I would give it more like 4.5 stars. My only qualm was that the Mac and cheese lacked flavor. It really did. The smoky eggplant and Gouda sandwich made up for it though! The biscuit is huge, salty, buttery, crumbly and everything you would hope for in a biscuit. The eggplant is soft and the sprouts and red onion crisp and fresh. It’s really well balanced and an awesome option for vegetarians in the city!

Delicious fried pork sandwich! Really enjoyed it. Nicely breaded and on a big biscuit with molasses. Highly recommend, though it is tough to find as it is just off Congress Street behind Yordprom Coffee. In fact, I got a bit of attitude from the woman running Figgy ‘cuz I parked in their small lot behind and ran into Yordprom by mistake(my guess is this happens a lot). Regardless, great addition to Portland food!

Yup — as good as it gets! I’m finally back in town and this was one of my first stops. I did not get to sample the goods when Figgy’s opened last summer. I called ahead to order ½ Chicken, Mashed Potatoes and Green Beans(sadly the gravy did not make it to my to go order — that’s okay, gives me a chance to sample the gravy on my return visit. I picked up the ‘to go’ late afternoon — with intent to reheat. It was hard not to break into the box but I waitied! The fried chicken was perfect — Crispy, juicy and done to perfection. Not greasy at all — just the way fried chicken should be. Mashed potatoes — again perfect! Creamy, smooth and flavorful. and the green beans — flat beans — I don’t know what the seasoning was, other than LOVE — the beans where crisps and flavorful. I re-heated everything in cast iron skillet(s) @ 350 for about 15 min… This will be my go to spot when craving comfort food!!!

Forget about Trump. Forget about Hillary. The only thing electable to me right now is this D-ELECTABLE fried chicken brought to us by the folks at Figgy’s. In fact, there is sitting before me now is my second swing at their half-bird, consisting of skillet fried chicken breast, thigh, and drumstick. It was so good the first time that I had to try it again to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. Quick, someone pinch me! I highly recommend that you try their fried chicken with their creamy mac and cheese. In my opinion, the creaminess balances out the seasoned and salty, crispy skin that just begs to be peeled off the bone. It is finger lickin’ good!

Been meaning to try this place for a while, and on a reroute due to construction, I was stuck by it yesterday so figured it was the time. The place is takeout, or you can sit on the benches provided. There is also a few parking spots adjacent to the place for parking but I’m betting those fill up during the summer. I ordered dinner for 3; a whole bird(which is cut up, 2 each of thigh, drumstick, breast), mashed potatoes with gravy and the ay ay ron for today. It took a little bit of time for the whole bird, but the day was nice so it was not a bad wait. The chicken was fantastic. Even though we had to reheat, it was tender and moist and not at all greasy, a big turn off for me. They use real Maine potatoes and they were rich and creamy and the gravy was real flour gravy. Fantastic. The ay ay ron is a breaded filet of chicken with potato and slaw, and though I’ve not tried it yet, if the rest is any indication, I’m in for a great lunch.

Figgy’s is a hidden gem of the West End. Each time I’ve gotten food here, I’ve been greeted with exceptionally friendly associates who seem genuinely happy to explain menu items. Their portions are generous, and there’s a great variety of options for both meat eaters and vegetarians. The mashed potatoes are dynamite, as is the Mac n cheese, and the biscuits are to die for. For locals, this place is hard to not be a regular of.

You know when you’re a little hungover and you’re both overwhelmingly nauseous and irrationally starving at the same time? So, that may have been me my first time at Figgy’s. After a wee bit too much to drink the night before, I woke up realizing only one thing in the entire world was going to make me feel better: biscuits. So, I made it a point to specifically come to Figgy’s. I hadn’t before because… I don’t know, I’m not really a lunch person. And parking in this area of Portland can be trying. But the stars aligned, and at noon: thirty on a Thursday I made my way over, only to discover that they actually have three or four spots reserved next to the establishment designated for their customers. I parked, I walked up to the window and was greeted by a really friendly woman(the owner), I ordered The Smokey($ 8): a biscuit sandwich comprised of smoked gouda, roasted eggplant, sprouts, red onions, and paprika mayo. When my sandwich was ready she asked if I needed a pile of napkins or some utensils to help with lunch. I thought this was oddly stated, but I’ll get back to why it’s not in a second. I went home and discovered an ENORMOUS biscuit(like a good six inch diameter beast of a biscuit) with a thick slab of smoked gouda, a thicker slab of eggplant, sprouts, chunks of(too many for my personal liking) red onions, and a creamy, spicy mayo. I wasn’t expecting such an abundance of the fillings! Also, the flavors complimented each other spectacularly. I devoured that sandwich, had no regrets, and no longer felt hungover. Win. Win. Win. However… as you’ll see, I don’t have a photo of The Smokey(which for some reason I keep wanting to call The Great Smokey). Why? Well, minus the fact that I basically inhaled it, it looked like a horror scene after I was done eating(both myself and the area in which I had eaten it), because seriously their biscuit sandwiches — while one of the best lunches I’ve ever had — were also one of the messiest sandwiches I’ve ever had. But when you’ve got a mega biscuit filled to overflowing with ingredients, OFCOURSEIT’S GONNABEMESSY. And clearly the the owner knew this. She did, after all, ask me if I wanted a «pile of napkins and utensils to help». Figgy’s food is not for the faint of heart or calorie counters. Their food is hearty, stick to your ribs, comfort fare that will leave you full for days. Perfect for cold days, perfect for fuel before a long event, perfect when you’re — gee, I don’t know — hungover. I’m definitely gonna come back and try their sides, specifically the«Really Creamy Mac n’ Cheesy», «Sesame Cole Slaw», and«Buttermilk Mashed Maine Potatoes» which are all vegetarian friendly.

Great fried chicken I felt home in Alabama again. The tables where fun to sit at and meet other diners. I have one little issue and it is just me but I want the wings with my whole and half bird. I will return over and over.

Figgy’s is a quaint, funky, fried chicken based neighborhood take out spot. Parking is provided for your pick up, but it holds two or three cars. The chicken is local humane harvested. The base of cooking is small batch, black skillet fried, with good light oil, and with a skilled chef care and skill. I tried the whole chicken, garlic mashed, gravy, and sautéed cabbage for two. It was delicious, possibly the best lightly golden and fried chicken I’ve eaten. The perfectly gold sheen on the chicken is a masterpiece. The sides were also good, with deep flavorful brown gravy complimenting the perfectly mashed spuds. This is real deal fried chicken… close to the best I’ve had. It doesn’t come cheap, as the meal for two above was $ 45…take out… but that said, it was worth it… and I’ll be back again soon… Great food…5 stars

Our 1st introduction to Figgys was her fried chicken sandwich loaded with mashed potatoes, gravy and coleslaw on a av house biscuit. She had us from the first carb bite. And, seriously, I can’t wax poetic about it. it was 2# of comfort food and it was insanely good. On return trips we’ve had the mac n cheese, corn salad, roasted beets, banana wafer pudding and her signature fried chicken. Her chicken is definitely the star – moist and crispy and the half bird is a must order. The one thing I would suggest is a light brush of butter on the biscuits that come with the chicken.. But, they’re complimentary so I really can’t complain.

I dragged my husband here for an impromptu dinner. We didn’t realize there was(limited) parking adjacent to figgys. Small menu, but fortunately we like fried chicken! There are Two picnic tables, one was free so we ordered our food to eat there, and turned around and our table was swooped up by a gaggle of kids and their very large, barking dog… We quickly changed our order to go and were on our way with a bag of dinner to go. We could not wait to get home! The food was amazing. We ordered the whole bird, mashed potatoes and mac n cheese. The bird comes with 2 small biscuits. We wished we had ordered more quantities of the mac n cheese. It was so good. The chicken was perfectly cooked and crisp. We are definently going to be getting takeout again from figgy’s. Call your order in!

I just ate The Smokey. Smoked gouda, roasted eggplant, sprouts, red onions, and paprika mayo. Hands down best vegetarian sandwich in Portland. It’s really all I would like to eat every day for the rest of my life. Their pickled veggies are so fresh and their mac and cheese is unbelievably creamy. I’m grateful this place is right down the road from me!

I decided on a whim to check out Figgy’s on a Friday evening in August. This small BBQ/friend chicken hut is attached to the back of Yordprom Coffee and has an order take-out window similar to that of an ice cream stand. But instead of getting soft serve, you’re getting some of the most amazing chicken to ever fit inside your mouth. According to their website, all of the chicken used is raised antibiotic and cage free. A few picnic tables are set up outside, if you just can’t wait to get home to tear open the container and eat. I know I couldn’t, but that has more to do with my self control around fried chicken products than anything. Their menu is delightfully small, which helps to narrow down the decision making process. They have three or four sandwiches, and a few messy selections like wings and skillet fried chicken which are probably best eaten in the privacy of your own home with plenty of napkins and utensils within reach. They also serve home-made ice cream sandwiches and banana pudding — two things I plan to hit up on my next visit. After perusing the menu for a few minutes, I ordered the ‘Ay Ay Ron’ — a chicken sandwich with slaw, mashed potatoes, and gravy inside a giganto-biscuit, which I secretly hoped was paying homage to the 1992 ‘Captain Ron’ movie with Kurt Russell. I was a bit turned off by the $ 9.50 price — until I actually saw what $ 9.50 gets you. It’s essentially a paddle-board sized sandwich, folks. So big. I didn’t know you could make a biscuit big enough to hold that much chicken cutlet, but Figgy’s has clearly defied the laws of physics. Service was fast and friendly. And when they ask you if you want extra napkins and forks to go along with your sandwich, don’t scoff at them with sandwich-eating overconfidence and walk away as I did. You will need every utensil and napkin you get to make your way through this chicken masterpiece… and it will reflect poorly upon you when(not if) you crawl back up to the order window asking for more napkins when you’re covered with gravy and mashed potatoes. Pro-tip: DONOT operate heavy machinery for at least two days after eating this sandwich.

If you’re looking for a local secret, try this place out! I wasn’t really expecting much, since I hadn’t heard a lot about Figgy’s before and the menu didn’t look like anything super exceptional either. They had fried chicken and wings but then as I took a closer look at things, their food was very uniquely cooked. Their wings were Korean style fried! BUT they also had BISCUIT sandwiches. Eventually I opted in for the vegetarian«Smokey» sandwich(because it was cheaper). I was a little bit hesitant, but as the food came it was awesome! First thing: It was a LOT bigger than I expected from a biscuit sandwich. Second thing: The biscuit was great! crunchy on top, soft and warm on the inside, and stable on the bottom. The ceiling and floor inside the sandwich was also a good consistence and taste Not too salty or sweet for my taste, but also not bland. Third thing: Every section of the biscuit sandwich seemed to be a nice and different experience. This sandwich had perfectly cooked eggplant base(not too soft(overcooked), not too precooked/hard). On top of this, it contained what I think was provolone cheese, which really complimented the eggplant and biscuit taste. BUTWAIT! Inside the sandwich were also sprouts and a smidgen of Cajun sauce. In short, I had a great experience. They have some seating(like 3 outside tables) but I would recommend getting take out. I came here at about 12:30, sat on one of benches and was pleasantly surprised it wasn’t packed. But maybe after this review, it will be more difficult to find seating. Still worth a try for all you foodies out there!

The chicken in amazing — cast iron friend, crispy skin, so tender and juicy. The wings — bacon dusted and so crispy and delicious! And that Mac and cheese! Mmmm… I can’t wait to go back. A half chicken, half dozen wings and a pint of Mac and cheese was more than enough for the two of us!

Twice thus far I’ve eaten at Figgy’s and twice thus far I’ve been super satisfied! My first visit was with my girlfriend. We shared the chicken sandwich and it left us both filled. It was delicious. Being a nice day, we took advantage of their picnic table seating. Friendly service, window style. The second visit I took to go. I’m actually writing this review with the taste of the pork sandwich still in my mouth. MMMMMMMM, pork. Thin, crispy and generous portion of pork on the same scrumptious biscuit that the chicken sandwich was served on(thank goodness because I might of ordered the chicken sandwich again just to taste that biscuit once more.) It’s a takeout window so don’t expect table service. I’ll be going back again, again and again.

Well, after waiting months, I finally broke my macrobiotic diet to give Figgy’s a try. ITWASSOWORTHIT! Let’s put it this way: I was hoping to eat the leftovers for dinner, but it got eaten five minutes after I got home. Alas, this is the best fried chicken ever — and I ain’t no spring chick when it comes to the delicacies which once resided in my basket. Before this my fave was on the wrong side of the tracks in Albany — yes, there is good fried chicken in Albany — but my point is that you don’t have to go there! Go here! The chicken is super tender and incredibly fresh. Each piece has been given unique attention as to ensure every segment of our fine feathered friend has an equal chance to achieve this highest honor — ’cause we all know every chicken desires nothing less than to be fried amongst its peers. I looked into the back and saw the chicken being prep’d on the racks. For real, these are cooks who really pay attention to details, like dusting with flour everywhere /from every direction, looking at each piece individually when cooking, handling the raw food with respect, keeping perfect sanitation in the back of the house, etc. The cook/owner must really know the restaurant business(beyond the workings of a hip fry shack) and her younger helpers are clearly well trained chicken fryers(and not your regular bunch of uncaring kids working a summer gig). The chicken is perfectly done(not over cooked, which is the unfortunate norm among chicken slingers) and the color of the outside is that perfect modulated tanned hue that appears in your dreams of fried food(admit it, you dream of fried food too). Most amazingly, every bite has perfect crispness — no matter what part of the Aves [fancy Latin word for«bird”] you sink your teeth into. I cook a lot and accomplishing such consistency amongst one piece, let alone multiple plates, is not an easy task — you REALLY need to be mindful and know what you are doing. Rest assured, there ain’t no nasty beer batter or anything like that falling off your bird in an oily slop. This is the REAL thing! Imagine a caravan of family settlers in 1849, rolling across the Great Divide towards the prospects of California gold. They circle the wagons for protection from the unknown; and they light the camp fire to ward off the stirring sound heard in the fields. Then Ma’ steps out the back of a wagon with in her impeccably clean apron and with her magic iron skillet. In the middle of the unchartered prairie, Ma’ always is able to make a home cooked meal which would comfort the grizzliest of Grizzly Adams and help even Jeremiah Johnson find solace in the dangerous toil that lays ahead. Trust me, if you eat that oily and nasty breaded type of «fried chicken», and not this true-American kind, you are not going to make it far in d’em hills panning for gold! Anyways, the chicken tastes bright and as if it was caught just moments ago. I am a dark meat kind of guy, which was powerfully tender. The white meat was just as indescribable — amazing texture that makes your whole body say«ummm-good juiciness!» Usually you get great chicken with ok sides — as at Coast Café in Cambridge, MA(but go eat there too!). Here the biscuit is fluffy, NOT eggy(and tastes really good broken up and tossed in the mac’n’cheese). For the mac, you have the longer curly pasta which holds the sauce better than the cheap elbows. It has a creamy white sauce which makes you forget about all that orange and yellow cheesy stuff. This may technically be an «Alfredo» sauce, but who knows? All I care about is that the creaminess creates a heavenly equilibrium with the fried-ness of the chicken. After going with this combo, you will never want to go back. Yes, I love fried chicken… Yes, I usually only write reviews to vent frustration… Yes, this is a stellar review… Yes, I would write even more praise if I didn’t have stuff to do… Yes, you should go to Figgy’s… No, I didn’t bother to read any other reviews, cause I know my fried chicken and I know my five-stars… Yes, you should eat here…

After a LONG day at work, I decided to try Figgy’s takeout chicken and vegetables for dinner for myself and two of my children. The people working there were very pleasant and helpful. I ordered a whole chicken for $ 24 and a quart of side vegetables for $ 10 figuring that would feed 3 people. Although the menu DOES say that a whole chicken consists of two legs, two breast pieces and two thighs(no wings, they appear to upcycle all wings for another menu item) I was actually astounded at how little food we got for $ 24. The chicken pieces themselves were tiny and although they do mention that their chickens are humanely raised, which I know can hike the price, I was still pretty surprised. The chicken did come with two small biscuits, I paid extra for a third. So…was this enough food for 3? No. Was the chicken really memorable? No. I actually feel badly for Figgy’s as I really like to try to support new local business, but this is an amazing food town, filled with really great(and filling) alternatives to feed 3 on takeout for $ 38(all told). For the same money, you could walk a few steps down the street and stuff 3 people on the ethereal sandwiches and coffee at Tandem. I am not sure if the market will bear this pricing and hope they might rethink the relative value to cost of what they are selling. On a positive note, we did order two desserts. The ice cream-cookie sandwich was amazing and plenty for two people to share and the Nilla wafer/banana pudding was great as well.
