.

This place is not BYOB. They don’t even understand the concept and will not allow you to open wine in the restaurant. The service was also poor.

Fuji has some of the best sushi I’ve had. They have a wide variety of rolls that are very original and tasty. They also have other dishes on the menu if you don’t want sushi — pretty typical Japanese steakhouse kind of dishes. The service is also great — the chefs are pleasant and the lady who sat us was very sweet. The restaurant has been fairly quiet each time I’ve been, but I think it adds to the intimate atmosphere if you’re there on a date!

Review from my old profile(Sept. 2010): This is THE place to go for Sushi in NW Indiana. Have been going there for 2 years at least. The sushi is fabulous– there is a really wide variety– the prices are reasonable… and they remember their regular customers. House of Kobe is great for the flair– the whole show and atmosphere– but their sushi isn’t worth much. FUJI– has the best sushi that I have found in years(without going to downtown Chicago). The setting isn’t fancy– but the sushi is out of this world. I have sent so many people their way(as I am sure have many other regulars) that the place can get pretty busy these days– and they are not set up for a large crowd. But they deserve the recognition and I will never go elsewhere for sushi in NW Indiana. Gooo«Amy»(owner). We LOVE Fuji! (PS. they don’t serve alcohol, but if you run down to the liquor store in the same mall and pick up some Sake or bring some in on your own– they will gladly serve it for you!)

Good selection of sushi and the price is fair. Ingredients taste fresh. The place is dim and they always play weird music over the ceiling speakers. However, it is a good place to bring a female date to, since the place is pretty quiet and the waiter/waitress doesn’t bother you much.

I love their food but I am def. not a fan of their service. The lady who runs the place is very rude! Me & my friend were disappointed with the treatment, so look into getting it to-go!

The food is good but the woman who runs this place can get upset if it’s busy. When she gets busy she will get mad if you order additional food. Makes no sense because more food = more money. One draw back is no liquor sales and you can no longer bring it with you. Sushi is not the same without Saki. But it’s good sushi for the price.

You will not find a better sushi restaurant in Portage. Hah! The jalapeño roll was so snacky and delicious. I may be mistaken, but I think that was my first ever tempura fried jalapeño pepper. The prices were very reasonable and the service was friendly.

Terrible service. While my friends and I figured out the payment options at the register, the host apparently thought we were taking too long and started slamming menus and telling us it was time to go. I was in total disbelief. Then 2 of my amigos went to use the bathroom and she once again became very agitated and threatened to call the police. We paid what we owed and needless to say will never return to such a terrible place. Not to mention I lived in Japan for 2 years and asked her where she was from. She said this. Hong Kong, Japan. Ok…

We came back a few times since the first review, and it was pretty pleasant up until the last. We ordered the gyoza as we always do, it was great! Then the california roll came out and another one, I can’t remember the name now. But whatever it was it seemed a little off. Like it wasn’t fresh or something. I don’t know if it was just a one time thing or what, hopefully it was. But everything else was fine and I’d really like to continue coming here.

When I think of good sushi places, a hole in the wall in a Portage strip mall does not come to mind. Or at least it didn’t before I came to Fuji with a few friends. It was surprisingly good and I’m kicking myself for not trying it sooner. Don’t be thrown off by the location or the outside appearance. Inside Fuji is clean, neat and bright. The staff was very polite and friendly towards our group and that always a big plus with me. Their selection of rolls is amazing. The sushi was fresh and not cheap tasting like it can be at some NWI places. I would choose Fuji over Little Tokyo in Valpo every single time. Really bummed out that I didn’t try it sooner, but I know now that I’ll be going many many times in the future.

Umami! I absolutely love this place — the sushi is fresh and never tastes ‘fishy’, the service is friendly, the prices are very reasonable, and the presentation is lovely. Over many trips, I’ve tried the dragon roll, snow roll, ebi asparagus, butterfly, fancy, green river, and more that I can’t remember. Through all of these, I’ve never been disappointed. Their edamame is salted just enough, the miso has a good balance of ingredients, and the sushi looks like little jewels on a plate. The new menu is also a bonus, since pictures defintely help when choosing from foods that I’m not familiar with. I’ve become a loyal fan of Fuji, and will continue to go back at every opportunity.

My brother who lives in Merrillville recommended this place to me a few months ago, and after having drove past it for 20 years thinking it was a camera store, i stopped in today with my girl. Service was quick, very friendly, and attentive. it was after the lunch hour so there were only a few tables seated. The miso was good. The edamame, which i had never had served warm, were very good, and salted just right. The obligatory factory made squid salad which i am a huge fan of was served over a cucumber salad which added a new dimension of crunch to my delight. after long and tireless deliberation over their extensive list of roll options, i opted only for the hollywood roll which included soft shell crab, crab, unagi, with avocado, wrapped in tobiko, with several different spicy sauces drizzled about. excellent choice. my girl had a california roll and some unagi sushi which she enjoyed. we ordered chicken tempura for the little one along with some rangoon type app of some sort and both were very good. overall service was fast, it was a younger crowd both waiting and making sushi today. we spent about 54 bucks before tips, but the one roll was 16. very good choice for such an unassuming, unpretentious place.

Wow, excellent fresh sushi at very reasonable prices. This place lived up to expectations, and is a great value. We had the sushi-sashimi combo, chirashi, and chicken teriyaki bento box. All were excellent, and this place will benchmark Japanese cusine for us in Northwest Indiana. There’s not a lot of choices as far as we know(and we have tried House of Kobe in Merillville for the hibachi dining). Parking is very convenient, as it is in a strip mall. I have a thing for close restaurant parking. It’s also a BYOB place, and there are no charges for that. The dining room is one cozy room, with not a lot of tables(maybe 12 –15). The menu was extensive with a lot of choices, more than we’re used to seeing at a Japanese place. The hostess and waitress were courteous and friendly Chinese, but the food was definitely Japanese. It was a very enjoyable Valentine’s Day dinner for us.

Crazy amazing sushi at dirt cheap prices! Seriously, this place is a great sushi joint. All the rolls I’ve tried have been great and are beautifully prepared. Get the miso soup and edamame too! The servers are incredibly nice and attentive. We’ve been in a few times to celebrate birthdays/promotions and while I’m pretty sure we didn’t mention it within earshot, they brought out a cute pineapple dragon thing. Hard to explain unless you’ve seen it but delicious, I assure you. They might be BYOB but call ahead to make sure since I can’t remember.

Pretty much the only place I know of that you can get sushi in Portage. Pretty decent stuff as well. When I ordered we had Tempura and a California Roll sushi. The Tempura was pretty good, and I really liked the California Roll. The inside of the place is really cozy and atmospheric. Lots of Japanese style furniture and everything looks very authentic. I’d definitely recommend. Edit: Recently visited again. The owners are awesome and very helpful. I picked up a Godzilla this time around and it was like heaven in my mouth. Seriously. Price and quality is comparable(and in some cases better) than Chicago stuff, right here in portage. Excellent.
