Friends of the Children is a non-profit youth mentoring organization in Portland, Oregon This amazing organization was founded in 1993 right here in Portland to help at-risk youth. This program is similar to Big Brother, Big Sister programs that you may have heard of. However, unlike most mentoring agencies, Friends of the Children is staffed by full-time, paid professional mentors. It is their job to mentor a small group of children specially selected to be in the program. Friends of the Children begins working with selected children in Kindergarten and remains with them through high school graduation. A remarkable long-term commitment. The mentors spend time one on one with the youth each and every week. They work on academics, social skills, life skills, hygiene, cultural awareness, athletics, arts, and networking with other agencies to provide what that particular youth needs. Camps, theater, sporting events, music concerts, tutoring, group events for teens, college tours, etc. are all things that Friends provides. But mainly it provides a mentor, someone for the child to talk with and confide in as they grow up. It feels a bit strange to review this type of organization on Unilocal, since I mainly read and write restaurant or store reviews. But I just wanted to support an organization that I think very highly of. For more information, go to:
