New Seasons Market

A couple months back NS changed their bacon. No longer do they have the pepper bacon which is a bummer but whatever new bacon they got tastes like a rotting fish. Has for months. It’s gross. Go back to the good good.

This is not the star of the new seasons chain. This store is cramped and has little selection of vegan foods when compared to other stores in this chain. Cashiers are intolerable. Strange attitudes and terrible at bagging. Cashier just smashed $ 12 dollars worth of macaroons. I’ve also had them toss raw seafood on top of fresh salad greens. It’s always something weird. I only go to this location when I’m in a pinch. I hope the new one on Lombard is better when it opens.

I want very much to love New Seasons, truly I do. But it’s time to shift the focus away from investor demands and back to serving a great product to the community that supports it. The central kitchen has pretty much devastated the quality of the prepared foods. Every single time I go in, I’m optimistic that the prepared foods will be good. Sadly, since they have been coming out of the central kitchen, I have yet to taste anything that is as good as it used to be when it was made on site. The remodel of the store pulled one entire aisle and introduced a wide array of pre-​packaged convenience foods, because $$. I’m so not ready to see such a tiny store dedicate this much space to «grab-​and-​go». Please, guys: just ask your shoppers to offer honest input and listen. Adding 1 – 2 stores a year to satisfy the demands of Endeavour Capital, where the main objective is forced growth to meet shareholder demands, just doesn’t seem like a great way to be «local». Hiring Wendy Collie (from Starbucks) as CEO the new San Jose CA location just sort of confirm my worst fears: New Seasons has officially sold out.

I really want to give a five star for New Seasons, because I usually have an overall good experience, but not today. Sometimes, I get those employees that don’t fit the motto for the store. Not very friendly or customer oriented, if you know what I mean?
I do want to make clear that I am always pleased with the management. Charlotte, I think her name is, she is always officiant when helping us. There are plenty of others who always bring a good vibe, as well.
Today, however I was very disappointed with the mistreatment of an employee who works in the merchandise department. I don’t want to give her my energy, but honestly, I think she should be called out. It was one of those power struggles that she was having with me, although I wasn’t playing that game.
My children and husband were playing in the toy and card isle. I was shopping while my guy and kids were distracting themselves. As soon as I was ready to leave, I noticed an employee communicating with my kids. From the expression on her face, she looked irritable and annoyed with my children. She said something to my children and I couldn’t hear her clearly, so I walked up to her and asked, «Is it okay if they play with these cars? Is that alright?» She reacted with passive aggression. She ignored me! She used body language that intended to give me the run around. I had to follow her into the next isle with my husband behind me to witness. She still was ignoring me. I repeated myself several times with an «excuse me…» I was determined to get her full attention after that blunt move of hers. She didn’t respond to me until she was near another coworker of hers. When she responded it was passive aggressive with a deer in headlights aggressive stare. She then lied to me, because her co-​worker could over hear us. She told me that she responded to me in the first place, which was clearly BS. I don’t think customers should be treated this poorly? I thought I was being polite by asking if it is okay if my children play with the toys?
I spoke with a manger about this, and hopefully this person is talked to about this matter (I doubt), and straightens up her bad attitude.
Why work in the «friendliest store in town» if you aren’t at all friendly, or respectful. She needs a training in communication of some sort. She clearly needed a smoke break of some kind. I am considering reporting this bad attitude with a letter of complaint. Come on, New Seasons. I love you guys, but check your employees. Not cool at all.

This review is for the customer service I received at the end of my trip:
I was alone with my 2yr old. I purchased definitely 2 bags worth of groceries but my entire purchase was shoved into only one bag and then the container of spinach I bought couldn’t fit was just out in my cart… Additionally, the bag was so heavy that even though it was double bagged the handles broke!
Really??? Clearly this cashier and bagger have no clue as to be courteous and helpful to a parent… Here’s a tip, 2yr olds need their hands held while waking from cars to the house which means parents only have one hand.

Hipster employees are so much better than the patrons. They are more interested in doing their work that gets them out the door as oppose to helping their customers. Order a sandwich around 3 – 330 and watch the hilarity ensue.

Stopped by here for a meal from the deli. A wide variety of items available and they all look tasty. As for the store itself, I didn’t look too much at it. A wide variety of items available and based on reputation, maybe a bit pricey.

No longer the friendliest store in town. Just an over-​priced one with ho-​hum service; obvious changes under investor ownership.
I did the right thing by saving my Dr. Bronner’s half gallon jug to refill at New Seasons. I filled it about ¾ of the way and ended up getting charged more than if I had just bought a bottle of the next size down — mostly because the clerk didn’t want to weigh the jug and scolded /​punished me with her own estimate for not weighing ahead of time. She simply estimated how much the jug weighed and coded it in, I asked her how much she thought it weighed and she pretty much blew me off. $ 6 more than the next size up — not enough to take it back and complain, but enough to change my opinion as a New Seasons shopper and not go back for the reason I originally started going: friendly service. Also a bag of groceries put me back $ 100.
So. Over. It.

I would sacrifice my first born son to have a New Seasons Market in Phoenix, I’d donate a kidney, I’d give up video games for 10 years, I’d swear to do 100 pushups daily, for the rest of my life, and I would walk 500 miles and I would walk 500 more just to be the man who walked a 1000 miles to fall down at a New Seasons Market’s door. These grocers are the obvious alternative to Whole Foods hegemony. From their vast selection of specialty items that you’d be hard pressed to find elsewhere to the lovely foodstuffs they make daily or at your behest, New Seasons make grocery stores into a place to be.

I used to hate grocery shopping. I would eat every last thing in the house before I went shopping. Grocery stores are busy and loud and I would have to go up and down so many aisles trying to find organic mixed in with the other stuff. The last straw was when I was in the «meatless» cold shelf at Fred Meyer and there was bacon in between the Field Roast and Tofurky. Real, actual pig corpse next to my food. I asked a manager WHY!!! He said it was «organic» pig corpse. I had to explain to him what meatless meant and how horrifying it was for a vegan to see that. He didn’t get it. Not even close.
Then I found New Seasons. A huge selection of organic produce that is very fresh and keeps for a long time (unlike TJs). A true meatless section very far away from the animal graveyard section. Both Veganaise (several varieties) and Just Mayo, right next to each other. Several vegan cheeses. You don’t have to search for organic cereal or pasta. It is there. The cleaning supplies, bags and wraps and paper products are mostly natural, non-​toxic, recycled. A great selection of toothpaste and face moisturizer. Every variety of Dr Bronner’s, including their coconut oil! They do have some of the Johnson and Johnson and Kellogg’s stuff, but you have to look for it. And the coffee section!
Of course New Season’s seems more expensive than Safeway, but this is because most of the products are organic, non-​GMO, no animal testing, non toxic and small brands. These are worth paying more for.
I have been to several of their stores and each varies just a bit to suit the neighborhood. The Sellwood store even has a dog parking area in the shade with partitions and water bowls!
Of course no one is perfect. I would like to see a few more vegan items in their deli/​café. But that is about it.
I like New Seasons so much, that when I decided to buy a house, I asked my agent to look for something within a mile of New Seasons. He found me one and now this location is my one and only grocery store.

Boy has this location slipped. Blame it on the rapid, rabid, rampant gentrification of the area but you can’t shop here anymore without at least 3 privileged, rude, oblivious people asserting their entitlement. The new layout is weird. It feels like a Whole Foods which takes out all ingenuity and uniqueness from the store. The seafood section smells rotten. Top that off with rude employees, bike thieves and clueless managers and you’ll wonder why you’re spending your money there. It’s so much healthier, mentally and physically, to hit up your local farmers market.
Now that a big wig there has donated to Jeb Bush, I can, safely, say I will never spend money in that store again. BOOOOOO.

Consistent on all of its locations, with a wider range of foods and friendly staff than many others — my bf and I even managed to do some Christmas shopping here (dog toy for niece’s dog — shaped like a reindeer — and a tiny music box which played one of my sister’s and her husband’s favorite songs). GREAT deli department service, SAMPLES of blood oranges, and oddball stuff rarely found elsewhere.

This location is pretty nice but can be a little crowded. The employees are super friendly and the selection is good.

I really hope I never have to go back here again. It had been a while, maybe a year, and suddenly the bread is in two places (on opposite sides of the store too), the sliced deli meats counter selection only has like salami and turkey (no chicken or HAM!?), and when I finally determined they did not have much of what I was looking for, the express checkout was somehow even more confusing than the free for all it used to be.
They really push their own baked breads, which would be fine if they kept it in stock and had someone at the bakery counter offering to slice it for me. Minus two points! I ended up getting Grand Central because I like their sliced como bread for sandwiches. Fine, but I was taken aback when it ended up being priced higher than Sheridan’s grocery — a much more local and smaller store. You live and learn and pay 30% more than you should.
In addition, the checkout clerk was too saucy for me. I had been at work all day, so I really did not have the energy to listen to a clerk tell me how to tell him how to bag my groceries. Yes, you heard me right. He gave me attitude because my boyfriend and I wanted to share groceries but I didn’t tell him soon enough. That is stupid.
This store keeps increasing their calendar, random-​ass sock, and tea cup/​porcelain selection, so if you know a disorganized yuppie with cold feet or empty cupboards then go to New Seasons. I really like the other location on N Williams, but this particular store misses the mark when it comes to layout, customer service, prices… umm okay just about everything.

This place is great! I would do all of my grocery shopping here if the prices were a bit lower. So until I become wealthy I will continue to get just a few items here and there.
The staff here has always been incredibly nice and helpful when I want information or recommendations. I frequently visit New Seasons for their selection of cheeses, olives, and fresh bread.
The cheese section is probably my favorite part of the store and the people working behind the counter are awesome! I love being able to describe the types of flavors I enjoy and then getting several recommendations that fit the bill.
When I pick out cheese I have to bring home olives as well. The selection at this New Seasons is pretty decent. I wish they had a few more selections, but the ones they do have are always solid. I tried some chili flaked olives yesterday that were amazing.
The only downfall to this location is the parking situation. Luckily I live close enough to walk here on a nice enough day. On the days I do have my car I always park on a side street in the neighborhood.

My favorite New Seasons Market. Super nice and helpful staff in every department and the remodel looks great! Nice to see that they changed the parking to slanted for those who drive.
Most cashiers are awesome — however, there are one or two longtime cashiers who don’t feel like they need to greet shoppers in their line, so I just avoid them.
Also, the bike parking was shuffled off to the back of the property instead of being up front, which was a really bad move and even if unintentional, it makes us feel like we aren’t as important as those who drive cars. Why not do better bike parking along the side like they do at the Williams location? Kind of lame to go through the front checkout then have to go all the way around to get to my bike with my bags. Please fix this, NSM!

I want to love this location, I really do — we just moved to the neighborhood and love it & have really enjoyed shopping at different New Seasons around Portland, but this location? EVERY SINGLE TIME we shop here the person we interact with at check out is a totally condescending snotbag. What the fuck, people?! it makes our entire shopping experience awkward, and sometimes totally suck. We’ll stick with Green Zebra & Fred Meyer from now on, you guys BLOW.

This is a nice bew seasons. Like all their stores, the employees are helpful and friendly. The meat and produce departments are exxellent here. They make great sandwiches and sometimes the hot food selection is good.

It’s not a mecca of a supermarket, but for what it is, New Seasons is a good place. The produce is 2 steps above Zupans. As far as variety goes, each item (e.g. tomatoes or eggplants) has more diverse options, and is more pristine, than you’ll find at Fred Meyers or The Barn. But you pay for it. Prices are very high, way too high. If there was any real competition in town, maybe that would change. But it doesn’t make sense to spend 4x as much on a tomatillo.
The dairy selection is pretty good as well — lots of Portland dairy farm products. They also have mini individual cheeses, which is my preferred size, although the selection of these is better at Zupans.
I was also impressed with the veggie frozen meal section. Everything is more expensive that it is than at other places, but the selection is much deeper than at Fred Meyer.
For me this is the kind of place to do my dinner party shopping, but unless my trust fund kicks in, I can’t shop here regularly.

Every time I stop here for something real quick, I find myself mindlessly wandering the aisles in search of I don’t know what. And I always leave with things I didn’t intend to get on my way in. But high quality stuff and on the healthier side, so that’s a-​okay with me. The deli is solid, though after trying out the New Seasons on Williams, I’m really envying their setup a lot more.
My other critique I have to say is the coffee bar here. They never seem to really have a designated person handling coffee orders so it almost feels like an inconvenience to the deli staff trying to order coffee from them. Not only that but getting a drink here is so. slow. So I don’t get my coffee here and I only stop in when I have plenty of time, seems like a solution to me!
