Center for Student Health & Counseling

I have three separate reviews for this place, as I have experienced three separate services:
–Counseling: 5 stars. Holy crap, if you have insurance through PSU, use the friggin’ counseling! Therapy in the outside world is sooo expensive, and to get it practically for free here is a godsend. Especially when you have an excellent therapist. The Counseling center will do an initial interview and then will pair you up with someone who will work with you personality-​wise.
–Medical– 2 – 3 stars. I mostly came here when I was a) really sick I was missing too many classes, or b) having mega allergy issues. The low stars comes from the doc I saw when I was having allergy issues. Not only did he tell me to take Claritin (it’s like a sugar pill to my allergies), but I kept getting the feeling he was staring at my chest. I saw this doc twice and still got that icky feeling. I ended up going to an outside Ear, Nose and Throat doctor in PDX.
–Dentist– 0 – 1 star. Granted, I do/​did have a dental phobia, PSU Dental did NOTHING to alleviate this phobia, and they very well could have worsened it if I wasn’t so pissed off at them. Not having dental insurance, it naturally makes one not want to go to the dentist, even for cleanings, because out of pocket dentistry is waaay more painful than insured dentistry.
I ended up with an abscessed tooth, and the PSU Dentist couldn’t get me in until TWO WEEKS. I understand they are booked, but I was in so much pain I was seeing stars. They gave me nothing for the pain.
The day before my appointment, they called me to remind me of my appointment. Thank goodness I know my tooth numbers because when they mentioned which tooth they were going to work on, I nearly hit the roof. It wasn’t even the right tooth. Grimacing, I mentioned this to the person over the phone, who then tells me that they will have to reschedule, as their specialist who is able to actually work on my throbbing tooth won’t be in that day. I begrudgingly reschedule for two weeks later, only because I am thinking it’s the only way.
A week later they call and remind me of my appointment the next day. I was livid, as I had made plans to go out of town, and they rescheduled my appointment wrong. I ended up canceling the appointment, and going to a endodontic specialist… and paying out of pocket.
I guess it’s not really a review of the dental hygenists and the dentists (unless you count they were going to work on the wrong tooth), but mostly the office staff. The last thing I wanted was someone that incompetent working in my mouth.

One of the perks of being a student at PSU is cheap access to medical services. No room for students to sit in classrooms, but that’s OK… so long as they are healthy.
The Dental Clinic here is the BEST! Dentists, hygienists, and hygienist assistances are always nice and welcoming (perhaps they are not over worked as the office mostly cater to students and times are strategically scheduled).
The Dentists and Hygienists (always different ones when I come – I think there is a rotation system in place) are highly skilled at what they do. Particularly the Hygienists who give the best cleanings… much better than private places I’ve been. 5 stars if services are free. :P
Bonus: Cute receptionist. Now if only I was into skinny, Vietnamese girls :(
