Hoyt Arboretum

So beautiful even in da rain. The trails are organized according to tree families, purty neat!

This is a nice part of Washington Park, There is an information center with a small gift shop where you can get information and maps for hiking in the area. There are lots of trails so just pick one and see where it leads, within the Arboretum lots of plants are signed so you can know what you are looking at.
The walks are popular with lots of picnic spots, and photo ops. Come in spring and summer and odds are good something will be in bloom. In the fall leaves are changing. It really is nice in any time of year.

We weren’t planning to visit the Arboretum but we ended up with extra time to kill and needed to find new attractions — I didn’t think this place would be interesting but it turned out to be a really nice hike around the mountains! The trails are divided into different sections based on the types of trees, and it was really nice to spend some time in the nature after having spent so much time in the city… and it’s all FREE! What more can I say?!

The Hoyt Arboretum is a gorgeous place in Portland (not that far at all from downtown, which is hard to believe).
Pick your choice of trail (I was determined to end up among the maple trees, which were beautiful), and keep your eyes open for the beautiful sights. The trails aren’t terribly taxing, and are great for casual walking/​hiking/​trail running (aka friendly for all ages/​levels of fitness).
I was bummed that the nearby Japanese garden was closed when I visited, but that’s just another reason to return to this lovely, untainted area.

Gorgeous park and views! Tons of trail options which are easy to follow. Very beautiful varieties of scenery. A great place for hiking and/​or snapping photos in the area.

This place is just absolutely gorgeous. Came across this place accidentally but so glad we did. There are a ton of different trails you can do. The arboretum is absolutely beautiful and so green and the air is so fresh. Walked around for a while and enjoyed all the different trees and sights. Saw a couple chilling on top of one of the hills in chairs with a table set up with wine and snacks… genius. Will have to come prepared and do that next time.

I visited here yesterday and hiked by myself on a foggy 9am Monday morning. It was scary at first because of the fog and hiking solo so I decided to just go to the Overlook Trail and to the Holly Loop. But this place was so peaceful and mesmerizing that I couldn’t resist so I decided to do the Wildwood Trail. Map said it’s a 2 hour hike. It did take me 2 hours to hike but I was hiking really slow admiring the beauty of it all, the aroma of the trees, fresh air, took lots of pictures and also did the Maple Trail, White Pine Trail to the Fir Trail and ending at the Hoyt Arboretum Visitor Center. From there I hiked back to the Veterans Memorial. Total hike was about 1 hour 46 minutes.
I’m visiting from Los Angeles and we’re experiencing a drought so I felt like I walked through LOTR’S Middle Earth. Also, this place is totally accessible. Took the blue line to the Oregon zoo then stopped by the Discovery Museum World Forestry Center to get a trail map for $ 1.
Wildwood to Maple Trail is a pretty easy to moderate hike (flat with moderate inclines). There area few places with stairs but it’s not that bad and if you’re not a hiker, just choose a different path. White Pine and Fir trails have moderate to semi hard inclines but take your time to enjoy your view and you won’t feel the hike at all.
I did see some people there, some with dogs. Also a good spot to go for a run but just be careful of the tree roots protruding on the path.

This is a beautiful place to go for an easy hike, and is a very very quick drive from the city center. There are numerous interwoven trails, so it’s easy to go for as short or as long of a hike as you want. Also, the terrain is pretty level and all trails are very well maintained making this an easy option for all ages and fitness levels.
Many of the trees are labelled with the species name which is fun for the wannabe botanists (me?), and the large variety of trees means there’s also a huge number of weird mushrooms in the fall!
It is helpful to take a photo of the map, or you can pick up a paper map at the visitor’s center (which also has relatively clean bathrooms)

Washington Park would really be something without featuring the Hoyt Arboretum, but it is much more as a result of having it. Tall trees are spread out over much of Washington Park leading into Forest Park. Part of the theme is having nature of all sorts. To say that there is many trails is a big understatement.
I’ve been to the Hoyt Arboretum at least a few times by now. It starts at the Oregon Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial and continues up some stairs and across the street. There is a visitor center, and once you pass it, the action begins.
There are a few more steps. Usually, I don’t see the whole arboretum, because that’s a lot to do at a time. Signs show you how to move around the arboretum and Washington Park at large. There is a nice variety and sometimes they stick unusual trees in the middle of the paths.
This is a municipal treasure. There could be more food and the bus can run more often, but the raw beauty overwhelms this.
Hopefully, you can spare some of your day at some point to visit the Hoyt Arboretum.

Just downright beautiful. There are numerous trails of different lengths and difficulties; we went on the Redwood Trail that takes around half an hour for the entire loop (well, we took an hour because I wanted to investigate every unfamiliar plant and the rest of my family wanted to do a mini photoshoot in every spot of sunshine) and it was just breathtaking. Not only were the redwoods and sequoias magnificent, but the entire forest was serene and uncrowded and didn’t feel at all like it was only two miles from downtown Portland.
It helps to have walking shoes, but the trail is easy enough that they’re not necessary. The arboretum is also a great place to take children! My kid sister is already evidently a city girl but she loved the forest and admiring the scenery all the same. Make sure to stop by the visitor’s center before you start as well — the staff is very friendly and will explain all the different trails to you and suggest one or two depending on what you’re looking for.

We wandered a few trails for quite some time, looking at al of the trees and shrubs that make this place so wonderful. The trails are well-​maintained and not very busy, as many people opt for their cars or the bus to go through the park. My recommendation is to put on your walking shoes and have some fun. The walks are therapeutic and serene.

I love this place for walking, running, thinking, hugging trees, and bird watching! I also enjoy volunteering here from time to time. The staff is wonderful, and very knowledgable. I am obsessed with trees, and I know they really take care of this place. The regular volunteers here are awesome, too. Everyone deeply cares about what they do here. It is such a great place for getting outside. Luckily, I live very close by.

Just one of the best features Portland has to offer. As much as Portland as a city is changing, the natural beauty of this park and area has to offer is bar none and I hope it stays free and accessible to the public at large.
This is the time of year to get your Spring on. The blooms, scents, and wild life are in full force.
Great place during the week days to get back to a little nature — I often come here to clear my head and for a quick, local romp around on the trails.
Like other Unilocalers report, a great place to bring visitors when you want to stay close and easy. The Japanese Gardens are close and are not to be missed.

I strolled through the Arboretum for the first time today. I was entirely enchanted by the delishesly delightful aromas wafting from myriad magnolia blossoms. Medicinal varietals practically begged me to breathe in their heady, yuzu-​like fragrance.
I also walked the fir and pine trails and found myself lovingly running the crisp soft greenness of newest of needles through my finger folds. Such pungent air, such stately exemplars of lovingly cared for trees met my gaze at every bend of the pristine pathways!
Parking near the visitor center on a Friday afternoon wasn’t an issue. Better yet, Max it on up there!

What a gorgeous place for a walk or picnic! Well-​maintained trails/​walkways and many different routes to choose from. Can be a bit busy on the weekend but still a serene place to be. Trails connect to Washington Park, Japanese Garden, Rose Test Garden, and even Forest Park!

Hoyt Arboretum and Forest Park in general is where you’re going to take visiting family for the quintessential Portland hike. It’s also the first hike you’ll likely do in Portland.
Hoyt provides the perfect spot to start, it offers parking, a visitor’s center and plenty of trail maps posted. A lot of the trails are 2 mile loops, but if you take the Oak trail at Hoyt to the Wildwood trail, you’re in for a real good hike. To get the best of everything, take 2 cars and park one at your ending location– the entrance to Macclay Park at NW 29^th Ave and Upshur St. This hike will take you up to Pittock Mansion, which is a perfect mid-​way resting spot to use a public bathroom and catch an awesome view.
At 4.3 miles with plenty of switch-​backs and steep inclines, this is a perfect butt and thigh workout. I was couch-​ridden for the hours to follow.

Planning to go to the Rose Garden, my best friend and I decided to keep driving up the hill to see what’s up ahead. And we were so glad we did! UC Davis has a beautiful arboretum, but this one takes the cake.

Put your cell phones away for an hour or two, and enjoy nature to the fullest here. The air is fresh and everything is green! This place is definitely great on many different occasions: to relax, to exercise, or even to take a date!

Every time I go here, like once a year… I remember how much I love this place! This is the largest park in city limits in the country I believe. Google it. :) so many trails that interlink throughout this humongous park. You can end up at the zoo, nw ptld, rose gardens, a random neighborhood etc. it seems to never end!
As I was hiking my merrily way on the Wildwood trail the other day, I was enjoying the tall trees shading the clean paths and the quiet far off sounds of tricking waters and birds/​wildlife. I also like how there are many a runner, hiker or walker (accompanied by lil furry bffs) :) on these trails, so although you may be searching for quiet and serenity in nature, you are not scary alone wandering a deep dark forest…
At one point along our hike, I notated in my daydreaming head that I will gather myself a hot matcha tea and good old paperbook novel and wander my way to a moss covered bench surrounded by looming oak trees and delve deep in my book one day soon… sigh…now that’s my happy place. :D
If you park at the arboretum, you can pick up a trifold map of the trails and also use the clean indoor bathrooms before you head off on your expedition. Also there are random maps placed throughout the park so you get an idea where your heading. :)

This place is sprawling with many, many trails and it’s completely FREE! Sure, you may need to pay to park but there is street parking that is free in the area as well.
There are plenty of trail markers around BUT I wish there were more maps. There was a map here and there but since many of the trails intersect and go off at different angles we found the trail markers with two-​dimensional arrows only pointing up, down, left or right — to not be so helpful. We never ended up staying on the trail we intended. But we only had an hour or so to wander so we didn’t stray far enough to get lost.
