I was in Portland for a little vacation and knew I had to eat at the food carts. Before flying back home, the husband and I were perusing the food cart pod on Washington and came across Mac & Trees. The guy working here was super friendly and offered us a sample while we were walking by. It was really yummy. Their cheese sauce is nice and cheesy. They use a tube pasta instead of the traditional elbow macaroni. We got the kid’s mac and cheese for $ 4. It was a pretty good portion for the cost. Brought it on the plane and ate it cold and it was still good! That says a lot for the quality and flavor!

Just stop and eat here! It’s delish. I had the Mac and trees, smaller portion, and couldn’t finish it all on an empty stomach. Oh my it was so good! Rich, creamy saucy thick noodles cooked to perfection, chunks of tender chicken throughout, a light dusting of toasted breadcrumbs, and melted cheesy top. What’s not to love. Served with a friendly smile. Yum!

Had the home style Mac and cheese. Huge portion and very generous with the bacon And bread crumb topping. Food is high quality and super nice owner. Highly recommend this Place.

Travelled to Portland this past weekend and had the«Blue Cheese Please»…best Mac & cheese I’ve ever had, hands down!!! And trust me, I’ve had A Lot of Mac & cheese from a lot of different places. Pasta is cooked to perfection and loaded with gooey melt cheese. I would definitely recommend this place as a must try! :)

I’ve walked past this place a few times and thought nothing of it, but I’m so glad I tried it! I love the noodles they use for their mac. I got the homestyle which had crispy bacon pieces and tomato and breadcrumbs, it was delicious! Nom nomz! The guy was super nice there too! Recommend this place to all that love mac and cheese!!! They serve regular or a large portion, for $ 8/$ 11. Not too bad, it’s pretty filling as well!

Yum! Some of the best Mac n cheese I’ve ever had. I was craving something warm and comforting and sometimes there’s nothing better than classic Mac n cheese. I did not try the other flavors on the menu but I stand by the old stand by. Price was great too! I will certainly go back and try the signature Mac n Trees.

Unexpectedly delicious. I am not a fan of the gross throw-everything-in-mac-n-cheese trend, nor is mac something I eat regularly because calories. This was amazing, more like a pasta with an amazing sauce than a casserole style, dense, heavy mac. If that’s what comes to mind when your hear m&c you may be disappointed — this isn’t a side dish, it’s the main event. My SO& I split a large of the namesake for $ 11, killed in it a fit of hunger(hence no pics… promise it happened), and were suuuper satisfied. Personally, I would’ve liked hella more broccoli because broccoli, but I get that maybe people expect a lot of pasta and so I’m thinking the ratio was a deliberate decision. Would 100% go back next time I’m in PDX. And if you’re in PDX, go there!

One evening a long time ago I wondered what I would do if I had a food cart, and decided I would either go with mac and cheese, or baked potatoes. Well, I ended up working in IT instead. Thankfully, my bet that someone else would pursue my food passion paid off. The hard part was catching this place when it happened to be open and I was on lunch break. I first saw this place around August, and every time I was at the pods I’d check if this place was open. Lo and behold, it’s open today! I ended up ordering ‘The Forest Park’ and dug in. It advertised a mac and cheese with grilled squash, braised mushrooms and roasted garlic. All three were found in abundance, and the way they balanced with the cheeses made for a very thoughtfully prepared meal. The noodles were perfectly cooked, the cheese blend was complex and rich, and the texture of the béchamel was spot on. I could tell the individual ingredients were handled and cooked right; I could even see grillmarks on the zucchini and taste the delicate nuttiness that only a grilled summer squash can provide. That said, I must complain about the seasoning. I’m a supertaster, and I can tell a lot of thought was put into the ingredients choice, but I must complain all the same. This is the same complaint I have of most ‘okay’ comfort food. Use more salt and pepper. Season it. That’s all it needs to be perfect. You wont be the final health straw that breaks my back — I promise. I don’t order comfort food because I’m wanting to make conscientious dieting choices, and more seasoning would elevate this from ‘okay’ to ‘astounding’ and allow those complex flavor layers to really shine. Don’t make me open a better mac and cheese cart.

I really wanted to adore and love this place. I have been eyeing it for months thinking, «What magical cheese drenched noodles must come from there.» Finally, the timing was right for me to stop by. I ordered the Mac and Trees(how could I not) and thought it was okay. Not the best and not the worst. Mac and Trees contains chicken and broccoli(the trees, duh!). The chicken was pretty flavorless, broccoli was broccoli, and the cheese part was pretty good. They also seemed nice. I may give it another try with something other than Mac and Trees.

Yum! This cute little food cart caught my eye, so I went over to check out the menu. I had already eaten lunch, and wasn’t planning on getting anything. The guy offered us a free sample, which my husband and I shared on our way to a nearby shop. We promptly went back to get 2 large orders to take home for dinner. The basic Mac(the free sample) was Mac and cheese perfection. For dinner, I got the blue cheese plate. My husband got the Mac and trees. So delicious. Perfectly cooked pasta. Sauce the perfect consistency of creamy to coat all of the noodles. And the dude cooking it up was really nice! It took about ~5 minutes to assemble our order. Well worth the wait!

The Mac and cheese is ok, the sauce is a little watery and could be creamier. My main issue was with the bacon because it was soft and chewy, like mostly big chunks of un-rendered fat.

The toppings were the best part. The portion sizes were ok. The noodles were too squishy. The cheese sauce, a bechamelish yellow sauce was pretty thin and a little bland. I never loved it, and by the end of my box I was a little tired of it. I feel like if I would have gotten this at a restaurant I would have been happy, but, at a cart that only serves mac and cheese, you expect great mac and cheese. This was only good. I think this is a fairly new cart, and hopefully will get better over time. A thicker more flavorful cheese sauce, a bit fresher noodles and maybe a half piece of garlic toast would easily push this review up a star. It would also be interesting to add beef as an option to the menu, hamburger heaven?

This is located in the food cart pod closest to my office, so I’m a frequent visitor to the area. I only noticed this location last month, and immediately decided to give it a home in my rotation. The idea is a bit better than the execution. The cheese and pasta were tasty, but the tomatoes chunks were huge and not well integrated. The sauce portion was a little overdone… But the bacon bits were just right. Not too hard, not too soft. Nice and chewy. And I might have added a vegetable for a little extra bunch. Zucchini maybe? There is an option to create your own dish — so I’d probably visit at least one more time to do so. It’s also one of those locations that seems best suited to a particular season — like fall/winter. It was a bit heavy for a summer lunch. I ate it all of course — the small was the perfect size for a cheese and carb loaded meal.

The Mac & Tree is a food cart located in Portland off of 9th and Washington that specializes in mac & cheese. I had the #7 Blue Cheese Please; blue cheese with spinach, bacon, balsamic drizzle of some sort, and bread crumbs mixed into a tubular pasta(I don’t know the specific name of the pasta). It was great! The pasta was perfectly cooked, the sauce was creamy; more spinach and bacon would have been nice; but their lack did not diminish my enjoyment of the dish. They produced my order in a reasonable amount of time, not lightning fast but adequate. It’s a food cart, so there is no seating, and minimal staff. Good eats. I will be back.
