IT’S EFFINCOAVA! If you have any questions about the coffee… Just. It’s the best. Don’t trust my word for it, google them! They have all sorts of awards and shit. I don’t know. That’s not what this review is about. Everyone should know that coava has amazing roasts, pours and baristas. Which by the way, coava has some of the friendliest baristas of anywhere. Incase you didn’t already know that. This is about the location. Now the other/old location is the hipster level 9000 spot. The spot you take your family that’s visiting from out of town to show them how fucking cool you are that you drink coffee standing up because there are no chairs left. Well don’t worry! Now you have a space to go by your self with you are too tired to be thaaaaat cool. Coava 2.0 is a real coffee shop. They have couches AND a fireplace! It’s warm, cozy and clean. So you can reap all the benefits of drinking some of the best coffee Portland has to offer without having to stand up the whole time. This is coava being reasonable and making a space that is comfortable. finally.

*wistful sigh* While looking for a nice spot to settle in and get some reading/writing and Unilocal skewering done, I read some decent reviews for this place and rolled on over. It’s located in a hulking new mixed use building, taking full advantage of lazy interior design with finished concrete floors and plain white drywall interspersed with your trendier natural wood panels and particle board painted up to look like metal plates and hardware. derp. In short, it’s just like any one of a dozen other local coffee shops or resturants, without the charms of having the deal with an older building/location to make it truly unique. Minus points. Now, for the thing that’s really annoying… Iwas hoping to settle in for a minute and get some stuff done. So I order a house coffee. For $ 3…mmmkay. Yes, it’s fantastic coffee, poured from a thermos, so it was brewed traditionally in bulk. I figure $ 3 is worth it for some coffee, thinking that $ 3 cup includes at least one refill. Call me old fashioned, but when $ 3 will buy a half a bag of the beans they used to brew that thermos, I sort of assumed I’d get more than 8 oz of coffee(they use your standard smaller coffee mugs and leave more than a generous space at the top, so minus 2 oz). Call me crazy, because I felt a bit unhinged when I went up for a refill and was asked for another $ 1.50. I’m not looking for a free bottomless cup of coffee, exactly, but… I mean, come on. Beans aren’t that expensive. So, for a place that does nothing but coffee, I get they need to pay for costs, but $ 3 for a tiny cup of house coffee and no refills… efff that. Really wtf, this coffee isn’t that great. If you hope to find a comfy, cozy place to spend some time and sip on medicore house coffee that isn’t absurdly priced, move along. Not worth your time. People with more cash than common sense, this is a coffee shop for you!

Bottom line: great coffee, good wifi and power, plus they have a fireplace. They are the most expensive coffee shop I’ve been to. They are much like Slate in Seattle or Sweetbloom in Denver. They focus on a simple menu of espresso plus optional quantities of frothed milk. I found out today, though, they do have a mocha option. Haza! I’ve had an espresso, cappuccino and now mocha. I’d rate them 5, 5, and 4 star respectively. I loved the espresso. I’ll buy my next bag of beans here! The cappuccino was also strong. The mocha wasn’t fully mixed, but it had a good cocoa flavor. The seating is stools and a couch. There are low and high stools. Their are plugs in reach of most stool seating. The fireplace is gas and simple, but warm and pleasant on cold days. Overall the place is a little sterile. Too much concrete and hard surfaces, but it is nice.

I love the space here. Wide open, modern, wooden tables and stools. Loved my iced latte. Wish there were more places like this in NYC!

Tucked away under an apartment complex, this cute and comforting coffee shop is the perfect place to sit and talk or get some work done. The staff is extremely friendly and all smiles! Such a cool coffee machine too! I love that there are stool to sit on on mutiple tables to sit and chat. The fireplace in the back corner, invites newspaper readers and workaholics. I ordered a vanilla latte and it is soo yummy! Coava coffee is definitely one to check out! I will definitely be coming back here:)

Another really good local coffee chain in Portland! This Coava is located on the bottom floor of an apartment complex(I think?), it was small and had a modern-chic, minimalistic vibe. They’re famous for their homemade vanilla syrup — .50 cents extra(loved my rich vanilla cappuccino), but they also melt local dark chocolate for their mocha’s(rich but not too sweet) — great options even for the coffee/espresso purist. A bit expensive even for my standards($ 5.50 for a mocha — ouch!), but good. For ice coffee, I personally still prefer Stumptown because their nitro(ice coffee) is AWESOME and I’ve only seen it in Portland!

Bottom of a newer apartment building that’s doing the 1st floor retail space thing. I’ve walked past here dozens of times in the past few months, and finally stopped in today. Modern, yet comfortable décor. White ceilings contrasted by dark(reclaimed?) wood paneling on the wall behind the bar, contrasted by lighter wood surfaces. Bar is concreted and steel, which seems to be the norm these days. Varied seating options, with a small bar in the upper area, and a larger seating area to the left that’s down two steps. High top, community table in the middle of the room, a metal fireplace along one wall, a largish sectional and coffee table in one corner, and bars along the wall. Both the community table and the surface along the north wall work well for standing at. Looks like the lower seating area might be shared with the apartment building(looks like they can close off part of the coffee shop, while leaving access from the apartment side). Wifi and outlets too. Coava’s in my top 3 for coffee in Portland, so my Americano was solid. Overall, a warm space, good coffee, and a positive work environment.

I love this place! It’s a great atmosphere. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is because I didn’t try more of the coffee. I enjoyed my regular coffee, but next time will try the latte. The inside is so chic and modern and a great working atmosphere. The two baristas were very friendly and full of smiles, which makes the experience so much more pleasant. Prices are reasonable also.

Came to Coava Coffee Roasters during a trip to Portland. The place is located walking distance from Blue Star donuts, where we were visiting that morning. The place is very hip and trendy, with a fireplace and a lot of places to sit. I ordered the latte and cappuccino. Both were of great quality drinks — great texture and froth. I would highly recommend Coava Coffee Roasters if you are looking for a coffee spot in Portland.

The cappuccino and coffee were both on point! Very rich and full of flavor. The pasteries were delightful as well. They have an assortment of pastries and kolaches, however if you were looking for more food options, that is all they have. Noticed there were not too many tables given such a large space they had, but plenty as it didn’t seem very busy on a 8:00am weekday. Adored the industrial and rustic vibe(maybe mid century modern). Probably my favorite coffee stop while visiting Portland! Worth the stop in!

4.5 Stars. Coava is such a cool coffee spot. I sometimes feel like this city is flooded with cafes so it’s hard to stand out. But Coava balances itself well as both a trendy spot with that local feel. I’m impressed with the quality of the coffee, and with the expertise of the baristas. To be honest I actually prefer it over Stumptown coffee. No pretentiousness, either. If you tell them what you want they’ll make it for you. If you’re in Southeast I highly recommend stopping by for some Joe.

I was told this was one of the best coffee in Portland. I had to check it out. I came on a Monday late morning around 10:30am where it was quite chill. There was people but it was packed. Lots of options to sit – couch, tall tables and bar seats. There are outlets and there is wi-fi. Staff was super friendly and the atmosphere was nice! I loved the images printed on wood hanged on the walls. As for the coffee? I dig it! It was smooth and it was $ 3 for a small cup. There’s seating outside too.

I found this place while searching for a place to get a bit of work done. I loved the Coava off of MLK, but that one’s atmosphere doesn’t feel quite right for sitting down and working for a bit. This Coava is much more cozy than the wide-open one, with a couch in the corner next to a fireplace. The coffee is the same delicious coffee. While it does feel like a place you can work for an hour or so, the wifi was broken the day we went there, which kind of defeated the purpose of working there. I would call ahead or not depend on it, or just stop here for the coffee!

Perfect cup of coffee! I am rather particular about my coffee and this place makes me happy! My vanilla latte was absolutely the way I wanted it. The raspberry pastry was delicious too. The environment is welcoming. Very contemporary but appealing. Close to my work so I think I will frequent this café.

I know there are probably a lot of Stumptown aficionados but Coava is far superior in my opinion. The espresso is incredibly smooth and full bodied. My friends and I couldn’t stop talking about how good our latte, cappuccino, and americano were. Can’t wait to come back here again(if you’re in Seattle — Storyville would be my recommendation!).

Such a fun and modern coffee shop with the best fireplace couch seating ever! We ended up spending a solid hour over here during our trip to Portland and could have easily spent several more. The coffee itself is very high quality and so darn smooth. My vanilla latte was made to perfection — frothy, creamy and strong without being bitter. The service is even better with such friendly baristas! If you live in the neighborhood, definitely consider making Coava a weekly, if not daily occurrence. Happy Drinking, Unilocalers!

Nice simple menu of about 6 items and a few coffee additives like chocolate and vanilla. They have a few side wall tables with stools, a large central table. And a few couches with coffee table next to a fire place. Atmosphere is nice and clean. Ambient music can be alittle loud but if that doesn’t bother you then it’s a nice place to catch up with a friend or get some work done. I had the cappuccino and it was wonderful, and topped off with a nice heart design in the cream. Always a pleasant touch.

There’s not much you can say about really, really fantastic coffee beyond just that, and that’s what this Coava location focuses on. Don’t come here to work or to eat or to host a book club*. Come here to drink really, really fantastic coffee, to nerd out on the single origins on offer, and to appreciate the craft that goes behind every cup, and you’ll be amply rewarded. *Don’t get me wrong, they do offer delicious pastries from little t baker, and they do have a fireplace, and they do have free wifi, but let’s be honest, you’re coming for the black gold.
