Awesome little square with the monument smack dab in the middle. Lots of great places to eat along the square. On Wednesdays there is a GREAT farmers market! Had an awesome time there today and got some tasty treats to hold me over until next week!

History lessons with Steffasaurus: Monument Square is a giant monument of a heroic woman yielding a sword wrapped in a flag in one hand, a shield and branch of leaves in the other, and it commemorates those who fought in the Civil War. The monument reads: «Portland/To her sons who died/for the union.» It was dedicated on October 28th, 1891; it became part of the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. And I think Our Lady of Victories is absolutely beautiful. (I love me some girl power!) Monument Square is more than just a statue, though — it’s a town square of sorts that becomes the temporary home to loads of different, wonderful Portland-y things like the Wednesday Farmers’ Market, Alive at 5 Concert Series, our annual Christmas Tree, Dark Follies performances during First Friday Art Walk, the International Pillow Fight Day in April, Parking Space Day in September, protests of all kinds, parts of the Old Port Festival, and excellent people watching just to name a few. It’s an integral part of Portland and one that always reminds me of what a gorgeous, vibrant, cultural, welcoming city we have.
