Mt Scott Fuel Company

Firewood I picked up was supposed to be dry. That is definitely not the case. Just sits in my fireplace sizzling & smoking. Looks like I’m not the only one with this problem, from other reviews.

The company has great product, I’ll give it that. Nothing I’ve purchased has been poor, but the attitude of the employees stinks. I live close by, but I don’t like having to deal with crappy behavior, and piss-​poor customer service. I will find another place to go that has friendlier folks to do business.

I’ve purchased gravel, rock, mulch and flagstones from these guys. The prices are affordable plus it’s close to home. Our yard probably wouldn’t look as nice if it weren’t for these guys.

I am so worn out by the idea of spending my money with a company which always makes you feel as they are doing YOU a favor by taking your money. Customer service over the phone is lackluster, verging on outright rude. Delivery times are rarely within the window given. When I ask for a call before delivery, it never happens. I suppose when you call, they have no idea if you are spending $ 30 or $ 300 with them. But shouldn’t they treat every customer as important? I will take my business elsewhere.

RUDE! YOU PEOPLE ARE RUDE. Called for a quote today, my first time trying to order and the woman on the phone was rude. She spoke to me like I was an idiot because I didn’t know how much i needed. I am ordering from Dean’s Innovations because not only were they nicer they were cheaper!

Great prices, close to home and speedy service. Knowledgeable staff and friendly. Been going here for years and will continue to do so.

I have gotten pea gravel, bark chips and firewood from these guys for years. Today though they really stepped it up; my dog ran out through an open gate, they found her and tracked her back to me. not only are they a good business to deal with, they are good people too.

Got some wood — and just like many are saying it’s WET. Why would we want to spend money on wet wood??? Seriously annoyed. What a waste.

I have used Mt. Scott for business before, with good results, but my most recent experience with them was truly lacking. I ordered soil and pea gravel to be delivered to my home on Monday. Come Monday evening, no delivery. We had been waiting for them all day, with the intention of quickly shoveling & wheelbarrow-​ing the soil/​gravel out of our driveway and into the intended backyard locations. We knew that even if they delivered first thing on Tuesday morning, we would not have any more time to spend on this project, as we were preparing to leave town the very next day. I called them at 8 am on Tuesday and asked to cancel the order. Their response? «We delivered it yesterday». Well, no, clearly that can’t be the case. I asked for my money back and they did indeed refund us, but in no way offered any kind of apology for the inconvenience. All they could say was how strange it was that we didn’t have it because they 100% delivered it to our address.
So, thinking that was that, I went about my busy day only to get a knock on my door that evening. A woman from 6 houses down had our soil & gravel in her driveway, and wanted it gone. Immediately. ASAP. She is in the process of selling her house and did not want/​need/​have patience for huge piles of rock & dirt. Well of course we panicked. The product no did not belong to us, and we certainly were not capable of taking wheelbarrow loads of rocks & soils back & forth all night, so I called Mt. Scott and told them «hey, I found your soil & pea gravel, it’s down the street from us at this address, please collect it as soon as possible as the homeowner wants it gone right now». The gentleman was, well, very rude to me about this. He clearly did not want to go pick it up, and he said «well, your neighbor can just keep it», and of course, I had to reiterate how much the neighbor most certainly did NOT want it. Eventually (after plenty of hhmming and hawwwing he said «well, I guess I can get some guys to go shovel it up». Again, not even the pretense of an apology for the kerfluffle that they caused, or an acknowledgement that there was an inconvenience.
I understand that mistakes happen, but when a company messes up, I do expect a certain amount of a «make it right» attitude, which we didn’t get any of from Mt. Scott. Instead we got rude attitudes and a sense that WE were an inconvenience to THEM.
I don’t think we’ll be using Mt. Scott again, for business or for our residence.

These guys were the most reasonably priced to have 7.4 cubic yards of mulch delivered to my house. The delivery guy was right on time at 8am. My yard looks amazing now!

The office made an error on our delivery time and made an erroneous statement that we called and switched our order to will call. When I spoke to the office to refute their statement they argued with me. While they agreed to make the delivery within a few hours, I still lost time and had people working on the project standing around. To top it off, the delivery driver from Mt. Scott Fuel had a bad attitude and didn’t possess any customer service skills. He was perceived by us as a jerk and that’s the polite description. I wish the driver didn’t take the office screw up out on the customer. However he may always behave that way. I may be taking our business to McFarlanes.

I’ve gotten bark, rocks and stones there and have always had great service. Cheep prices and a large selection.

I use Mt Scott for bark and soil purchases and have been very pleased with there service. They have been informative and helpful. we don’t live in a perfect world.

Ordered 5 yards of gravel, got a pile approximately 2 – 3 yards in size. Measured pile that was delivered, measurements come out to 2.5 yards. Called Mt. Scott to complain, they told me I’m full of it. Most definitely won’t be going back!

I got a ½ yard of the 4-​way mix… very clean and carefully loaded into my little pick-​up. I appreciate the long history of this local business and will continue to use for all my rock/​soil/​bark needs. I would not hesitate to try delivery if I needed that amount. Mt. Scott rocks.

I’ve gotten a few things at Mt. Scott: topsoil, sand, rock. They have a very good selection, and I have found the quality to be very good as well. Prices are pretty good, at least for pickup, I don’t know about their delivery rates. The last time we picked up topsoil the loader gave us at least as much as we ordered, I don’t think there is any danger of them shorting you, they seem pretty fair. Mt. Scott is the only place I go for soil, rock, etc. Convenient, fair, quality. Nice to have them right in town.

Truthfully, my yard would be nothing but mud and weeds without Mt. Scott fuel company — because there’s no way I am going to lug 4 to 6 bags of bark at a time from Lowe’s in my car.
This place sells by the truck load so I borrow my dad’s truck and pay $ 35 for an entire yard full in one shot.
Okay, not really. I have my dad bring me a yard full in his truck. I just help scoop it out with buckets and spread it in my yard.
This is a no-​frills business. You park, pay, pick out your barkdust, get back in your truck, pull forward and a forklift dumps a yard of bark dust in your truck bed.
They do have different varieties of bark dust as well as a ton of different kinds of rock (ie river rock to red rock) for yard enhancement. I’d prefer to lay down bark than continually mow a yard, so having this business a mile down the road is a total gold mine!

Used these guys to have 5 yards of soil delivered. Price was great for 3-​way topsoil and the delivery was a mere $ 5! Our neighbor wanted in on ½ a yard and they delivered a small portion onto her driveway and dumped the rest on our property, so props to them for accommodating. So far we’re pretty satisfied with the soil quality. We’ll see what happens in the springtime!
We were also interested in using these guys for firewood but their options are minimal… meaning they only have fir available. I think the wood has been seasoned for 2 years whereas the place we ended up ordering from offers mixed wood and it’s seasoned from 3 – 5 years.
The lady that answers the phone is neither outwardly friendly or rude… just kind of meh about customer service. This place does the job and we’ll probably order soil from them again but I wouldn’t say they are exceptional by any means.

This is a six-​year-​old review, but stick around, please, because it’s very relevant. Why, you ask, is it relevant all these years later? Well, because it is a review of garden soil, and we all know that gardening is a sloooooooow process. The results can take years.
So, here we go.
Six years ago, we bought a house and wanted to put in huge new garden beds because the house came with… none. Well, one, that was something like six feet square, and was all the way at the end of the backyard, sitting there in a tiny, huddled heap. It was a pathetic bed. Really, it was.
So we laid out our new beds (cheater’s hint: use flour to draw a line on the grass, so that you can see what the bed will look like before you make it). And we called Mt. Scott Fuel to order our garden soil, on the advice of our neighbors, who liked them.
We ordered something like 7 yards of 4-​way blend soil, which is a lot, especially when dumped at the base of one’s driveway. Furious wheelbarrowing ensued. And soon we had glorious glorious beds.
Then we ordered something like 5 yards of Medium Dark Fir mulch. Unlike hardware store mulch, this mulch stuck around for years and years. Even the mulch that we had piled for safekeeping into a pile called Mount Mulch was still good, years later when we needed it. We were really impressed. You will be, too.
We were even more impressed with the 4-​way blend soil. Everything planted in it grew to ridiculous heights. Everything that wasn’t… struggled. It was extremely obvious that 4-​way blend was a fantastic product. Even now, years later, the plants that are lucky enough to live in the Mount Scott soil look better than their native soil brethren.

We needed some planting mix after constructing our raised bed last spring and Mt. Scott Fuel was an easy choice since it’s about 5 minutes from the house. My experience was a little different than the other reviewers since we borrowed my Father-in-Law’s truck and picked up a yard of 4-​way soil.
Basically, they have a loader/​backhoe buzzing around their lot, moving between the piles of different materials and loading trucks. They point you to your pile and tell you where to park. You sit there for a minute or two and then, suddenly, the truck jolts and the bed sinks down a bit… and you’re ready to go.
The prices weren’t as low as some of the stuff you see on Craigslist, but they were reasonable (currently $ 35/​yard picked up or $ 90/​yard delivered). We were happy the quality of the mix… and so was our garden this summer. Not to mention the fact that we have enough left over to overhaul a few beds this summer.
