Alive Mma

After years of dreaming about doing Boxing I decided it was time to take the plunge and join a gym. I spent about two weeks doing research on-​line checking several review sites to help narrow it down to my top two choices. I chose to check out the Alive MMA gym first, as one thing that stood out to me was most of the reviews had mentioned how it felt more like a family then a gym you just go to. I can’t even begin to tell you how true every single one of those reviews were.
I walked in to this gym thinking how I didn’t belong, how I am getting to old (I am 34 not to old), basically all those horrible self-​doubting thoughts that pop-​up and stops a person in their tracks. Then Ali came up and asked if he could help, right away I wanted to panic and say I was in the wrong place and apologize for wasting his time. I didn’t, instead I squeaked out how I was interested in taking Boxing Lessons.
Ali starts giving me a tour of the whole place showing off the Crossfit area and explaining how those classes work. Next we got into the Boxing area, I had came during a class time so I could see what it was like. Ali at that point introduced me to one of the coaches Jimbo, then proceeded to tell me a bit about him and the other two coaches for boxing Sean and Andy. We moved over to the punching bag and MMA section following it up with the Jiu-​Jitsu area which Bill the owner was introduced and welcomed me to the gym. The tour wrapped by going to the front desk Ali gave me a schedule and asked if I had any questions.
What seemed so scary and intimating before now made me excited and anxious, I just wanted start now. The next day I got my $ 10 introduction class fee and got some handwraps and dove into my first class. The following week I signed up for the full membership. My experience at Alive MMA from the very beginning up to now has been very welcoming and encouraging, I can see why so many people consider this place as a home /​family and I am honored and glad that I am too now a part of the Alive MMA Family.

My name is Kelly!!! I have been working out at Alive MMA since about October/​September. In that time I have lost about 70lbs in their crossfit program. They have a long list of classes and high quality instructors/​coaches/​trainers available. They’re open much later than most other clubs and they’re only closed on Christmas and Thanksgiving. I guess they need some family time but the other 363 days of the year they’re helping the public get in shape and learn self defense. Some classes that you don’t find at other clubs like yoga, injury prevention and rehab, kettlebell and rings training, Olympic weight training are available at Alive MMA. If you would rather not jump right into the martial arts classes you can start out with technique classes where you can learn how to punch and kick properly and do the cardio that conditions your body to do that kind of work before you begin sparring. Kids program looks like a lot of fun and in addition to your childs martial arts training they have life tactics and yoga also. Gi, no gi, boxing, kick boxing, judo/​sambo (wow), wrestling, and even stick fighting (by appt.). Bill and Christine are awesome owners and teachers and there hasn’t been many times that I have been there and one or both of them havn’t been there as well to help with anything you need. Large facilty, great equipment, sauna, showers and a masseuse available. I could go on and on. Varying levels of experience in the membership with everyone being helpful, respectful, and patient. A real nice family vibe. I love it there and I’m very happy with my choice. Unless I move somewhere else this is where I will continue to train. Thank you Alive MMA!!!

My family and I are so lucky to have this gym in our neighborhood. It has something for all of us! My husband does BJJ and Crossfit. My 3 daughters take the kids BJJ and boxing classes. I signed up for Crossfit, then got curious about boxing and BJJ — now I enjoy all of it :)
As a beginner female, I couldn’t have asked for a better introduction to grappling. The coaches are all experts at their sports and they support your personal training goals, whatever they may be.
It is the most cost-​effective way our family of 5 can workout and take high-​level classes. Being a part of a great community of friends is the bonus!

If you are looking for an encouraging and motivating group of individuals to help get you in shape… then STOP looking. Alive MMA is so much more than an MMA gym. It is a Cross-​Fit gym, a Jujitsu gym, a Boxing gym, it is also a Kickboxing gym, there is a healthy kids program (offered 7 days a week!), there is amazing Yoga classes, and wrestling classes…
There is more to list but I don’t want to overwhelm you. There are so many friendly people who train here and the sense of community so strong that once you start showing up you will find it is hard to stop.

I joined Alive MMA 2 years ago… It’s is an amazing place to train… A packed schedule from morning till night full of Jiujitsu, yoga, kickboxing, boxing, crossfit, injury prevention, MMA and more… No other gym in towns schedule can touch Alive! So many amazing coaches, a friendly safe atmosphere where everyone is welcome! It doesn’t matter if it’s your first day or you’ve trained for years, a woman, a man, young, old, bad ass, or out of shape… YOU BELONG HERE!!! My teammates are supportive and have become like family! The amount of classes they offer for the price is an unbelievable deal! An awesome sauna and massage room! It pretty much has it all… Defiantly my second home:)

This is a great place to train martial arts, no matter what your level or goals are. I am over 40, so I like to roll BJJ with folks I can trust to keep it controlled and injury free. They also have a great fight team with lots of belts to prove it, if you want to push yourself to that level. The schedule is unmatched for open available training times. They have everything from Yoga, Cross-​fit, Thai and American Boxing, wrestling, Brazilian Jujitsu, and more. The schedule is crazy! It is literally all day and into the late night sometimes. I wrote a good note about Alive on my business page awhile back but just realized I had not wrote a formal review. After reading ONE negative review on Unilocal,I had to chime in. The person was complaining about having to pay for his financial commitment. ?? This is a business and rules have to be set or the business will fail. I have seen good trainers fail in business because they were soft when it came to the financial rules, then everyone looses. This is a slippery slope. It may be hard to understand for this person, but this lack of understanding fundamental financial practices, is what most likely lead to his troubles in the first place. In contrast, I was out for Knee surgery for 6 months, they let me come back at the same rate I was paying prior when the rates had went up. So don’t let one bad review keep you from coming in and checking it out. This is a great place to train.

I’ve been training BJJ for 10 years and do Crossfit. I’ve trained at a lot of jits academies, mostly in California. NEVER, until Alive, had a I come across a place that had so much to offer for one single membership fee that is a total value… As a member, I now have access to a super technical black belt coach that roles with you regularly (Bill Bradley), a strong BJJ competition team (Brazilian Top Team) that aren’t meat heads, Crossfit, Boxing, MMA, Yoga, Injury Prevention and Rehab, a sauna (a frickin’ sauna!), showers and other amenities all under one roof. I now have my wife and kids here training BJJ and doing crossfit as well (Bill is an awesome kids coach). Gone are the days of paying for multiple gym memberships to train BJJ and do crossfit!!!

I normally train in South Florida with Brazillian Top Team so when I found out that we had reciprocity with the Alive MMA gym here in Portland I had to check it out. This gym is outright amazing! Bill Bradley is the Black Belt instructor for the BJJ. He is a true student of the art who’s Laissez Faire teaching methods allow for the students to train for the full hour and a half class with instruction and adjustments being made «on the roll.» Bill pays particular attention to each student and helps them develope a unique game that suits their unique strengths.
There is great opportunity here for all belt levels. Participants are all polite, respectful and non-​aggressive. That said, this is an incredible workout and a great place to learn and improve technique.
I believe the drop-​in mat fee is about $ 15.00 but it is waived for current BTT members. There are classes all day so if you have the time and you are in the Portland area, pop in and train your game.

I have trained at ALIVE since it opened, as has my daughter. It offers a diverse set of classes throughout the day to accommodate any schedule which I have not found at any other gym. The coaching staff is incredible and works with each of its members to achieve their personal goals whether that be to compete, to get in shape/​lose weight, or just to enjoy themselves. I love the atmosphere here and the training I have received is second to none.

This place is great. They offer over 10 classes a day, 7 days a week. They have good mats, a good crossfit gym, and a good sauna. The workout partners vary from beginner to bad ass. No one has an ego or is a tough guy in this gym.
This place is straight up legit and wont bullshit you in any way. The people who work there arent professional salesmen and dont pedal snake oil. Real people who train hard and are fiercely loyal to their members.
There are pro fighters in the gym and moms of 3. The class structure, workouts, and coaches can accommodate anyone.

Out of this world!

A great place to get good – FAST. My kids train at Alive MMA and I do too.
Very detailed, specific instruction. Coaches are totally open to questions and want you to get better. No BS either, they tell you like it is.
They also have a comprehensive program, with something for everyone. I try the Cross-​fit (it’s not really for me as I like jits) on occasion to mix it up. I’ve gotten great dietary advise too. Overall, it’s a fantastic place for encouraging, comprehensive health and positive life change. A genuine environment with solid folks.

Buyer Beware!
This is not a place you want to enter a contract with. I only have myself to blame but I went to one class after signing on the bottom line and then had some financial hardships hit me such as my car breaking down and other bills stacking up ect.
The guys did finally cancel my membership only after they grabbed a couple hundred dollars out of my account and now I don’t have a bank to bank with. I informed them of this and pleaded with them to reverse the charges. They did not and stuck to their guns. They made out and I’m the fool.
I have trained at places all over the US and have never seen people act this way to someone who hit hard times.
They don’t care if you loose your job. A contract is a contract so beware. Also I know that there are gyms in this area that handle these unforseen situations much better so check arround. There are places that will work with you if the economy kicks your butt.
