Latourell Falls

I was probably standing about 10 – 15 feet away from the bottom of Latourell Falls. What an AWESOME experience! My face was getting wet from the mist of the Falls. I was not down there for too long since it was cold and I was getting wet. LOL. I did not do the loop hike since my fiancé and I just completed a 13 mile hike at Eagle Creek Trail.
I want to say that it is safe to come here on a Tuesday around 5 PM. There was only 1 other car in the parking lot.

I love this particular falls along the old historic highway that runs into the Columbia Gorge. The drive itself is beautiful! But once you hit the falls! WOW! There are many falls that you can hit that lead up to Multnomah falls, Latourell Falls is the last one out before you go hit Vista House or the first one in after you hit Vista House depending on which way you are coming. There are a few ways you can view Latourell Falls, you can hike up to the top, and or you can walk right up to the actual falls, on a hot day believe me walking in and around and behind them is just AWESOME! There is something that is just magical about this particle falls that catches me every time. I just absolutely love coming here. Now that I’m actually learning professional photography I can’t wait to get better pics of this. My tripod had some mishaps. Trust me, you need a tripod to get the right affect of the water! So I will be back and I will be posting some amazing shots!

What a great little hike this is. The fact it was a sunny, sunny day combined with the residual effects of a long, dreary winter might have boosted the hike’s rating a bit, but it’s at least a 4.5. As a «loop» hike the recommendation we had was to do the hike in a clockwise fashion. Absolutely the right approach I’d say. The east side of the path (the way up) is rockier and slightly more difficult to traverse, with the west side seemingly less rocky, and slightly less scenic. The path itself is comfortably wide, with few if any spots where the «–off-​eek factor» was much noticeable. The upper falls were stunning with all the water that a mid March day would normally produce. In my old fossil hike rating book this should have come out as MODERATE, but other than the first 10 minutes Latourell was easy. Just a great hike!

This was the BEST Waterfall experience i’ve had on my vacation! You get to be right under the waterfall. Unfortunately it was slightly raining, I did not take my chances of swimming. I should have though!
I will definitely be back!
Come here early to beat the tourist rush! Take a lot of pictures and enjoy your time!

On a recent trip to Waterfall Alley, I made Latourell Falls my first stop. I drove down from Vista House through the windy roads to the small parking lot next to the falls. The lot fills up quickly any maybe had about 20 – 30 spots. There are bathrooms on site and picnic tables just in case you want to sit for a second.
You can see the falls from the Columbia River Hwy and that was the point that my breathing quickened. It’s a wonder I didn’t have an accident from gawking. I went up the short steep hill that leads to a viewpoint of the falls but there were some couples up there being all lovey-​dovey which kind of ruined my moment to just take it all in. Nothing against it, I just wish they would have moved a little bit more to either side of the viewpoint so other people who were crowding behind me could also take in the view.
I decided to head down to the lower trail to get a better view. It’s about a 0.25−0.5 mile walk from the parking lot. The trail is paved but badly in disrepair in places so I would suggest being careful if you are in a wheelchair. Anyway I was expecting the falls to be roped off or some sort of platform viewing point at a distance from the falls, but noooooo! You come to the end of the trail and you’re like maybe 50−100ft from the splashzone. I have never been so close to crying about how beautiful nature is until the point when I took off my glasses, leaned my head back, closed my eyes and let the mist rush past my face and encircle my whole body. What made it even better was that there was no one there. So I stood there for about 10 minutes in peace & quiet just listening to the gush of the thousands of gallons of water that rushed over the top of the rocks above. This will definitely go on my personal landmarks list as this was one of the best experiences of my life.
Of course then I snapped back into reality once a eastern european tour group came bounding down the trail with all their sounds of glee, but not before a got a few pics & videos with my phone to savor the moment later. Please check this place out if you’re in the area. You may want to save it for last since it’s truly amazing.

Five miles east of Crown Point is the first in a stretch of famous waterfalls along the historic Columbia Gorge Scenic Highway. It’s name is Latourell Falls and it should be stop #1 (after Vista House at Crown Point) on your Oregon Waterfall Tour because Latourell Falls is just an easy 2-​minute paved walk from the free parking lot.
Besides being convenient and easy, Latourell Falls is also beautiful. Water from Latourell Creek falls straight down over 200 feet from a basalt cliff draped with golden lichon. The beauty of the dark stone, bright lichon, and cold water make a wonderful photo opportunity for tourists or pros.
Latourell Falls is officially within Guy W. Talbot State Park just 2.5 miles from nearby Bridal Veil Falls and 6 miles from famous Multnomah Falls. A paved parking lot is available just after crossing the historic Latourell Creek Bridge built in 1914. From the parking lot, follow the paved path down to the base of the waterfall. If you want go to the top, Latourell Falls Trail is a 2.4 mile loop with an elevation gain of 520 ft that will take you to the upper falls.
Oregon is blessed with a bounty of natural attractions and few offer this level of convenience, ease, and beauty just 30 minutes from Portland that small Latourell Falls does.

Easily one of the greatest sites to visit while staying in Portland. The journey there and back was simply breathtaking.
I consider this place a major win when your immigrant family has nothing disapproving to say about it, and that says a lot! Driving along the 84 East from Portland, you’ll encounter stunning views on the highway as you balance between Oregon and Washington states. When you approach the falls, you’ll see mossy green forestry that takes you into a fairytale.
Finally, you’ve arrived into the parking lot. There is a short hike up the hill to a scenic view of the Falls, and it is simply beautiful. The visuals and sounds of nature will take you away and make you forget all your troubles (and the half hour drive it took to get here from the city). Snap a photo here!
Next, walk down the short trail to get up close and personal with the falls. The gushing stream of water will definitely make it chilly, so be sure to carry a light jacket if it’s early winter. While we came with some forestation still alive, I can imagine its beauty when it’s snowy and frothy in the dead of February.
Definitely worth a spot on any trip to Portland. Make time! If you flew into PDX, rent a car and drive up. You won’t regret it.

Awesome alternative to the more touristy Multnomah Falls, which is a short drive away. I decided to check out Latourell this time, and you can get really nice views with a super short walk down the stairs. However, you can also get a good hike if you decide to walk up the hill, and we walked up for at least half an hour and still didn’t reach the top. My only complaint is I didn’t see any signs letting you know how much further you have on the path, or any clear trail markers or maps for the different routes you can take for different views. I still got some good photos of the falls–

and really enjoyed the mini hike. I’d highly recommend Latourell since it also wasn’t as busy as Multnomah, but still come early if you want to secure parking in their small lot. A good amount of people park along the side of the road also.

Latourell Falls is one of many waterfalls along the highway. There is a small parking lot you can park at which doesn’t fill up at all because this waterfall isn’t visited as much as Multnomah is.
There is a short walk from the parking lot that you can take down to the bottom of the falls which will be slightly slippery so don’t walk too fast. It barely qualifies as a hike so don’t be scared of taking that trail. You can see the falls from the parking lot too, but where’s the fun in that? Once you make your way down, you’ll be within the splash zone of the falls so prepare to wipe your glasses or camera lenses as needed.
The waterfall itself is pretty thin and not as grand as some of the other falls on this highway like Multnomah but it’s still a nice sight.
There is also another trail which leads to a higher point, but if you’re short on time, don’t want to make that hike, and want to hit up multiple waterfalls, you should be fine just checking out the lower falls with its short trail.

If you don’t wanna hike to the very top, the lower falls and base of the falls are incredibly beautiful and an easy walk.

Amazing and powerful waterfall that simply takes your breath away. So worth a stop if you are in the vicinity.

This was the first stop after vista house for us.
The Historic Columbia River Highway passes nearby, and at certain locations the Lower falls are visible from the road. Near the base of the falls, a parking lot and path were erected to assist visitors to the site.
Visitors must hike along the 2.1-mile (3.4 km) loop trail to see the upper falls.
Yea we didn’t hike all the way up the loop, we just got to a great view of the lower falls though.
Its awesome how nature can amaze us with the simplest things.

Our dear friends had one crazy day planned for us! All in one day, we were going to see the following attractions: Vista House at Crown, Latourell Falls, Multnomah Falls, Horsetail Falls, Bonneville Dam Fish Hatchery, and McMenamins Edgefield. It was a crazy itinerary and nothing was going to stop us! This was stop number two, after Vista House.
We just about succeeded with a 100%, except we had to cut it a bit short at Latourell Falls, and we were never able to get close up to it by hiking the trail to its base. Nevertheless we did stop and were able to snap a few lovely photos from the trail head. There is no doubt that Latourell Falls is majestic and beautiful. Even from a distance, it was stunning and enchanting. Hopefully one day, I can return and spend more time here!

Worth a stop, loved the beauty of the lush greenery and the unique geology surrounding the falls, this reminded us of hikes we’ve done in Hawaii. Take the short walk on the paved trail and view the fall up close.

Quick and easy hike. Options to hike up to the top or down to the bottom. Great family hike. Safe trails with a bathroom near the parking lot.

Coming from the Portland side to the land of waterfalls this is the first major one you’ll see. It doesn’t disappoint! You can see the waterfall with just a short walk up a hill. It’s the perfect view too! You can see the waterfall head on with a green backsplash too.
If you wanted to, you can continue up the hike to the top of the waterfall. It’s also a short hike, maybe ½ to ¾ of a mile. There’s a midway point with a bench where you can relax and get another gorgeous view of the mountain and the waterfall.
The hiking trail is pretty easy as most of it is paved or well cleared. Slight inclines make it just a little bit tough.
For a quick stop and photo op, this is a must!

Quick and easy hike with awesome waterfalls!
You don’t even need to hike to see the big Lower Falls! Just walk down the stairs to the right of the parking lot and there you go.
If you want to see Upper Falls, walk up the stairs to the left of the information board and follow the trail. It’s an easy climb up, not difficult at all for those who are a bit out of shape. It’s about 1 mile up to the waterfall. If you want to do the whole loop, I believe it’s another 1.3 miles to get back to the parking lot. Otherwise, I would just go back down the way you came.

The hike up to this waterfall is an easy one for those in O-​K shape! I don’t work out often or do any cardio and this hike, which was about 2.4 miles round trip, was pleasant; just the right amount for me. I tend to get bored on hikes after a while. It took my friend and I 40 minutes and we stopped quite a few times to take some pictures of the falls and different views.
I enjoyed this hike, it is more of a «do it once» kind of hike. I like to check out hiking spots to bring my dog to; I wouldn’t bring my guy here just because of how narrow the paths can be. On a Tuesday, there was a decent amount of people near the falls but as you hiked upwards, the company disappeared completely and it was quite tranquil!

A paradise in the Columbia River gorge waiting for me to fall in love with it and a falling in love I did!
With its untamed trail and luscious foilage brings out the natural beauty of this place.
Pictures and videos will not do this waterfall justice. It’s one of the most beautiful place I have ever been to. And it will be a must do and see again on my next visit to Portland.

A very easy hike! A seasoned hiker might feel underwhelmed by the lack of effort that is needed to hike to the waterfall, but it really is beautiful when you get to the falls. You can actually walk up to it (but be cautious because the rocks can be quite slippery). I took my cousins here when they visited from Colorado. They were amazed at how green everything is in the Pacific Northwest and seemed to enjoy the waterfall a lot. So of course we took them to Multnomah Falls too. I think Latourell Falls is a great place to take guests if you don’t want to go through the hassle of pushing past people at Multnomah
