Intrepid Athletics – CrossFit Intrepid North

There aren’t many places (or gyms for that matter) that truly embrace the meaning of the word «community». Yet, after my introductory class, I knew Intrepid was different. The moment I walked into the building, I felt a sense of camaraderie and friendship. There is no room for negativity here; everyone is quick to introduce themselves and also help you push through that last rep. Sean and Ruth do a tremendous job of individualizing each workout to fit your fitness level and are constantly critiquing your technique. This not only minimizes injury but also makes the classes empowering and fun. If CrossFit isn’t your cup of tea, then maybe Strongman, Gynnastics, or Weightlifting is your jam. Even kids can get involved! If you have been on the fence about trying CrossFit, or any other class Intrepid offers, do yourself a favor and try it out. Your first class is free and you will not regret it!

I am an active individual: climb, surf, weight train, run calisthenics; a master of none, having always considered about joining cross fit, I finally took the initiative. Here’s the deets about the gym
1. Low volume from coach to student. Which means you get more face time, technique training from others
2. Focuses on form than looks: they will decrease your weights to make sure you develop good form rather than «looking» good in the cross fit world like making sure you PR and all that.
3. Laid back, but still competitive. No one here is trying to out compete you, you can go to another gym for that one. But it still has that competitive edge bc there are cross fit athletes there who embody what cross fit is like the owners and several students there: yeah ripped as mother…
4. Friendliness, everybody is easy going to say what’s up too, talk about why you want to throw up after class, what kind of dog you got, what kind of music you listen to on walks on the beach etc.
5. No one gets left behind. Everyone here cheers for each other, the last person finishing the WOD gets the loudest and biggest praise.
6. The owners are invested in you, that makes a difference when the customer is invested in the owner.
7. The music is awesome, NO WHERE have I listened to Celine Dion, Barry White and other slow bump n grind music doing burpees, thrusters, rowing etc than here. I think they play slow music to get the angst out, then throw a power song in there. Then you feel like you can crush the WOD.
8. Nothing more to add, if you see me there. Which I’m there often, and I don’t say hi, I owe you a protein bar

Was a member of the defunked crossfit HEL and came back when Ruth and Sean took over the space to start Intrepid. They transformed this space and took it to the next level. The coaching is very good and the level of knowledge that Sean and Ruth have is unmatched. I’ve visited other Crossfit Gyms through out the NW and have never been anywhere more welcoming.

I really like this place. I have never done sports or exercised at anything with consistency. But that all changed when I started at Intrepid a year ago.
Here are my reasons why I go to Intrepid Athletics:
1. The coaches — They taught me the right moves to climb a rope, lift weights, do a pull-​up, etc. Also, the coaches are open, honest and friendly.
2. The workouts — Never boring and always just the right amount of challenge.
3. The gym — It’s clean, easy to get to, and has lots of good equipment.
4. The other members — Everyone is welcoming and relaxed.
5. The kids’ classes — Fun to teach kids health and fitness from a young age.

There’s three things newcomers should know about Intrepid PDX.
1) Sean and Ruth are accommodating and encouraging coaches with a keen eye for technique and individualized fitness progression
2) They have built and continue to build a strong, friendly, and non-​judgmental community of athletes.
3) They take pride in the gym, investing in equipment and its members
Intrepid PDX is great for everyone, from the very beginner, to the burgeoning pro (and even a habitual novice like me)

I can’t say enough positive things about Intrepid. I came to the gym as a complete novice, and I was beyond intimidated when it came to entering a real life CrossFit gym. Turns out, I had nothing to be afraid of. The coaches, Ruth and Sean, and every member of the Intrepid community welcomed me with open arms. In just a few short months, I have made so many new friends and feel 100% a part of the Intrepid community/​family.
The small class size makes me feel like I’m receiving one on one personal training. Ruth and Sean are both SO knowledgeable and devoted to correct form to prevent injury. Ruth went so far as to provide me with a personal mobilizing plan to fix my poor posture. She checks on my progress daily to ensure that I have a solid foundation, and I’m quickly becoming stronger and more knowledgeable.
This gym is my happy place.

If you are a seasoned athlete or brand new to fitness, Intrepid Athletics is for you. While most of their classes are specifically Crossfit, they also have classes for weightlifting, strongman and gymnastics. Each class I learn something new and I become a better athlete. The coaches and community are incredible and they’ve developed such an inviting and positive environment. I couldn’t be more thankful for these people! 5 stars! Go check it out!

Five stars, without hesitation! If you are thinking of trying Crossfit for the first time, or continuing your Crossfit journey, Intrepid Athletics PDX is the place to go. Sean and Ruth are knowledgeable about Crossfit, Olympic Weightlifting, and Strongman. They are very attentive when coaching, and help to make sure you are getting the most out of your workout, while using good form. They will help you reach the goals that you have set for yourself. They are excellent coaches and wonderful, kind people.
The gym is clean, well equipped, and comfortable. The community is friendly, fun and supportive.

I joined Intrepid about six months ago and it was honestly one of the best decisions I have made. Owners and coaches Ruth and Sean really know their stuff — from crossfit to strongman to gymnastics to weightlifting classes, there is a little of something for everyone! Each and every class I come away learning something new about a movement or technique. I also love the community of people! The atmosphere at Intrepid is really supportive and encouraging. The class size are smaller than most gyms in the area so you really get personal attention and coaching. I’m so happy I found Intrepid — I couldn’t imagine going anywhere else now!

I absolutely love this place. The coaches are amazing and really care about your goals. They are incredibly well trained and educated and know just what you need to make you a stronger person. The atmosphere is fun, the members are super friendly and it’s a place that you never want to leave. They give you much more than just a workout. They help you build confidence that translates to every other part of your life.

Ruth and Sean are GREAT coaches, great attention to detail in your movements, always making sure you’re doing it right instead of doing more of anything. They really set up you to have great gains whether you’re interested in crossfit, olympic lifting or some fun strongman workouts. So glad to have found this gym!!!

I joined this Crossfit gym nearly a year ago after driving by for several months and being very intimidated. Once I attended my first class I was hooked. I love that classes are full of individuals who are all pursuing their own fitness goals. Sean and Ruth are great coaches and have worked hard with me to correct bad posture and improper lifting techniques. My teenage daughter as well as my younger son both attend Crossfit classes relative to their age and ability. I am happy with the level of coaching and attention they both receive.
I travel a lot and usually visit a different gym when I do. I can say that Intrepid has the best coaching, newest equipment and strongest community support. Give them a try, I think your first class is free.

I am not an all star athlete. I’m actually pretty awkward when it comes to most fitness regimes. After much deliberation between joining Intrepid and hiring a personal trainer, Intrepid was the most economical choice. Plus your first class is free!
Flash forward to 5 months later, I have gained so much knowledge about my form and various techniques/​practices. Sean and Ruth are very patient and easily adapt workouts to my level. I never feel ignored and the small sized classes definitely help. The gym is also full of awesome and inspiring folks. I love Intrepid Crossfit!

Ruth is an awesome coach! Her instructions really help me catch my form and correct it. Clean and well equipped facility, and super convenient location in Alberta Arts. And the price is right. Try it out!

By far the best Crossfit gym in Portland! Or maybe anywhere (and I’ve been to a lot of them)
What makes this place so good? Let me tell you.
1. Small classes with focused and dedicated instructors. Ruth and Sean really pay attention to you, and they are invested in making sure you push yourself but that you do so with good form. Their coaching results in sustained improvement without injury.
2. Interesting workouts with several types of classes. You can take straight up, good old fashioned Crossfit classes, and in addition they offer weightlifting, gymnastics, strongman, etc. These focused classes let you develop your skills in specific areas.
3. They offer kids classes
4. There is a really nice vibe in there. A great community of people attend their classes and everyone supports each other.
5. It’s a super great price for the level of coaching and variety of classes offered.
Anyway, join this gym. You won’t be sorry!

Intrepid Athletics is an excellent gym with fantastic gym atmosphere and great coaches. I worked with both Ruth and Sean before they moved from Los Angeles to Portland. Ruth was my cross training coach for almost 4 years. Sean was my weightlifting coach for 2 years. Both of them are very knowledgable and always looking for opportunities to improve their training methods. I am not the most athletic type. Ruth and Sean would modify the workouts and lift programs to adapt to my needs. The classes are kept at small size to have a high coach-​to-​athlete ratio. Both Ruth and Sean are very attentive during classes. I have the peace of mind knowing that my coaches are watching me when I am moving heavy weights!

I dropped in to Intrepid PDX for a Saturday morning CrossFit workout while visiting Portland over Thanksgiving weekend; I’ve got nothing but great things to say about this gym! The coaching was spot on, the energy from Ruth and Sean (the owners) was awesome and the other folks there for the workout were friendly and welcoming. Two of the folks were relatively new to CrossFit and Ruth really took the time to make sure they understood the lifts and movements and performed them safely and properly.
This gym is really clean with super nice equipment, a couple showers and even a kids room for the wee ones. I travel a lot and have visited many CrossFit boxes over the years; Intrepid PDX is easily up there at the top. I perused the chalkboard to checkout WODs from earlier in the week and was genuinely impressed with the programming. Plus they also offer traditional Olympic Weightlifting and Strongman classes! Sean must’ve seen me eyeballing the atlas stones during the CrossFit class because he offered to help me work with them once we finished the WOD. Love it!
I used to be pretty anti-​CrossFit before I drank the Kool-​Aid and I still hear about how «dumb» CrossFit is from some of my friends and co-​wokers; I will totally admit that there are some sketchy boxes out there. This isn’t one of them. I’m genuinely looking forward to the next time I’m in Portland so I can workout here again.

Intrepid Athletics is the BEST!!! I was able to work out under Ruth and Sean (owners) at Intrepid in El Segundo for 3 years. They are very knowledgeable and teach in a way that ensures good technique. They are great coaches and great people. The environment they create makes working out fun. Portland is very lucky to have them. If you want a great workout and start on a journey elevating your fitness, you should go to Intrepid Athletics PDX!

I was lucky enough to start my journey with Crossfit at Intrepid Athletics’ first location, in El Segundo, CA. I have since moved out of the area and been forced to find a new gym (traffic, gah!), and I miss the quality of the Intrepid coaching and atmosphere so much! If you’re thinking about swinging by Intrepid PDX, here are some things I can tell you:
— New to Crossfit? Awesome! Intrepid is a great place to learn; the coaches take their time teaching you how to perform every movement correctly and safely. Everything is scalable to your level. You will get a great workout at whatever intensity you are comfortable with.
— Crossfit veteran? Great too! Intrepid has a great variety of classes; I have personally participated in their Crossfit classes, Weightlifting Classes (EXCELLENT instruction, of a very high quality with great coaching experience), Strongman classes, and yoga and rowing classes added into the programming. There is no shortage of new things to learn and new movements to work on. Coaching is excellent in every discipline.
— Into Weight LIfting? Please see Ruth and Sean for an Olympic Weightlifting class. Class sizes are much smaller than the crossfit classes, which allows for a lot of individual attention. I’ve definitely seen my lifting improve spending time in Intrepid’s lifting classes!
These guys are the real deal, and really great people! I highly recommend swinging by and getting a good sweat, you won’t regret it!

You will receive world class coaching — strong foundation of knowledge, technique driven, tailored for your level ability whether you are severely out of shape or an Olympic athlete. Great programming and variety. Real weightlifting coaching. Guest coaching from specialists; we had the pleasure of multiple seminars from a national level gymnast to name just one.
Top notch facility. You can expect to have all the equipment you need. It will be clean and well maintained.
Their mission is to help you feel your best so that you can get the most out of life. Great vibe. When you meet your fitness goals they will be as happy, if not more, than you. I have a great time working out here.
