I’m giving 4 stars for the happy hour only. They have a fantastic happy hour menu. I’ve been on the hunt for a great mac n cheese in Portland. My informal poll resulted in me awarded them the best Mac n cheese in town. They also have great deviled eggs on the hh menu. Sadly… Neither of those are on their regular menu. I am very dissatisfied with their regular menu(limited and overpriced). Service is only ok. Their holiday lighting is fantastic at Christmas time.

I’m usually not the« Unilocaling type» but I wanted to just comment on how much I love this place! I have only been twice, one for their drag brunch(which is just a pretty nice, regular brunch aside from the super awesome performances) and once for dinner last Friday. My fiancé and I had the cheese board, trout and the duck breast. WOW. Everything that came out was upping the game from some of the other«fancier» places on the block. The mood is really cool in here too, our server was nice and the bartender even came over to talk about our fav new«smoked» drink«The Lewis and Clark». The dessert menu could grow up a little bit but that’s really the only thing. Love the music! Thanks 23Hoyt!

Good food. Great service. Contemporary chic ambiance. I like this place. It has a very nice upscale feel. Fireplaces. Leather talking benches. Glass walls and black steel beam accents. Very nice place. I always rank restaurants with pricier menus harder. Thus the 4 stars for food and I tried to push them to five for great service. I came for a cocktail party and had just about every appetizer. From cheese balls, Brussels sprouts to scallops which were all awesome. But I felt the prosciutto cheese bread and salad were lacking. Bread was flat and the salad lacked that fresh crunch. The bar and mixed drinks were great. But why do they serve Pepsi??? Pepsi is just second rate and does not match the ambiance of the restaurant. So again, I tired to give them 5 stars and kept slipping along the way. I’ll be back to experience the rest. I sense and feel the recipes warrant something amazing on the menu. Let’s find out. Order with confidence.

A group of five of us came in for dinner on a Friday night. Great atmosphere and fantastic service. From the appetizers to dessert, the food was delicious. We shared the cheese plate and a salmon board, both of which were great. The salmon was cooked perfectly and came with a nasturtium pesto(highly recommended). I ordered the steak frites, which was excellent. The steak was perfectly cooked(rare). Several others in the group ordered the burger, which received rave reviews all around. For dessert, we shared some bread pudding, which was also excellent. This is a really nice spot on 23rd for either a date or a larger group. We were really impressed with the service and cuisine, and will definitely come back. Highly recommended.

Unilocal ate my lengthy review for some reason, and so i’ll just say this place rocks, i love the food, it’s quintessentially portland in its ambience and local ingredients. i’ve been eating here for 1.5 years, and firmly intend to continue doing so. i expect it might have an off night(or brunch) here or there, but the overwhelming experience is a good one, such that i consider it, bamboo sushi, swiss hibiscus and ned ludd my top four faves in this city, if that gives you any clues as to my tastes. i’m not easily impressed. the first time i ate there i had the cassoulet, and it was hands down the best i’d ever had – and i’d eaten it in paris and barcelona many times before this.

Great food matched by great drinks! The specialty cocktails are amazing good range of drinks with a great range of flavors, we ordered a couple of their tequila drinks A+. The server was knowledgeable and very graceful in guiding us through the menu and our dining experience, not uptight and stuffy as some other places in the area. The food was by far the best I’ve had in that area in quite sometime. The charcuterie board with local cheeses and house smoked duck breast was incredible. Cornmeal fried oysters were cooked perfectly and tasted amazing. Squid ink pasta with salmon caviar was the cherry on top! Amazing food and not as pricey as I thought being in this area. Hats off to the chef for being able to offer a wide range of great NW food without making me have to break my bank!

This restaurant is an excellent choice for a more upscale meal featuring contemporary American cuisine. Reservations are recommended on weekend nights — request a table upstairs as it is quieter with a more intimate feel. Wait staff has always been very prompt and knowledgeable. Their drink menu is pretty extensive, with our favorites being the warm cocktail options available in the fall and winter(get the West End Toddy). Food options are also really strong here with portions that are appropriate to pricing. Their steak frites is on the menu in the fall and winter and is very tasty. You have to get dessert here and order the donuts — they are served warm with an amazing chocolate dipping sauce. We are always very happy with our experience here and consider it among the best the NW neighborhood of Portland has to offer.

Struggle! They sent our food to the wrong table, and when it made it to us, it was ALL cold. Maybe it was a bad day, but for the location and the price, I expected a lot more!

Terrible, awful, no good, very bad night! Bad service! Bad food! Not just at our table but the one next to us. The man at the table next to us asked if there was a McDonalds close. He thought it might be better. At least my food would be hot he said. Our waiter told our table the kitchen was«dysfunctional». We waited forever on everything. We waited the longest on a grilled cheese sandwich! The bright spot was the bar. Super disappointed! I WOULDNOT recommend giving it a try.

A group of 8 of us plus 2 kids came from a duo birthday celebration. Everything was great until the food was to be delivered. First, 3 entrees were delivered to our table which matched out order. Those 3 immediately started snacking off these plates only to have the staff return moments later to say they were not our entrees but the tables next to us. About 5 minutes later they returned with 3 more entrees, all of which were not prepared as ordered. The waiter who brought them thought we were wrong and lifted the buns of the burger to check the toppings to confirm we were right. In a short enough time it was only possible to add the bacon to the burger and bring them back out he was back with them. The mushroom risotto was under cooked and sent back. The trout was poorly prepared and also sent back. One burger was asked for medium and raw to the touch and sent back. Three of the other burgers were all mixed in terms of temperature but at that point we just switched them amongst ourselves as we were hungry. We asked for the manager to come talk to us and after 30 minutes were told they were ‘too busy’ to talk to us. We saw open tables in a restaurant that can’t hold more than 60 – 70 at a time so we were a bit confused. Very bad experience will not be returning. Only silver lining was they did knock a few entrees off the bill. Kudos.

The food was not good at all. The pork chop was not fully cooked. They did refund me ½ of the dish. Potatoes were too oily. The crab cake smelled/tasted fishy. Even fries were bad. How can a restaurant like this be so bad and still survive in Portland? The staff was nice, but she could not check on us often. She was serving so many tables by herself. It was a Mother’s Day, so they had a fixed menu for $ 30/person. It was definitely not worth $ 30 per person. I won’t be going back for sure.

My boyfriend and I were visiting Portland this past weekend and we took his Mom here for Mother’s Day brunch. It was fantastic. We started with the goat cheese bruschetta and then I had the crab cakes benedict and he had the pork chops and eggs. We finished off the meal with donut holes dipped in salted caramel, banana bread with toffee topping, and chocolate cake. Everything was incredible! The service was on point and extremely friendly. We would definitely return if in the area again.

I came here for brunch with a group of friends when we were visiting Portland last weekend. I loved the décor and ambiance of the restaurant. It looked elegant & trendy, like a great date spot. They had a great $ 2 mimosa deal & I ordered the Eggs Benedict. The food was good, however, we waited FOREVER for our drinks, food & finally the bill. Our server was nice, but we had to track him down a few times to check on some of our orders. They couldn’t split the bill for groups either, so bring cash if you’re coming with a group of people.

I was just at this restaurant on Sunday, January 10th and I cannot express how good of an experience I had. My friends and I were wandering around the area, stumbled upon this place, and were warmly greeted as soon as we walked in. Roxanne seated us, poured our waters, chatted with us for a bit, then happily insisted we let her know if there’s anything we need. Roxanne followed up by telling us she was the manager(owner? I can’t remember which) and it threw us off in the best way possible. Restaurant managers in the Bay Area near SF so rarely assist customers themselves, and Roxanne was so social with us that it instantly made me want to write this review. Our server wasn’t quite as perky, but Roxanne’s upbeat attitude totally made it worth a visit and still warrants a five star rating. However, our server was great at noticing me cleaning a big drop of ketchup that fell on my shirt, and instantly came back with some club soda. My friends didn’t eat so I don’t have much of a comparison food-wise, but I got the 23Hoyt burger and it was so delicious. The fries were on point… everything just worked so well together. The meat was cooked the way I had asked, food was hot(I saw one review that said there’s wasn’t)…it was all just so worth it. The other items on the menu sounded so good, and I can only hope I end up here again. Anyway, I suggest going here. The way the restaurant was designed looked great– felt upscale but casual at the same time. It was such a relaxing, pleasant, and delicious lunch that I will definitely make it a point to stop here again the next time I’m in Portland.

Soooooo overrated! The restaurant is beautiful but the food and service are horrible. I’ve gone here several times so I know my experience wasn’t a fluke. WAY overpriced for the quality. The concept is awesome and everything on the menu SOUNDS delicious, but the execution is just not there. I’m not sure if it’s because they hire inexperienced chefs or what… But the service has never been good either though, so I feel like it could be the fault of poor management. The last time I was there with a group of people, we had to wait over 15 minutes for our table even though we had reservations. Then there were copious issues with the food(cold soup, nearly raw meat, horribly seasoned, etc). I was shocked by how much of a disaster it was although I’ve never had a good experience here. The waiter was super annoyed and barely even came to check on us. Some of our dishes were literally inedible and yet they didn’t even credit us, which we really expected with how horrible our experience was. Hopefully they are able to turn this place around because they really have a prime location and beautiful building with a lot of promise!

There’s a lot to love about this place – great location, lovely interior, good food, nice cocktail list. But every time I go in, I think«Oh yeah, this is why I don’t come here.» The reasons? First – the music. It’s too loud, and it works against the vibe of the place. I don’t want to have a cozy neighborhood dinner by candlelight and listen to the Smiths. Turn it down, and maybe pick something a little less clubby/loungy.(The people sitting next to me were all complaining about the music, too) Second – the TV screens. It’s not a sports bar. I know – nobody’s forcing me to look at the TV screens. It’s just cheap and weird and doesn’t at all fit with the loveliness of the place. Obviously a lot of thought has gone into this restaurant, so I wonder why they’d do these two things(music and TV) that so clearly work against everything else they’ve done. Third – the service is always a little off, as other people have mentioned. I stopped in on a weeknight, with terrible weather outside, and the place was half empty. Still the host asked me if I had a reservation & kept me standing around while he tried to get the computer to tell him if I could be seated. I get it – there might be several huge parties coming in any minute – but shouldn’t the host have some idea, on a slow night, of what the reservation situation is? Once I sat down, nobody came by to take an order. I didn’t have to wait forever, but I did have to wait long enough to think, «Hmmm, I wonder if I’m at one of those weird tables where all the waiters think I’m not in their section?»

I went here a couple years back and was not impressed. But now I am thrilled when I eat here. It is has become a regular spot for me and friends. The food is great and so is the atmosphere. I highly recommend this place for taking people from out of town. With all the amazing restaurants in Portland this one keeps the charm of the city while offering some level of sophistication. P. S. If you are dining alone sit up at the bar and enjoy their fantastic wine selection.

We came here after running a Half marathon and there was no wait to get seated. Drinks came out pretty quickly but the food was another story. First off, the prices seemed high for brunch, $ 18 set price for fairly normal sounding items. We all ordered and then proceeded to wait over an hour and a half to get our food. The waitress kept apologizing and bringing us more drinks, but we were starving after having run 13 miles! The place was not even full and our food was no where to be found. We also kept asking for more water and they were very slow to refill our bottle on the table. Once we finally got it, it was even more disappointing. The portions were tiny! I ordered chicken and waffles, and one normal size waffle came with 1 small chicken drumstick on top, which was VERYDRY. This was NOT worth $ 18 or the 90+ minute wait. Will definitely NOT come back here.

I’m not picky but this was a pretty awful experience. We came for brunch on a Sunday and it was busy, but the food took 40+ minutes to come out. When we did get it, the chicken and waffles was terrible. The chicken tasted off, like it was past the expiry date. When we told our server, he said it wasn’t the first time he had heard it that day. To his credit, he was empathetic and gave us a refund. Not sure what’s going on in the kitchen, but I won’t be finding out, since I won’t be back.

The food here is good. The service not so much. They just run on a different cadence and are not certain of how to drop plates for a dinner service Tonight felt very out of sorts. Not sure they knew they were open for dinner. We ordered donuts but left before they came because it felt like they weren’t coming. She even comped the donuts to make up for the poor dinner service.

Several months later, I’m back and you know what, it was the perfect last-meal-in-Portland(i.e. this is where I ate before going to PDX). My friend was able to easily make a reservation for three people for dinner on a Sunday at 7pm. We were seated downstairs and debated over a delicious sounding menu. I was craving fries for some reason, and so we ordered a side of them. I certainly didn’t expect a huge bowl of beautifully crispy fries to come to the table. It could have serve as a meal. It also came with garlic ability and ketchup. The garlic aoili was delicious, and I actually liked the subtle garlic flavor; fiercely garlicky flavoring is better appreciated on meat or sandwiches, not fries. Friend #1 ordered salmon fritters for her appetizer. These were surprisingly spicy, as jalapeños had been incorporated into the mix. We really enjoyed it though(I stole a taste!) and thought it was pretty creative. Friend #1 also ordered the kale salad with shaved brussel sprouts, sunflower seeds, goat cheese dressing, pickled apple, and watermelon radish($ 11). She enjoyed this, and the watermelon radish was beautiful. My main course, I ordered the Casarecce, which is a pasta dish with elk sugo(ground meat), pecorino romano, chili flake, and rosemary. This was $ 14 for smaller sized bowl(versus $ 20 for a larger portion) and I thought it was both DELICIOUS and very filling. It was the perfect comfort food for a rainy day, but was certainly elevated beyond the typical pasta-and-meat dish. Friend #2 ordered the New York Strip Steak with robuchon potatoes, grilled broccolini, truffle butter($ 30). The truffle butter was, of course, delicious and a big hit. Truffle butter should really be put on everything. As for drinks, there was a cider and ginger syrup on the menu that was originally alcohol laced(bourbon? or rum? I can’t remember), but I was in a hot drink mood, so my friend and I both requested that the drink be heated, and I ordered a virgin. Absolutely delicious. Overall, we had no complaints about our meal. Very good food, friendly service, and a beautiful environment. I’m happy we came back!

We’ve since been back to try again, albeit for drinks and appetizers only. We were happy to get an attentive server this time around. The drinks were great and our appetizers were quite good as well. The atmosphere is cool. We’ll definitely be back for a full dinner! To the owner: I don’t remember the servers name, or the day other than it was the weekend. Anyway, we had fun this time around, and are looking forward to trying it out again. Thanks!

23 Hoyt is one of the best looking restaurants in the neighborhood. There was clearly a lot of thought invested in the aesthetic of the building, but there is little to maintain appearances as indicated by a tall plastic potted plant that hasn’t been dusted in a month. Or when my partner unfurls his napkin to be greeted by a cloud of dust. When the food is on point at 23 Hoyt, it’s one of the most delicious brunches you’ll ever have, but too often something goes wrong like salty eggs, basic potatoes, or undercooked bacon. Even more confusing is how a simple brunch can take almost half an hour to be delivered when the restaurant has never had more than half its capacity when I’ve gone in. I don’t know if this has to do with the chefs, or the sweet, but spacey servers. They’re perfectly nice boys, but often forgetful, inattentive, and not very gifted as waiters. I’ve had my order repeated back to me wrong(twice) before leaving my table, and take up to ten minutes to come by for my order when the restaurant is all but dead. This place should be packed for brunch, but I’m starting to wonder if it’s a very pricey front or if I should go elsewhere. Until I try the fresh whipped cream made for the Belgian waffles, or that perfectly grilled piece of toast and I’m hooked. I hope 23 Hoyt can whip themselves into shape because a restaurant this quality shouldn’t be this frustrating.

We were walking on 23rd and decided to on pop in. The décor here is AMAZING, I LOVEDIT. I had 2 drinks here, the«Portland Rose» and the«Modern 23». I want to write to the magazine«Bön Appetite» and fan girl gush on how amazing the drinks were. For one thing, the names of their bar drinks were very dreamy and creative. I ALMOST ordered based on the names, but then I read ‘ohhh whiskey… nope’ lol. The drink descriptions were tiny little alcohol based poems that let me feel I could trust my first instinct. I trusted them so well I ordered a 2nd drink. We sat at the bar and our bartender was awkward at first but he was super accommodating. I want to say his name was Corey, or Will or «Dude with large bushy beard who worked Sat 9⁄12 and forgot to send our fry order to the kitchen» He was great. He clearly had a great relationship with the couple next to us. I felt the bar prices were reasonable. I wish I took more photos of the place. The dress code was very relaxed. If I were ever in Portland again, I would def stop by :)

I’ve been here several times for cocktails and they’re always on point. Today was a different story. Walked in, not busy. No acknowledgement for at least 3 minutes while I stood at the door. Got seated by Gerrin, who was pleasant enough but certainly didn’t go out of his way to glance over to see how we’re were doing or if we needed anything. I ordered a side caesar to start, which was good. The burger tasted of nothing but hot mustard and the fries were so salty they burned my tongue. I’m a pretty laid back chick. If you look at all of my reviews I’m a very fair person. I told Gerrin about the burger and he came back saying they’d take half off the burger and then asks me if that’s ok. Ok? No it’s not ok but now I feel awkward and kinda bitchy at this point. We were there for an hour, probably most of which was spent waiting for anyone to just come over to us. Terribly customer service and handling of a customers order that didn’t come out the way it should have in the first place. It’s obvious they don’t care of guest satisfaction.

I was visiting in town for a few days and someone recommended this as a great place to eat. I saw that it had average ratings but still wanted to check it out. The vibe and look of the place is very trend/hipster like. I was greeted by a very bearded man at the front who sat us immediately and was very friendly. He even helped with bringing drinks/appetizers out. The waiter was nice and knowledgable. I tried a couple local beers which were excellent! We had the friend oysters which were ok(very fishy on first bite). We also had the fava beans which were the best! Flavorful, grilled and had nice little flower petals on it. I had the halibut for a entrée which was a A+(lightweight and great size for a meal), my mom had the pork chop which she liked but it was the amount of food for 2 people or a 200 lb man. We also had the apple crisp for dessert which was the perfect end to an evening.

Oh gosh 23 Hoyt, how I want to live here. It’s woodsy, rustic elegance is the perfect setting for all things amazing. I’ve walked by numerous times thinking that 23 Hoyt was out of my league, but all I had to do was walk up to it and ask. The dramatic height and fall of the curtains at the entrance make you feel as if you’ve arrived. Venturing further in you see the pieces of chopped wood adorn the sill of the windows and the waxed coated candelabras sit high and dramatically along the bar. The restaurant is rather spacious offering up various methods of dining, from table sit down, to the bar, to the luxurious lounge area tucked towards the back. Makes you want to experience this place day or night. The service was on point! Our server was incredibly attentive, relaxed and knowledgable. My friend and I were only able to dine there for brunch but my goodness, no lines, no two hour wait and amazing food? I’ll take it! I ordered the steak and eggs while my friend ordered the corned beef hash. The steak was perfectly cooked and well seasoned, the potatoes were soft inside and crispy on the outside. I had a bite of my friends hash which in one bite had me convinced it was one of the best corned beff hashes I’ve ever tasted. That one bite consisted of a perfectly cooked, soft potato with an amazing piece of corned beef hash which was generous in size, and the accompaniment of great seasoning. The orange juice tasted fresh squeezed and was so perfectly sweet and refreshing all at once! The cherry on top of this whole experience was checking into 23 Hoyt on Unilocal, and seeing the $ 5 dollars of any $ 30 bill! It’s like getting a present whenever an offer pops up on check-in’s!

While visiting Portland, we ate an early dinner at 23 Hoyt one night. We were with our family(mom and Grandma), and were seated right away. Nice décor inside, the artwork and arrangements throughout the restaurant create an inviting space. We were mulling over the menu and discussing ordering some small plates to share since no one was«entrée hungry», and thankfully I jumped on Unilocal to look for recommendations, because it was happy hour but no one working there bothered to tell us or offer us a happy hour menu. Annoying. Thankfully we asked and the menus were brought to us, because all of the food was really cheap on the happy hour menu. We got a bunch of small stuff to share. Liked the deviled eggs, they have a little bit of kick to them. The hummus was ok, but seriously, it was $ 1 on happy hour, so wasn’t expecting a lot there. The wedge salad was better than I thought it would be, good dressing but not a lot of cucumber, it was really just a wedge of lettuce. Mom got the chicken liver pâté and really enjoyed it. The service was spotty, not awesome. It was sort of crowded, but our server was not to be described as attentive. And I’m still annoyed about not letting us know it was happy hour when we were clearly ordering small plates! Would I go back? Maybe. I wouldn’t rush back, but if someone I was with wanted to go there I wouldn’t dread it.
