Bleuet

Yes, it is a wee bit on the pricy side and it took me a bit to get used to the tartness that other Unilocalers have written about but all in all I and our soon to be three year old enjoyed it.
I have a horrible sweet tooth and have been eating too many bon bons and dessert that I really have been trying to cut back on all the extra sugar in my diet. It’s nice that finally there is a place that I can go and enjoy something sweet after dinner without feeling too guilty.
I do hope they stay open, it was quiet as well when we visited it but they seem to have developed their regular clientele that visits often.

Recommended by friends, I splurged on a honey yogurt combo with apple chutney, rum raisins and gingersnap granola. It may be a bit pricey, but for a once-​in-​a-​while treat, those toppings thrilled my taste buds!

I second the note about runny and icy yogurt. Any shop on NW 23^rd chooses to be expensive just by location selection alone. You can source organic milk fairly inexpensively from a dairy. But let’s assume you’re paying grocery store prices. A 5 dollar gallon of organic milk should get you a gallon of yogurt, right? Culture cost is negligible, and let’s hope you’re not actually paying grocery store prices.
So, 16 cups in a gallon. Assume you sell 1 cup for 3 dollars. That’s 48 bucks you’re pulling in off of a $ 5 investment. That means your food cost is a mean 11% or so. A restaurant owner’s fantasy is 20.
In conclusion, this place is overpriced.

I just read a lot of negative reviews about this place, a lot of people complain about the price too, well i have news for you: Organic dairy products are expensive in grocery market too, so it is not the shop that choses to be «expensive».
This is actual yogurt, not some creamy canola oil sweetened with Nutrasweet. Yes it is not very sweet nor super creamy like the fake stuff. Although could have been organic and still creamy, but i assume most of their clientel does not want to consume full fat yogurt, though not I.

Here is the deal.
Huge, HUGE let down. The place looks and smells like a winner but it’s not.
The only good thing about the yogurt is that it was cold.
Price:
Over priced if you want a topping. I bought a small for $ 2.95 (reasonable) then added raspberries. They gave me 10 (I counted) and it cost and extra $ 1.10. Are you serious? A dollar for 10 raspberries?
Taste:
A combination of rotten milk and ice crystals.
This place just doesn’t cut it. I never actually had frozen yogurt that I wanted to throw away. Everyone is better off going up the street to the other ice cream shops.
You’ve just been Unilocaled in.

You guys have no idea how lucky you are to have Bleuet within eating distance. Let’s just say that high quality organic frozen yogurt has yet to cross the pond in any sort of delicious way.

I had the honey frozen yogurt with fig as a topping. The honey was subtle, but there and how many places do you know that offers fig as a fruit topping?! I love figs! Even still, my stay here was not so enjoyable because the entire place was empty on a weekend night and nothing kills the mood like the a quiet cashier/​server.

I have to agree, way too pricey and very icey! I went here on a hot day, really excited to have some delicious frozen yogurt. Ok, let me back up here for a second. I LOVE yogurt. As in, a day is not complete without yogurt (not neccesarily frozen, but…)
Ok, so hot day, I want something cold. I had walked by this place several times, and thought I really ought to check it out. I ended up getting their medium «deal», which was something around $ 6 for a medium yogurt and 3 toppings.
It was probably a cup of frozen yogurt, with ¼ cup of 3 fruits on top. It was so icey my teeth hurt when I ate it. I also don’t understand the non-​fat thing. Why are people so afraid of fat? Fat generally=flavor. Why not low fat at least?
Anyway, I don’t think I would go back. For what it is it’s way too pricey. I appreciate that it’s organic, and they compost their containers, but it’s just not enough for me.

Out of all the frozen yogurt places, Bleuet ranked second lowest on our quest for frozen yogurt in Portland. Pop Culture Frozen Yogurt was the only to rank lower than Bleuet. Bleuet’s frozen yogurt was icy and their sizes were pricey.

See those three little dollar signs at the top of the page? Yeah, those are there for a reason.
Look, I like my yogurt plain and tart with a healthy drizzle of honey on the top. Maybe add some fruit or granola to bulk it up. And at Bleuet this is what you get, except slightly frozen. But I’m talking breakfast. Maybe you’ll look down upon me when I say this, but when I think fro-​yo, I think desert. I think alternative to ice cream or gelato. I expect a little side of guilt with my frozen desert consumption. This just tasted like my breakfast, which costs me much, much less and I like to think is healthy and nutritious.
All the Yeeps seem to like it, which is cool by me – I’m all about keeping it local and real. And you know, the thing is, my breakfast is reeeeeally good. But it costs like $ 7 for the whole week, not for one sitting.

After my move from Cali, I thought I might have to go to rehab for Pinkberry withdrawals. I just figured I wouldn’t be able to get my tart on here.
I’m not exactly sure how this place stays in business because we went there on a hot hot Sunday and it was empty, but I sure hope people keep it alive.
When we went they had plain, cinnamon, and lime mint. The lime mint was really refreshing, but it didn’t work with the toppings I wanted. Oh I treat my flavor combo seriously. I got cinnamon with maple granola, raspberries, and fig. I don’t know about the thawed fruit one review talked about, but I only saw fresh fruit (can’t really freeze fresh fig… if you could, I would buy a restaurant sized freezer).
The kid (he was sooo young) filled my cup to the brim. If I had a normal sized stomach, that would’ve been a meal.

My favorite is the cinnamon. Very good. A little
sweeter than plain. The size of the cups are VERY DECEPTIVE. They don’t fill any above a third full, so go with a larger size than you think you would like. I love the flavor, but would like to see the product in size appropriate containers. I love that tart delicious light flavor of this yogurt. It’s not an ice cream substitute since it’s nonfat, and it has a real yogurt tang.

SPOILER:
Bleuet’s organic frozen yogurt actually tastes like yogurt. And that may not always be a good thing, as some may find the taste of yogurt off-​putting.
If you’re looking for more of a dessert treat, I would go to Red Mango. It’s sweet and creamy.
But if you’re looking for good-​to-​honest yogurt that is frozen, and can also be a meal, this is the place.
The texture and composition is icy and light, whereas Red Mango, Skinnidip and Tart are thicker like soft serve. I personally find the thicker, sweeter, creamy frozen yogurt harder to eat. Bleuet is also organic and pretty much unsweetened. So you want to add fruit and granola to bring out more flavor if you’re ordering the plain.

I’m a relative new comer to the phenomenon that is Fro-​Yo. Having said that, I am totally obsessed with it after having Yo Cup (in San Francisco) for the first time.
So, on my first trip to Portland I of course scour Unilocal to find Fro-​Yo worth trying.
I found Bleuet and decided to try it out. We got there at closing and the two people, who turned out to be owners, seemed overwhelmed by the two customers in front of me.
Right away I was scared.
When the male owner finally turned his attention to me and offered me samples I gladly accepted.
What happened next was awkward.
This Fro Yo was no bueno, but the owner handed it to me so I couldn’t say, «OK, thanks» and turn around. (I don’t know why I have a need to please, but I do and it comes out at strange times.)
All of the flavors tasted the same. Well I should also say that by tasting the same I mean to say tasted tasted like frozen crap. This was supposed to be Fro-​Yo. Where was the delicate tart goodness that dances on my tongue and makes me happy? Why was it icy and not creamy?
So, I ordered the best of the worst-​lime mint.
Seriously, the best of the bunch was not very good and threw it out 5 minutes out the door. Blah!
To add insult to injury, on the walk back to the hotel, I saw Skinnidip just as they were flipping the sign to closed. If only I had known, I would have rushed over to give it a try.

I hate to be the bad review in the bunch, or the odd ball… but I actually prefer Skinnidip (
) to Bleuet. First of all, I think the idea of a fro-​yo boutique is playing way too hard on known trends. Secondly, when I stopped by (purely due to the raving reviews by other Unilocalers), the owner couldn’t stop talking about Pinkberry (
), as if she is threatened. If she wants to be nervous, she should start checking out her local competition.
Let’s compare, shall we?

Bluet has: frozen fruit (not even thawed for the dish), good hemp granola, interesting yogurt flavors (cinnamon, honey & original), great location (23^rd) with difficult parking, poor lay out of toppings, pre-​made fro-​yo ideas
Skinnidip has: fresh fruit, mochi (yum yum), cereal, brownies, just a lot more good looking toppings, more common flavors (mango, chocolate and original), better tasting fro-​yo (if you like tart), easy parking, nutritional info
I choose Skinnidip.

We’re a huge fan of kefir and delicous yogurt combos in our house, plus it’s 3 blocks from the house. Perfect. A little expensive, but when you look at the ingredients, you know it’s worth every bite.

Do I love to go to Bleuet for lunch because it’s A) Not greasy B) Not fatty C) NOT a salad.
Would I make the walk all the way down 23^rd JUST for Bleuet? No probably not — generally I don’t get the munchies for yogurt. Also Skinnidip is closer to me if I did get said craving for yogurt.

When I first saw bleuet, I scoffed at the whole «boutique yogurt» title because to me boutique = expensive/​way overpriced and the words ‘yogurt’ and ’boutique’ together in one title was a ghastly oxymoron…
… then as the foodie sucker I am, decided to give it a shot. I gotta say, the whole concept was pretty cool (yes. pun intended). You basically get to build your own frozen yogurt parfait and you don’t feel bad about the huge serving because the stuff isn’t really sweet + the whole nonfat thing. The hubby and I split a medium vanilla/​cinnamon with ginger granola and apple compote (YUUUUUMMMMM) and had a hard time finishing it because it was super huge.
I docked a *star because true to its ’boutique’ title, the stuff is pretty damn expensive. For said dish, it set us back about $ 6… really? for yogurt? yes its good, but come on…

I think it’s safe to say that most people think of frozen yogurt (i.e., froyo, or, frozen yo) as the way for dieters to eat ice cream: It looks like ice cream, it tastes like ice cream, and hell, it has all the chocolatey junk that ice cream has.
Bleuet has redefined froyo to me. It looks like soft serve, but it sure doesn’t taste like ice cream! What a delightful surprise for your frozen yo to *gasp* taste like frozen YO (i.e., yogurt). It’s tangy, it makes your mouth water, and it’s not super sweet. Oh, and did I mention that it’s all NONFAT and ORGANIC? Good-​bye soft serve! Helllloooo, Bleuet!
A medium is huge enough to share with a friend or your SO, and they have tons of nummy topping options. They even have pre-​constructed combinations to help your imagination grow (ala Coldstone). And I’ll say from experience that the Caramel Apple is nothing short of divine. Think cinnamon-​vanilla froyo, FRESH apple compote (with chunks of apple with the skin!), extra crunchy candied pecans or cashews, and warm caramel sauce. So good… and I could barely finish it!
The only thing is… the divinity won’t last long… between your devouring it and its melting, it’ll be gone in a snap.

Growing up in Mississippi turns you weird sometimes. I remember the generative moment, a homunculus in the heap of daily ordinary moments. I am 4. It’s the 1970’s. I have pigtails, an aqua tube top with matching terry cloth pants, and yellow jelly shoes that squeak with sweat as I drag Mother into the strange new shop next to Sunflower Grocery.
I had spied an ice cream machine.
Mother had spied incense. For sale, in the open, where anyone could see it. We all know incense leads to drugs and fornication, especially the Strawberry Vanilla Spice with the black girl on the label. Too late, I already had my chubby little hands around a dish of ice cream, which the owner patiently explained was healthy frozen yogurt, very beneficial. I didn’t care, it had a frog on it, and I liked frogs, and wow he spooned honey on top and I wasn’t allowed to have honey because it comes out of bee’s butts. And when I tasted it…
Like nothing I had ever had, ever. It tingled like when I would hide under the bed and stick a 9-​volt battery on my tongue. This was different. This was unsafe. This was wonderful. I’m sure there must have been real stars in my eyes. The owner beamed, «It’s made from goat milk!»
I won’t describe the scene Mother made as she got me the hell out of such a place. In many ways I’ve spent my whole life trying to get back into such a place. I never had frozen yogurt like that again.
Until… Bleuet.
I tasted it again, I found it again, I am 4 again and the world is full of dangerous unknowns, wonderful adventurous dangerous unknowns.
