i got the lengua and it was the proverbial bomb. don’t miss this place just cause it’s a little east, or because it is an obvious drug cover-​up (KILO??? c’mon!) or cause it’s hard to find the entrance. it is delicious and authentic.

First of all, Kilo de Carnes… how great of a name is that?
So, we ended up eating at their booth at the Cinco de Mayo festival, and were instantly hooked, so we ventured out to SE 112^th and Powell to check out the restaurant itself.
That’s where it got a little confusing. The outside of the building says El Matate, but we recognized their grill from the festival. It is the back of an old pickup truck, license plates and tailgate still attached, so we knew we had the right place. There is a small market in the building with a little bit of produce and a meat counter, and then seating for about 30 people in the restaurant.
The menu’s stated that it was Kilo De Carnes Taqueria, so maybe they have different names for separate sections? Anyhow… on to the food.
The menu is simple: They have Carne Asada, Pollo Asado, Camarones (shrimp), and then your normal tacos/​burritos/​etc. The Carne Asada plates start at $ 15.99, but while that is steep, the amount of food you receive will probably feed a family of four. BRING YOUR FRIENDS! You really do get a Kilo of Carne.
The Pollo Asado plates start with ¼ chicken at $ 7.99. Both the Carne and Pollo come with tortillas, rice, and either salad or beans.
The tacos are $ 2, and come simple with onions and cilantro, and a good amount of meat as well.
