Fred Meyer

This place is neither amazing nor terrible. It is two stories, so sometimes it can be difficult to move through easily, depending upon your shopping needs. It also has a lot of space, but I often find that a particular item I’m shopping for (a brand of toilet paper, a type of bread, non-​scented fabric softener, etc.) is not available on the shelf. Employees are often hard to find, so it’s hard to ask about something. Also, it lacks a true clothing section (underwear, socks, and hosiery are about the limit), and, while improved, its home and electronic section leaves something to be desired.
Those things being said, the has a great selection of produce and the people working check-​out and the customer service desk have always been pleasant.

I have enjoyed coming to this Fred Meyer location for over a decade now, and it has done nothing but get better. I love being able to cone here with some pocket money and get some sushi. The fact that these have bars now is just funtastic. I have always enjoyed the cheese variety. Thank you for having public restrooms. Two stories of anything you could need really. They get festive with holidays and that is always a warm welcome. I enjoy that for the most part in all these years, I have experienced good customer service here. The organics and natural food section is off the chain! Not to mention, the wide variety of gluten free products, uncured meats, and non GMO products. I LOVE the organic produce variety. The fact that the let the community post events is lovely. I only have had one issue ever. I was going down the escalator recently and it snagged my skirt and seriously ripped it, nearly tore it right off of me! I had to rip it out of the escalator teeth to save my skirt. The skirt is badly damaged. It was just a really crazy experience, might want to check it out and see if there is some way to block that. May not be good if someone gets their skirt ripped off In the middle of the store! Much love and light

Great fill-​in for the basics between all the hip, trendy, local, fun shops along Hawthorne. Did someone say they expected clothes here? Walk a block in either direction and support your locals and vintage shops for that stuff. Come here to get a hacksaw last minute and awesome fresh and large selection of groceries. Have some conveyer belt sushi while you’re at it.

Fred Meyer is my preferred grocery store, and this location is a good one. The produce section is nice and large, it seems to be kept very clean, and the produce is fresh and attractive. The aisles are laid out in a way that makes sense to me, and are adequately wide (except for the cosmetics/​pharmacy/​health sections, for some reason. Why do I have to squeeze past the people perusing tampons and hemorrhoid cream? That’s where people need the most space!)
I don’t often venture upstairs, but it is nice to know that they have a good selection of household goods up there for when I’m grocery shopping and suddenly remember that we desperately need new towels (or a gallon of paint, or yarn, or we need keys cut… OK so none of those have ever happened, but the convenience is there!)

Three food poisonings during summer 2015 alone. June-​2015 from a slice of chocolate cake sold in the bakery, bought in a plastic container. July-​2015, from an open pan of scoop-​your-​own garlic hummus in the deli section. And not to let August pass without the third and final night of feverish dizzy vomiting, from a tray of prepared sushi sold on open cooler shelves near the Hawthorne entrance.
In all three cases I could taste the mold and threw out the remainder, but it was too late. I have been shopping here for decades, raised my kids on their food, and have never had this kind of problem. Clearly there is an ongoing violation of refrigeration and food safety rules. Where is the on-​site supervisor and where is the city health inspector?

We love this store, especially their Sushi serving area. Excellent customer service, and great, FRESH food! Every time my father comes from the Midwest to visit, he loves to go shopping with us here – he loves this store as well.

So much stuff, and we found everything we wanted. Plus a little more. Like the feeling of Fred Meyers, easy to shop and seems like they have everything.
Plus the people who work there are helpful and cheerful. Always a good quality for a store!

OH fred meyer. how I wish you were in the south.

I appreciate this store for so many reasons. My only gripe would be that it’s amateur hour in the deli section. I can imagine part of that is because it’s mostly frozen food anyway and their hands are tied.
The donuts for instance. Stop with the VooDoo knockoffs. It’s gross! Nobody wants nasty white chocolate shavings on their chocolate donut. And for crying out loud put something on the cake donuts. And can someone mix up some glaze and pour on the cinnamon rolls???
The hot bar is another one that gets so out of whack. Stop putting lemon in the butter. Lemon does not go on bread, and it also makes the shrimp taste sour and metallic.

I’ve lived in the Mount Tabor area for over forty years, and my family lived nearby when I was growing up too, so the Hawthorne Fred Meyer store has been my «home» grocery store for a long time. Over the decades, I’ve seen it through several different major remodelings all the way to its current configuration.
Of course I love the whole store, but this review is specifically for the hot food buffet in their deli department. For $ 6.99 a pound, I like the variety available, and most of it is pretty tasty too. The «cuisine» changes from day to day. For example, I know that Tuesdays are Mexican day because that’s when I can get the chicken enchiladas.. .the ones made with green chili verde sauce are especially good. Today was Italian day and I got some vegetarian lasagna and one big meatball in marinara sauce. Good tasting stuff. I know the buffet steam table is «hygienic» because I’ve seen employees stick little thermometers into the food to make sure everything is kept at the proper temperature. That’s reassuring. Overall, $ 6.99 a pound is a reasonable price for the variety of food you can choose, the tastiness, and (most of all) the convenience.

I think the set up is funky, and the hipster parents letting their kids stick their nose picking fingers into the fruit and salad bar stuff is nasty. The workers are afraid of not totally fitting in so they don’t tell the brats (referring to the parents) anything. BUT if you don’t mind hipsters, pushovers, hippies and yuppies then the selection of organic produce and other healthy options makes it totally worth it.
There’s bike parking, roof parking, sushi bar that’s great, the bakery does a good job fair kids cakes and its across from concert venues. So you can buy rum for your flask before going into Hawthorne theater.
Bottom line: come here for just about anything but clothes. And remember to behave like you’re on xanax or they’ll sniff you out for not being one of them.

This is the friendliest Fred Meyers I’ve ever been to. There was someone greeting me when I walked in and 4 other employees asked me how I was doing within 5 minutes being in the store.
Oh and great wine selection!

This place has everything. It reminds me of Marks & Spencer in England.
I love the prices and selection and the fact that I can get home and garden products here. Next time I’m here I’ll have to try the deli selection which looks gigantic. Also, seems like people are raving about the sushi counter which seems to be considered not bad when you take into consideration that it’s at a grocery store. But, so far, so good!
I think this will be my grocery store of choice while I’m here in Portland for the next 2 months.

I come here pretty much every day, as they really cover all of my daily needs. I get my eye drops from their pharmacy, «Tasty Bite» meals and «Silk» from their grocery area, and rubber gloves from their medical section. I wish they still had some simple clothing items as they once had, but I’m glad that they instead enlarged their better (aware) food section. Organic produce to motor oil, Freddy’s is on my list today.
I live closer to a Safeway, but I’m always let-​down there.

For many of us of a «certain age,» Interstate Fred’s, Stadium Fred’s, and Safeway near Portland State (10^th & Jefferson) before being remodeled or rebuilt used to be major sources of entertainment in terms of people watching. They were human stews mixed up of every possible kind of person around. Pretty red and blue lights provided by police cars quite often decorated these stores. In a less sophisticated time, it was the first place that many of us saw diversity (sexual and racial) outside our vanilla suburban worlds. Looking back at it, in some ways I prefer the old stores with all the craziness because there was no pretense. I appreciate the convenience and attractiveness of the rebuilds and remodels now, and there’s still quite a bit of the «human stew» element in all three stores to keep some of the fluff and pretense down to normal levels.
On the way to work this morning, I needed to pick up a couple lunch items at Interstate Fred’s, so to while away the half-​hour before my MAX train arrived, I dashed in and kind of flew through the store. I was afraid the store might be super-​crowded and slow me down and cause me to miss my train which is why I don’t often shop here. Fortunately, it was 8 a.m. and not crowded, so like I said I flew through and found the experience pleasurable. I got a couple of bagels that were straight out of the oven and fresh and warm and wheeled around and got some good cheese. I used one bagel to make a bagel cheese-​wich for lunch and saved the other for Monday-​morning lunch. I grabbed some orange juice as well in flight. The clerk was very pleasant and was amazed I had been able to get the bagels warm and fresh out of the oven.
When I do have time to spend here, I enjoy the Starbuck’s venue upstairs and find it a cozy place to read or peruse books nearby with drink cup in hand. They have some terrific sales and it never hurts my feelings to save money. They have nice plants in spring and summer, and the clothing section is great for basics. The home section is also fun to «window shop» in as well.
I’m glad I grew up with this store in it’s first incarnation. The memories are great fun. The size is occasionally a bit intimidating at times now as is the parking lot, but Fred Meyer stores have always been large. So I’ll put one foot in front of the other and keep my eyes open to all the possibilities when I have time to come here and shop.

Hello Hawthorne Fred Meyer!
I’m a fan of this FM. Really I think it’s one of the best in town. It offers a good selection of organic produce and I can almost always find an organic version of whatever I’m looking for here. They also have a good natural food section. Always well-​stocked and with sales promptly displayed. Annie’s Mac and Cheese made with organic pasta for only $ 1…yes please!
Then there’s a Moonstruck chocolate case in between the floral department and the bakery. Perfect for when I need my chocolate fix or small gifts. Moonstruck is the best. Behind Moonstruck is a sushi bar. I’ve never indulged, but it looked delicious.
I’ve often been shopping for wine when they have samples in the back. Last time I tried Strongbow Hard Cider, which was actually delicious when served over ice. Purchased some! They also have a bar in the back with beer on tap.
Upstairs you’ll find homegoods, which are often on sale. Electronics is up there too. Also, a Peet’s coffee. Drinks at this Peet’s are hit and miss, but overall I prefer Peet’s to Starbucks almost any day.
Kitchen stuff is downstairs behind the natural food section. I needed to swop out my old, aluminum (potentially neurotoxic) tea kettle for a new stainless steel one. I found one at this FM on sale for $ 11. Would have been much more at some fancy-​smancy kitchen store.
Self-​checkout people aren’t very attentive. The self-​checkout will freak out for no reason stating: «An attendant has been notified to assist you!», when really that attendant is just talking to her friend and not completing any assisting. There are additional checkout locations upstairs and at the back of the store.
The location is convenient, but the parking lot kind of sucks. Take that as you will. Overall this FM pretty much rocks!

It took me a while to wrap my head around the idea of a grocery store in which you could also buy an engagement ring, a living room set, and a pair of Lee jeans. But then somebody explained it to me as a vertical Super Target, and life made a little more sense. And now I’m a fan. Why do I like Fred Meyer?
— First and foremost, prices were reasonable. That’s #1 for a grocery store.
— The employees are all super friendly, particularly the dudes that work the meat case. They’re quick to make suggestions and tell you how to prepare that random hunk of animal that you aren’t sure how to cook. Good fellas, those meat case guys.
— The conveyor belt sushi isn’t what I’d call «good» but it’s certainly a novelty
— I got a flu shot here! Take that, Jenny McCarthy!
— The deli has a wide selection of delicious options. I’ve gone with a variety of the sandwiches, and all have been good. The salads are all tasty, and the mac and cheese makes my inner fat-​kid happy.
Now I can’t say that I’ve been to a ton of different markets in Portland, but we’re happy enough with Fred Meyer that there hasn’t really been a reason to look elsewhere.

The Hawthorne Fred Meyer is unique among all the other Fred Meyer stores for several reasons.
First a little bit of a negative but it is what’s called a marketplace store and they have extremely limited apparel basically a selection of some socks and underwear. Seasonally they do have winter gloves, scarves and hats.
Next for those looking for organic produce they boast having over 200 options.
The beer and wine selection is absolutely amazing as is the fresh meat department, service deli and they even have a rotating belt sushi bar that opens for lunch at 11.
There is a groller station with 16 beers too.
I’ve always been pleased with the help and courtesy of the associates and they all seem to go out of their way to make my shopping experience pleasurable.

My favorite of all the Portland Fred Meyers. The recent remodel has made the store bright and shiny. I like the addition of covered bike parking. I’m not sure who is cooking raw meat in the microwave at this hipster Fred Meyer location?
I can’t speak to the customer service. I always use self check out. Thank the gods for these machines.

When I lived in Seattle, Fred Meyer was the closest affordable grocery store to my apartment. I didn’t shop there because it was a nice grocery store, I shopped there because it was convenient. It was my back up plan when I could’t find what I needed at the neighboring Trader Joe’s.
Imagine my surprise when I stopped into this Fred Meyer on a recent trip to Portland and found: a conveyor belt of sushi, a Murray’s Cheese counter (with samples), a large organic section, and a GROWLER FILLING STATION with SIXTEEN different craft beers on tap. Unbelievable!
The prices here are still the same as the old Fred Meyer, rock bottom, but the new perks at this location are anything but same old. A growler filling station — somewhere in the South a Kroger store is weeping.
