Hair of the Dog brewery. What a weird name!?! This was the first brewery I hit up in Portland on a get away trip. I remember tasting their wheat ale, and ciders. Both were really good. We also ordered the cheese plate as well as a pickled veggies plate. Both were excellent. Everything is super flavorful and complimented each other real well. I really like the atmosphere and setup of this place. Location was it was ideal and parking wasn’t too difficult to find.

For you out of towners looking to cross off some of Portland’s many breweries, this is an absolute must. One of the most unique selections of beers you will come across, a very comfortable, family-friendly spot, and great service. Excellent starting point for your beer adventures here on the east-side.

Pork toast! Pickled vegetable plate! Spare rib! Everything was just delicious. Great prices($ 4 beers and it’s not even some HH special). Awesome space, really great for anyone looking to unwind after work.

Since I was hungry like a dog figured why not try the Hair of the Dog for lunch. Neat brewery place with a kitchen as an after thought near the bar. Ordered the grilled chicken sandwich which was a good size sandwich with chips. Had great flavor to it and food wise 4 – 5 star. The service well it’s amazing to me how businesses stay open when you have staff that aren’t 5 star. The man behind he bar told another customer a catastrophe was going on right now and there was a line of at least 8 deep waiting to cash out at the register. The man brought a glass of water and a menu and walked away. While walking away I told him I wanted a to go order. Said ok and continued on his way away. After a few minutes passed he came back for my order and walked away not mentioning how long it would be or nothing. He did the same to the could next to me as well that came in after me. They were served their food after me even though I ordered before them. So two meals were quicker to cook then one meal? Makes sense… to no one. All and all if I will be in the area I would try again and hopefully get better service or someone that depends on tips to be a little more friendly at the bar. Having been a bartender in the past it’s always cool to strike up a conversation with a stranger to hear where they are from or whatever else they may want to talk about. Didn’t try the beer still was on work time but the hey sounded good.

Beer was surprisingly bad. This place was recommended to me by two friends and the double IPA and the Rose were just off somehow. The service was great though; once I let them know I wasn’t a fan they were happy to let me have another. Tried their 3.5ABV beer(can’t remember the name right now) and it was drinkable. 3⁄5 beer 5⁄5 atmosphere and service

Excellent food, great beer! We showed up for lunch on a Thursday right at noon. The place was a little crowded but there was ample room to sit. I ordered the brisket plate and a couple tasters. The beers(rose & fred) were awesome and the brisket was even better. Melts in your mouth!!! My friend had the short ribs and they were even more tender than the brisket! Definitely recommend this place if you looking for tasty food and great beer.

Great Atmosphere, Great Service, Great Disappointment! This is one of those tough ones to write about. An older, well established brew pub with a loyal following and a lot of great reviews. I suppose it’s just me… but for all of its amazing qualities I was left underwhelmed and felt that value wise, this was pretty bad. Service and cleanliness– I must say are well done and deserve a lot or respect. This place was packed on a weeknight and I never felt rushed… server really took care of our group. Atmosphere– Fantastic, and doors open up to the street with beautiful tables. Trouble is that it is so loud inside, and the noise just carries. Add that with train whistle noise going by and it makes having a group get together a pretty solitary experience. They can’t really help the noise issue, no no fault to Hair of the Dog on that one. Beers– I’m just not impressed. The Adam and the Ruth were decent pale ales, and while the Blue Dot is their famous one, I just feel that in our city full of IPA options, this one isn’t all that great. Floral certainly, but lacking any real hoppy backbone or citrus notes up front. The value is bad however. There are no pints here, just 12oz glasses, and at $ 4.75 is really overpriced. Food– Decent menu of sandwiches, salads, and sides. Being vegetarian I’m fine with being limited, but apart from the ubiquitous mac n’ cheese there weren’t any real options for me food wise so I wasn’t able to have dinner. They do have some great cheese and cold cut plates you can split with a group, which is a really great thing to have and goes great with beer. Some good mixed pickles too! Overall I was just really disappointed and felt a little price gouged. Just my opinion of course, and I would encourage others to go and see for themselves. For me, I’ll stick with any number of craft breweries with a better value and food options for me.

I came here by accident. I needed to charge my phone so I walked in and took a seat at the bar. They had great looking beers on tap so I decided to have their Rose beer; Tripel with hibiscus and pink peppercorns. The color was like dark fruit punch but with a rose scent. This ended up being my favorite beer out of the big major ones I chose. The fact that I came by accident just means there are lots of hidden gems for beer, coffee, food. I recommend putting this place in your beer list for visits. Great under the radar beer joint!

This was my favorite stop in Portland. The beer and food are amazing. We had a good group and spent quite a bit of time here just enjoying the atmosphere and drink/food offerings. The menu is large and diverse and there should be no issues pleasing every one in your group. They have bigger plates if you’re hungry and smaller plates to share or are perfect if you just want a snack with your pint. I had the beef brisket and it fantastic, it will melt in your mouth. They are making some adventurous and strongly flavored beers here. Check their website for up to date tap listings. They also sell cellared/vintage bottles for consumption on site. They also have rotating beers«from the stone» and«from the wood.» The«stone» beers are fermented or aged in a concrete egg and, as you may have guessed, the«wood» beers are barrel aged beers. I had the Fred from the wood and it blow me away. This place is on my must visit list every time I go to Portland, I would recommend it highly to anyone. Cheers!

I like this brewery. They have some tasty beers, nice service and an eclectic vibe. Their food looks good too, but I didn’t try any this go round. Shame on me for not remembering the beers I sampled, but I liked each one. They had good depth of flavor and I remember one of them was a barley wine. My friend normally doesn’t like barley wines, but he really liked theirs here as did I. I would definitely stop by here again on future visits.

Spacious beer hall styled brewery slinging some tasty BBQ and quality brews. Surprisingly not too packed on a Friday night and as good of a place as any to start a bar hop. After reviewing pictures, decided on the Beef Brisket($ 8.50) and a beer sampler($ 9). Food took a little bit of time to come out, yet worth the wait. Brisket barely needs utensils to break apart — cooked to perfect and super moist. Potato salad is both creamy and hearty, a perfect compliment to the meat. As for the beer, the«Fred» was my favorite, a balanced Belgian and certainly strong. Food and beer here are great. Wish there was more meat on my plate, though that can be greedy. Hope this place does well enough so I can come back.

It’s not the prettiest neighborhood but HOTD is worth the trip. It’s quite a large room with a big bar and lots of seating. They have a good amount of draft beers but that wasn’t my main objective. I actually wanted to try some aged bottled brews that they had in their archives. Adam from the Wood, a 2015 wood barreled aged porter, was quite remarkable! After pouring and letting the beer breathe and warm up, it progressively became smoother and the tasting notes became clear. I also got the Bart, a peach flavored ale that was light and easy to drink. As much as I loved having an aged vintage bottle at HOTD, I still give Cascade a slight edge ahead on my rankings. I still have to come back and try other breweries but I liked Hair of the Dog so much that I got a shirt here. I shall proudly wear the Hydrant on my back and wave my fan club membership card with spirit.

Old school Portland craft brewery. The flight is a great experience, for a really good price you get an excellent range of beer styles from Hair of the Dog(that also range in their alcohol content). I think that while their standards on tap are fantastic, their bottle Selection is truly where it is at! Be prepared to drop some coin here if you’re looking for something amazing. We believe we paid around $ 9.00 for a 2014 bourbon-barrel aged Fred(which they call Bourbon Fred from the Wood, anything barrel-aged is ‘from the wood). It was SOGOOD. I’ve had so many barrel-aged beers, and this American Strong Ale really benefits from the aging process. We’re already in talks of going here again, we just need to save up to buy a bottle selection again — many, if not all, that need to be consumed on-site. Worth it.

Food and beer are solid. Even great sometimes. However, the servers as wells as the bussers have an obnoxious, holier than thou attitude. It almost feels like all of elitist Portland all rolled into one. However, you should get past that and eat the amazing food and drink the great beer.

Best brewery in town! Their Barrel-aged selection is on point, and their regular craft is well worth the visit. Very nice bar food spread also.

Great beer obviously. Some of the best IPAs around town and PDX is a pretty tough town to stand out as a brewery. Love their food. Started with an ass kick in the face with Chuck Norris duck wings and then the beef short ribs. The ribs were cooked in a way it’s so tender and juicy. It was an excellent food. I thought about it for a couple of days afterwards. I just wish the foods come with greater quantity with prices they are charging. It’s a brewery and the food should be more plentiful.

I visited in April 2013 and December 2015, and my opinion is the same. The flavors are aggressive and unbalanced. We ended up leaving most of our samples unfinished. After one(I think the Doggie Claws), I turned to my bf and said this brewery should be called Hair on the Back of Your Tongue.

One of the better brewhouses in Portland. Lucky for us, a fellow beerloving Unilocaler sent us their way. We did the taster Tray of their famous brews, plus few extra for 8 total. The short ribs were very tender, and the beermisu was perfect end to our meal. The staff was friendly and the high open ceiling room with wooden block tables were laid back in feel. This was out second attempt, for they were closed a week prior for a private party. Glad we went back.

It’s worth coming here for their bottle menu, alone. But we still got the Chuck Norris duck wings(falling off the bone) and the turkey and smoked mozzarella sandwich. The turkey was so incredible– obviously roasted with rosemary. Awesome. Excellent beertenders and just overall great. We came here twice during our PDX trip.

Beer: eh. Service: the girl we had was rude and didn’t say a word. Didn’t smile once. Food: got the pickle sampler. Eh. Probably won’t be back. There are so many breweries in the area, this one just doesn’t exceed my expectations. The good thing is that they donate a percentage(not sure how much) to seeing eye dogs. THAT is awesome.

This place is whatever in my eyes. There’s open seating and the place always seemed to be at capacity. Parking was a breeze ~~ there’s a lot in the back(make sure to park in the correct spot as they share it with other businesses). The service is nice and friendly and definitely was willing to answer any questions we had about the selection of beers. We wanted to have some variety so we decided to get a 3 oz taster of each of the beers on the draft menu(10 total). They all range from $ 2.25−2.50 each aside from 1 of the beers which was«Adam from the wood» which was $ 4 for a taster. To be quite honest, I wasn’t really a fan of most of the beers but if I had to pick one that stood out, it would have to be the«Adam.» It’s a nice dark beer that was rich with flavor. A little chocolate in it and had a smokey feel from the barrel. Fred wasn’t bad either if you’re into more of a candy-taste. Overall, my taste buds just didn’t click with this brewery. We also got an order of the mac n cheese and I was utterly disappointed. It literally has no taste. Plain as can be… What pissed me off even more was that the table next to us literally had 2x the amount of mac n cheese that we got on our plate. What is up with that? At that point, I was out. I’m glad I tried this place out. Anyone who asks me for a recommendation for a list of breweries won’t be hearing me say Hair of the Dog…

When I first walked in, I really didn’t know what to expect. We were here with out of town guests and we figure before dinner we would stop in to get a beer. Because we didn’t know what to expect, the service and the beer totally wow’ed us and we will definitely be repeat customers. My favorite thing was their cider while the husband really like their barrel aged Beers. Benefit of visiting this brewery? Part of their proceed goes towards charity according to their menu. The atmosphere in the brewery is very relaxing and chill. Great place for a beer and chat after work or to take an out of town guests! I definitely will visit again because I just enjoyed the experience so much.

After a few hours on a plane, this place was my first stop in PDX and it was exactly what I needed. There was some sort of special batch of a single-malt scotch barrel-aged ale that day that set me back $ 12 for a full pour and was worth every smokey, rich, peaty cent. The hot pastrami sandwich on a french roll was a thing of beauty and the pickle sampler reeked of awesomeness. Give Hair of the Dog a go.

One of the unique and coolest Portland craft breweries around. Famous beers like«Fred», «Ruth» and coupled with a logo of a «dog» and associated with Craft Beers — you really can’t not like their brand. They DO have good beers. Darned good to back it all up. Try a flight and you won’t be disappointed.

Tasting glasses are so adorable! We got the«Walk the Dog» four 3oz tasting flight, which was okay for the most part. I enjoyed the two seasonal specials that we added to our flight more. Beer didn’t make a lasting impression on me overall. I think my favorite taster was a collaboration with another brewery. There wasn’t a lot of natural lighting in here, which was a bummer. Maybe because we came later in the day. This place didn’t really stand out to me. I’m not sure why. The bar area seemed very separated and tables were scattered across the room, but it didn’t feel like a very welcoming place. Like Deschutes, you put in your order through a waiter/waitress if you sit at a table. I’m not a big fan of this as I like to talk to the bartenders and I think service is much slower. It worked for Deschutes as people go there more for food, but all taprooms I’ve gone to that does this seems to have slower service. You’re better off going to the bar yourself to grab your drink first and then find a table or simply sit at the bar. We also got a Pickle Platter and all I can say is that it was interesting.

Hair of the dog is a brewery I imagine only In Portland. It’s in an old warehousey area. I think there are train tracks. The location is perfection. It’s relation to other breweries gives it a competitive advantage as does its garage door access. The flight is predetermined for you. I honestly didn’t care a ton for two of them. I know Adam Fred and Ruth were three. I think. I can’t remember which I didn’t like, but I’d suggest trying them and getting a pint of what you like. They donate a portion of your purchase to helping rescue, so regardless of what you like, bro your part to give back!

My favorite brewery visit in Portland. I loved this place so much that I asked my boyfriend to get me a souvenir tasting glass, which are shaped like mini wine glasses. And I hate bring back souvenirs from trips. Every beer we tasted was good and every dish we ordered was yummy. You have to get the brisket and short ribs. Don’t pick between the two and just order both! The group’s favorite beer was the bottled beer that they only sell and serve on site. It’s from a bourbon cask! When you’re picking among so many breweries in the city, definitely check this one out.

Tip: Don’t forget that if you park on the far side of the tracks, you may need to wait quite a while for a slow moving freight train to pass. Big, friendly, self-seating space is great for groups or casual gatherings. Order the brisket or the short rib. Both are fatty, and the portions aren’t fantastic, but still worth it. Try the Bourbon Fred from the bottle list.

Yes, Portland has a plethora of breweries around, making the locals spoiled for choice, but we found Hair of the Dog as one well worth a visit. The tasting flight is the best way to get introduced to their beers, all of which we loved, and we split a few sandwiches between three of us which were not amazing but did the job keeping our stomach’s well lined. Brewery feels like somewhere between an industrial space and a giant garage filled with an eclectic assortment of knick-knacks, which we liked a lot.

I was craving the Mac and cheese the entire day knowing we would come here for dinner, it was horrible. It literally tasted as though I was eating tablespoons of salt mixed with cheese. I wanted to like it because I was starving and saving my appetite but I couldn’t do it, salty food is one thing I can’t tolerate, it’s unbeatable. The beef short ribs had a good flavor but 70% of the meat was fat. The potato salad was good. We didn’t order drinks or beer so my review is based on food only. You can’t smoke outside on benches and kitchen closes 45 minutes prior to closing. Service was good, but food was to bad to give more than 2 stars.

Four 3 oz tasting flight. Yep! Eight 3 oz tasting flight. Yep! My advice? Go with the eight beer flight because it’s Beer Week every week in Portland. :) It’s an open space venue, so you get all the natural lighting and air. There’s a huge bar and tons of table seating. Bartenders and servers are all very hipster and laid back. Crowd is chill, so go enjoy some beer!

Everybody is so nice and helpful. You always feel welcome, whether you’re a regular or only vist once every 2 years. There’s plenty of places to sit and a menu that appeals to all, whether you be into steaks, salads or a nice cheese plate. Heck, it’s a nice place to be even if you don’t drink beer — although you’ll miss out on some good stuff. Stop by. The more the merrier. However, be prepared for the hardship of having to choose between these small wonders — my current dilemma is whether to choose an Adam aged in bourbon barrels or oak barrels with cherries. Life can be tough like that. ;)

Rode shotgun halfway across the country ‘to help a friend move’ but, in all honesty, this was the reason I spent 3 days in a car with my buddy. This was my destination. Oh, to have the time to loiter and take in all the beers. The place was packed on a Saturday night(surprise!) But we grabbed a seat at the bar without a wait, and a flight of excellent world class beer was in my face before long. Worth every mile. The place is open, high ceilings and the requisite brewery décor, eccentric, functional, exactly what I expected to find. I tend to stand out in bars in Iowa but felt at home, with my own kind, in this place. Service? Ehh it was busy and I didn’t expect much, but managed to get some soup that went so well with the beer I almost forgot(good thing I took notes). I’ll be back. Probably often if I can make the move.
