Dr Pike Dentistry For Children

What more needs to be said besides that my newly 2 year old twins actually tried to go back into the exam/​work area of Dr. Pike Dentistry after their appointment was done, both shouting «more please».
The staff is warm, patient, engaging and they all have a soft, gentle touch.
I recommend this office 110%!

If 6 stars was an option, I would gladly give this place 6 stars. Dr. Pike is the dentist that we all wish we had as kids. He is kind, gentle, and kids trust him quickly. He explains things well, and works with you to create a plan that suits your child’s circumstances. We make quite a trek to see him, but it is totally worth it.

Dr Pike and Team are awesome ! Kids are so happy going to the Dentise and this is a pleasant experience for us.

We came here after a bad experience at another children’s dentist. The staff here is amazing, my kids who were once fearful and full of anxiety for even a cleaning, are now able to have all work done tear free and drama free.

These people are toddler-​whisperers. Things that would otherwise be typically unheard-​of or agreed to by my daughter were completed turned around. I was pleasantly shocked. The staff is AMAZING. My two-​year-​old got examined, polished and flossed without a hitch. In fact she never wanted to leave.

If you want a place that will see your child with emergent issues quickly, look elsewhere. When I called because my 4 year old son had chipped two teeth, leaving jagged sharp edges, I was told that there was literally ONE appointment in the next week that they could provide me. It happened to be at the one time I could not make. They told me that while they have a small handful of appointments available for emergent issues, if my child wasn’t actively bleeding and in pain, I’d have to wait over a week for him to be seen.
So, his sharp teeth have to cut him up before they’ll make room for him. That’s so not okay with me. I’d brought him here several times for regular cleans, but will not be returning. It’s a total mill, with 10 – 15 kids being seen at a time. You never get the same dentist doing the exam, and there’s nothing special about the place that you can’t find at other pediatric dentist locations (ones that will actually SEE your child when he has an emergent issue rather than telling you that since he’s not actively in pain and bleeding, you have to wait a week). It’s clear that they pack the appointments so tightly in order to make the most money they can, but by doing so, they don’t leave room for cases where children need to be seen quickly, and it’s THAT that I’d be concerned about. Definitely two thumbs down.

We are huge fans of Dr. Pike! My three daughters have been seeing him since we moved here three years ago. They’re ALWAYS on time and the dental assistants are AMAZING — so nice and friendly. They even have a sweet patient advocate dog that comes in on Tuesdays (I think) for the kids — not to mention the gerbils that are always there. This is truly a kid-​friendly place!
What really did it for me happened on Father’s Day last year. My daughter fell off a pogo stick and landed face first on the pavement — breaking her two top (adult) teeth. I freaked out — as most parents would — and called the emergency number. Dr. Pike HIMSELF took the call while out with his own family. He calmed me down, requested I text him pictures and then told me he’d see her the next day — despite it being their busiest day of the year (1^st day of summer break). He worked on my daughter himself — through his lunch break — restoring her adorable smile. LOVE THAT GUY. Go see him. You won’t be disappointed.

Dr. Steven Pike is great! We are new patients from out of town. We left an email on New Years Eve and he called me back! He spent time on the phone understanding the problem. The office continued the remarkable experience. Quickly did intake info. Dr. Pike spent time with us, especially Isobel who was first introduced to the gerbils, then had everything explained to her, at her level. Then was allowed to watch Dora on a little iPod with headphones during the procedure (which was not easy!). Anyway… many thumbs up!

As the other reviewers have said, the whole staff are great. They all have a great way with kids, which is fantastic. My daughter now goes to Dr. Pike for her orthodontia too, which is convenient – sometimes we can get her braces checked at her regular dental cleaning appointments – love that!
My only complaint is that the place is SMALL. Lots of tables crammed into a small space and it kinda drives me crazy. No walls, no privacy either. I don’t personally mind that but keep it in mind if you’re sensitive to having privacy.
I would LOVE if they moved to a larger office – it’s really kinda ridiculous how small of a space they have considering the number of patients and staff there at any given time.

My son has had some traumatic dental experiences in his young life, which left him afraid of dentists for many years. Some friends recommended Dr. Pike after a horrible experience with World of Smiles, when we needed to have some work done (we are relatively new to the area, so our traumatic experiences were elsewhere).
My son and I are both really happy with our experience there. They are mercury-​free and try to use as safe of materials as are possible in dentistry. The staff there, which DOES include the actual dentists, work really hard to try and connect with the kids and make them feel as safe as possible. They let him know that HE is the boss and that they will only do what he is comfortable with. They are willing to do what it takes to make them feel comfortable. They have little hamsters (I think they were hamsters) that the kids can feed and look at, which made my son really happy. And there are video games and toys to play with.
It’s a bit busy, so for sensory kids it might be a bit tricky, but they really work to connect and make the kids feel at ease, so where I thought it might be an issue for my sensory sensitive son, it ended up being fine. Everything is out in the open so the kids can see each other and the dentists, Parents can stay or the kids can be back there with the group on their own.
I also loved how the dental assistant was very calm and quiet when talking and instead of doing that thing that some adults do with kids and yelling «HI! HOW ARE YOU???» that my son hates, she was so quiet and almost whispering when she talked to him… so calm and sweet and friendly. I know my son perceived her as being a friend because she shared his interests and he wanted me to tell her all sorts of stories about our lives — our chickens, pets I had as a kid, all kinds of things he would only ask me to do with someone he wanted to include in his circle. She was brilliant. (And also a Mom, so she gets it on a whole different level, you know?)
What I really really appreciate is that Dr. Pike has been willing to hear all of my concerns about materials and safety issues and has been willing to discuss with me all of the possible options. I do a lot of research on my own, and each material I have asked him about, he has been knowledgable and willing to say when he doesn’t know something or if he hasn’t worked with a material before. He treats me like an intelligent human being, and talks to me like an equal. He doesn’t seem to have a God complex and trusts my instincts and what m son says about his own teeth, as well. I cannot tell you how validating that is and how much it means as a parent, just to be heard and to be able to have a dialogue. It is everything sometimes.
We even already had an anesthesiologist we’d been working with, again to make sure that they use the safest and easiest for my son to detox medicines for GA, and even though they have a regular anesthesiologist they work with, they were happy to use this one, since we already had been discussing my sons case extensively. That’s pretty darn great to me, that Dr. Pike shows flexibility and willingness to do what works best for my whole family, in addition to being so great with the kids.
I recommend Dr. Pike. It’s so great that my kiddo is having this opportunity to have positive dental experiences after having traumatic ones. Hopefully this will heal his trauma and offer him the knowing that dentists CAN be okay and safe and help when you need it. Sometimes diet and supplementation and no sugar isn’t enough, and you have to bring in the dentist. It’s nice to know that when they are needed, there really are good ones out there, who really do care about our children.

Fantastic dental practice. My daughter, 7, cant wait to go visit the dentist and their staff is wonderful with kids. I would highly recommend this place. The two Drs. Pike and some of the other pediatric dentists in the Practice are all great.

For the past several years, we have been struggling to find a dentist that can work with our 9 year old daughter’s severe gag reflex. The whole journey has resulted in a fear of the dentist. We have been shuffled to the ‘quiet room,’ scared, and made to believe that GENERAL ANESTHESIA is the only way to have our daughter have a cavity filled. Thank goodness we listened to our gut and kept searching for someone who would be gentle and patient with her. We found our perfect fit with Dr. Pike and his staff at Dentistry for Children. The entire staff is very warm and approachable. The hygentist spent about an hour at our first visit getting our daughter acclimated with the office, the equipment, and their hamsters while Dr. Stephen Pike talked to me about their practice. This first visit was just to get aquainted — no real work was done. Plus, the dentist we had been going to took over 10 days to get her dental records to Dr. Pike’s office. Well past the time of our appointment. Dr. Pike took the x-​rays he needed for FREE. Dr. Allen Pike, wrote a book called, Creating a No-​Fear Practice, that discusses successful techniques in overcoming a child’s fear of the dentist. She now loves going to the dentist. I highly recommend visiting Dr. Pike whether your child is fearful or not.

Dr. Pike is a gem. He really took his time to comfort my toddler before checking his teeth. The dings are for scheduling — I guess because of these ratings, the practice has gotten way too popular. AND they’re not open on Fridays. Great if you have a flexible work schedule or are able to be a stay at home parent, but a nightmare for working parents. Not happy being told in March that the next available appointment for a time that works for me is July.

This is, bar none, the most positive experience I’ve ever had at a dental office — and I wasn’t even the patient. My 2-​year-​old son smiled through the whole examination; I’m not exaggerating! Now we are thinking of switching insurance just so we can regularly patronize this office.

This is THE best pediatric dentist in the world I think! Dr. Pike is so gental and loving and so is ALL the staff. This is a NO FEAR dental practice, which is so important so your child starts off with the right foot about dental care and going to get check ups for life. The place is an open floor plan and they do not shut doors (they actually dont have any I think) and parents are allowed in with their child to oversee procedures. My child came from a traumatic experience to Dr. Pike at age 4 and has made a full recovery thanks to Dr. Pike and the dental family there. I can not thank them enough for what they have done for my son.
You will be over the moon you found this gem in Portland!

best dentist ever! i wish the Pike docs (father and son team) also saw adults. they are so friendly and nice and do everything they can to make going to the dentist a fun and stress free experience.
after visiting these dentists just one time, my 3 yo started wanting to play dentist and asking me to clean her teeth. they let the kids touch all the instruments and play with them. they also have pets in the office, games to play and prizes for kids to pick out as well as getting a new tooth brush and paste. oh, and those new nifty xylitol wipes!
when my daughter turned 4 she chipped a tooth and had to get it filled. she was completely cooperative and they didn’t even have to use the laughing gas that they sometimes use to help kids relax. it was over in just a few minutes– very fast and painless!
i recommend these guys to everyone who asks where to take their child for a dental checkup. they are awesome!

This is a dental practice that is really child centered. I was very nervous about choosing a dentist for my child, as I myself had negative experiences as a kid. Dr. Pike was recommended by a friend, and I am so glad! The whole philosophy is to make the children comfortable, and provide an experience that is going to be positive. Every staff member who we’ve interacted with has been patient and kind while being efficient. Even with many patients there, they don’t seem rushed.
They are also good at providing clear explanations and information to parents.
My child is a bit reserved with new people, but the calm and positive attitude here makes it no problem to get his exam done. He was actually looking forward to his last visit (what can I say, he likes the gerbils).

Looking for a dentist for your kid? This is it. I too was given multiple referrals to Dr. Pike. There’s 2 generations of Dr. Pikes working here and they are both fantastic. My son adores going to the dentist. This place is made for kids. There is no detail left unattended to. Your kid will love going to the dentist. You will be impressed, I guarantee it!

i’m so surprised there aren’t any reviews of Dr. Allan Pike. I recently took my son to him on the recommendation of so many people I’ve forgotten who they are.
Dr. Pike’s approach is wonderful — he comes from a place of making children feel at ease – so if this is your child’s first dentist, this may be the start of a life without dental fear. there are gerbils, video games and toys in the office.
i was most impressed at our initial visit — Dr. Pike got down on the floor with my son and I to examine his mouth (he’s 18 months old) just so my son wouldn’t think anything of it.
He also promotes the use of products without flouride (he *may* use fluoride, i do not know, but he started us off with xylitol instead — more holistic and less toxic).
all in all, if you are seeking a pediatric dentist, look no further.
