When it became apparent that «Mad Men» was a runaway hit several networks jumped on board with their own period pieces based in the 1960’s. It was quickly obvious that it takes more than a kitsch wardrobe and art direction to have a hit.
When it comes to Portland barbershops Manly & Sons is «Mad Men». Like a Phoenix rising from the debacle that was Modern Man the guys packed up and marched down the street in support of former colleague, Tony Pin, and took up shop.
The result is a stripped down atmosphere with plenty of old school vibe. No over the top, Disneyland interpretation of a hipster mancave here. Just down to earth guys giving good haircuts. Might I also add a fine selection of hair jellys whether your a Dapper Dan man or Fop.

Not sure what the story is but a lot of the barbers from the modern man are working here now. I had Randall cut my hair and my hair came out great. He makes sure to stop and clarify everything you want so he can get the cut just right. He also does all the little things right, such as being cautious about hair getting on your clothing or on your face.
doesnt hurt that you get free beer or whiskey while you wait too.
I always leave feeling like I look way better!

Manly & Son’s is a great shop. It has a chill vibe and all the barbers are super friendly dudes. I have been going to Randel Blaschke for a few years and I would never let any one else touch my hair! He’s a super nice guy who does meticulous cuts and always keeps my hair interesting.
I’m a masculine of center queer female. Randel and this shop is queer-​friendly. They are always respectful to me. These dudes are great!

As a past frequent patron of a certain «Modern» Barber Shop down the street, I have found a new home. Mike Templeton gave me the best cut I have had in a very long time! The staff are all awesome guys and every haircut that I saw was spot on when they were finished. The price is more than reasonable for how high quality their cuts are. They also have a wide selection of Pomades, combs, straight edges and other grooming essentials. I think another reviewer put it perfectly when they said the vibe is masculine but not testosterone. I live in Lake Oswego and the drive over is worth it for Manly & Sons. Non-​pretentious (unlike The Modern Man), chill dudes will killer skills and better bourbon! I will never go to another shop again in Portland and will be coming back to Mike again! ¹⁰⁄₁₀

Not only did we receive great haircuts from friendly barbers, but also rekindled my 15 year old sons love of reading!

These guys impressively got this shop started quickly when the Modern Man had some business ethics issues come up. The atmosphere is more rugged (love it), they still serve drinks with a haircut (a luxury I didn’t get in Minneapolis, where I lived prior), and these guys just plain do great cuts. My barber, Mike Templeton, has done the best work on my hair to date, and women love it. I highly recommend him, as well as the other barbers just by watching them work. This place is pure Portland style.

If your wondering where all the best barbers from The Modern Man went, you’ve found the right place. Bill Collins is my go-​to, but all of the barbers at Manly and Sons are among the best in the city. Nowhere in PDX compares

Manly & Sons is a terrific shop run by terrific people. I’m thrilled that these boys stuck together and opened their own place. Great talent, gone through some filters, now concentrated in one location. (Well two actually). Bill Collins has been my sole barber for two years. The first time I went in with no idea what I wanted for my long, messy hair after months traveling, he basically helped me craft the perfect cut. Now, I just walk in and tell him that I want the usual and I’ve never once been disappointed. Bill is a skilled barber and now a friend. He is even going to help me find a good barber after I move to New Orleans in a few weeks. Five stars, absolutely. I’d give more if I could.

Manly and sons is my favorite shop in town, everyone there is top notch. When I went there they had complimentary bullet rye whisky and bullet bourbon as well has some beer from basecamp brewing. I will be going there from now on for sure.

Manly & Sons is a new addition to the Hawthorne strip, a classic den of bartenders for men, in the simplest sense. There’s a little backstory to this place, so I’ll share it. Manly & Sons was first opened in LA by a guy who used to cut hair at in Portland. Recently, the Modern Man (a mere few blocks away) imploded. Rumors of mismanagement, bounced paychecks, etc. So the best barbers from the Man struck out to set up shop in this new Portland outpost of the LA original. And I followed.
Sure I often get my hair cut by Vinnie down at Vinnie’s in the Ford, but sometimes I spread my business around, and Eric Katzenbach, who I originally discovered at MM, is my other #1 choice for cuts in this town. He’s a whiz with the clippers and puts a lot of care into his craft. He’s also a nice, low-​key dude who’s super easy to get along with. Someone I don’t mind having a straight razor close to my spinal cord. In short, I trust his hands.
So I followed Eric over here to Manly & Sons. M&S ditches the kitsch that was abundant at Modern Man, and keeps the best things. The shop is stocked with excellent barbers and they sell quality hair and shaving products (as well as some ties, socks, and other men’s furnishings). You can drink whiskey or beer while getting your cut. The décor is simple and straightforward. It’s a place where dudes can stop in and get groomed.
I’ll definitely be back. These guys give great cuts.

Decided to switch from Modern Man to Manly & Sons because my barber, Jeramie, went there. He does a great job and the whole place is comfortable and welcoming.
I generally get a buzz cut and a beard trim. But, I’ve seen guys with a lot more hair than me walking outta there looking all money! You wanna look spiffy… go to Manly & Sons on SE Hawthorne.

Mike Templeton recently moved here from another barber shop. He is has been our barber since we first moved to Portland a year and a half ago. I typically get the full Haircut, Beard Trim and Lineup. I love the shop and the vibe of all the employees from the greeter to all of the barbers.

We followed Mike Templeton here when he changed shops. He’s the only person who has ever cut my son’s hair the way he asks for/​wants.
We like this shop a lot!

Today I took my first trip into Manly & Sons to see Mike Templeton (consummate professional)! I couldn’t have been happier with the new shop. Very honest, man focused décor and vibe. Keep up the great work and I will continue to recommend your shop to all my friends.

I find the vibe here masculine but not testosterone. All the barbers are genuine, friendly and have a great rapport with one another. I like the throwback to a mans man barbershop that’s, just the right amount of manly without it being hyper masculine. There’s no posing at Manly & Sons it’s the shit!
As far as the hair cut and beard trim goes, all the compliments I receive speak for itself. I’ve never felt more welcomed or comfortable in a barber shop. For the skill of all the barbers I find the price appropriate.
I love love love the products they use from the pomades to the aftershave and beard oil. Prices of the products are also a good deal and they offer other men’s items as well.
Another review spoke of all of the pin ups. First, five pin ups are not enough to get worked up about especially when one is the iconic Betty Page. Second, it’s fricken Portland where a majority of the women emulate Betty Page and those wonderful beauties of the Pin Up Era. Lighten up people. I say go somewhere else if you want a cookie cutter über PC barbershop then go to great clips. The guys are not just barbers they are image makers and they help you creat the persona you want to be. Cudo’s to Manly & Sons for being a barber shop where every guy gay or straight can feel good about being a man!

I followed Mike Tempelton from the «other place» and couldn’t be happier. He’s a true professional giving a great cut. Being a bald guy I’m picky how the hairline and bald area looks. He does it perfectly every time. When you find a barber ya like stay there.
The shop is a place for men. Looks like a mans place and has that classic «barber sol» aroma. Go there! Relax and feel good about being a man.

Jeff gave me a dope fade. Also when he asked what I was doing that evening I said making dinner, and he asked what. I said I didn’t know. Jeff said I should make ceviche and drink beer, so I did, and it was great.

This is not an easy review to write, I’ve been a regular customer of my barber Randall for more than a year, at his old shop (which shall remain nameless) — he does a great job, and continues to offer a great haircut…
However my overall review is tainted because of the experience at the new establishment, I feel it is not appealing at all to me or my family. The décor is mostly spotted with pin-​up girls and the only magazines to read are adult nude magazines. It’s not the upclass feel that I expected and made it really uncomfortable for a family man. I was downright embarrassed that my wife and son came with me to wait (as she often does). She mentioned to the front desk staff some her feedback about how she felt about the table full of playboys mags and the response was very dismissive of her feelings rather than appreciating all customer feedback.
I would suggest a more rounded approach in the assumption of men’s interest — Can you offer a wider variety of décor and reading material? Sports, Music, Fishing, Travel, Money, Philosophy, Politics, Clothing Style, Fitness, Camping, Survival, Martial Arts, Guns, Food, Video Games (how about a game system?)
Unfortunately, I plan find a new barbershop that provides a better overall experience and am sorry to lose my regular barber unless Manly and Sons Barber makes a bold change to the customer experience.

I got my first haircut at Manly and Sons this week, and it won’t be my last! I booked my appointment online for the services I wanted (cut, beard trim, beard line-​up, and straight-​razor shave). I exactly got the appointment time I wanted, just after work. Street parking was really easy. I showed up, and Mike T. took great care of me!
The shop itself is new to Portland, but the barbers aren’t. Some of PDX’s best barbers work here, and it shows — bad hair walks in, great haircuts walk out! The place has a real barbershop vibe; these guys are The Real Deal. This is just like the place my dad took me when I was a little kid.
Service is great, location is great, parking is great, prices are great, people are great. This is genuinely a five-​star place, which is why I’m giving it a five-​star review.
