Portland has a lot of used furniture stores that sell this kind of furniture. In order to stand out you need to have great customer service and unique items. Asylum has NO customer service and somewhat unique items. I’m currently on the hunt for a couch and both times I’ve been in I wasn’t greeted, asked if I’m finding everything alright, etc. They have lovely chairs and knick knacks but you could find similar items at Red Snapper or Vintage Pink. Or The Good Mod(a bit more expensive). It’s uncomfortable. I do not plan on going back. Maybe if you’re older and /look/like you’re serious about dropping money you’ll have better luck. I don’t think this is much of an excuse, considering I’ve been to The Good Mod and was treated like I may actually buy something. Go somewhere else. There’s much better.

I love this place! They have a unique selection of reasonably priced vintage furniture, art, lamps, etc., and some funky new stuff, too. And I don’t understand the complaints about the unfriendly or indifferent staff. They’ve always been very welcoming and helpful when I’ve visited. It’s the kind of store that makes Portland an interesting, cool place to live and we’re lucky to have it!

I walked into the store and smiled and said hello to the woman behind the counter. The woman, who I believe was going for the mean, gray haired hipster librarian look? just looked as though she had just sucked on a lemon. This pretty much made me decide at that very moment that even if there was something in the store I was in love with, I was not going to give my money to this snob. Besides that, they didn’t have anything that was special in any way. There are other stores with similar products who actually treat their customers like human beings.

I went in here twice, interested in buying a sofa. Both times, the woman working basically talked me out of it. It was almost as if she preferred not to have to do the paperwork! «you know, that will take over 6 weeks to get here», or «you know the price range of that item is x» or «I don’t know what the difference in fabric grades are» or «you know that delivery is not included». Very very odd. I called the manufacturer, found another vendor of the couch and went there and bought it! Geez!

A very Hawthorne store that sells all kinds of trinkets and vintage furniture. It used to be called Sorel’s but apparently people had trouble remember that name, so they changed it. Nothing but the name is different though.

Good prices on very nice mid-century modern furniture. This isn’t somewhere you find that amazing piece for a bargain-basement price, rather they have some well-chosen, beautifully designed furniture at a reasonable price. They take the leg work out of finding that vintage piece to compliment your home. Liked it so much that I brought friends.

Fairly typical antique store, focusing mostly on 50’s retro-futuristic lamps, with other vintage furniture thrown in. Front of the place has small kinck-knacks. If you like this style, this is a great place to go(prices are reasonable). If not, there won’t be much for you.
