Oriental Food Value

If there is an asian grocery store that has better service than OFV, I have not shopped there. I have shopped in hundreds of asian markets and this place is at the top in terms of service. If you are new to asian cooking and shopping for ingredients, I would go here first. The cash register ladies will help you find the stuff you need, but you have to ask them to help you. It will save you hours of wandering aimlessly up and down the isles with no idea what you are looking for. They speak English fluently, and don’t pretend that they don’t. So annoying when people do that. The down side is that this is a medium sized store and has limits on how much stuff they can stock. Things I buy here are ramen noodles, assorted vegetables and herbs, rice, and sauces. Oh and as far as the smell, it smells like an asian market should. Some asian ingredients have odors which are different than what is sold at Safeway. The odors that you should worry about is a fishy smell or rotten food smell.
Tip: it’s next to Big 5’s.

This family run grocery is the place to shop if you want great service from genuinely friendly people. There is a wide selection of Asian foods priced well and competitive with surrounding grocers. Give this place a shot and wander around you’ll find what you need.

Just moved to Portland, and had gone to numerous oriental markets around town (including Fubonn), and by far this is the best spot. While they might have less frozen goods compared to Fubonn, the staff here is awesome, and they have a very good selection (including produce and meats) of just about everything you’d be after. Highly recommended!

We love this place. We are regulars here. The vegetables are ALWAYS fresh. Fresh lotus root, taro root, lemon grass, bean sprouts, galanga, shitake mushrooms, oyster mushrooms, Yummy stuff. Variety of groceries and nice kitchen supply choices as well… and the staff there especially cashiers are always welcoming and nice. They always give u some kind of a little treat to take home with u :)
I guess the only down side is that it smells funky. But it doesn’t mean its dirty. I’ve even used their restroom there before and it is VERY clean.
Highly recommended. Price is good, service is good, choices are good too :)

It is an Asian grocery store that smells like an Asian grocery store. Not necessarily a bad thing. Makes me feel at home! The price of most things are comparable to places like fubonn or pacific market. What I like most is that coming here as a child, my mom always used to drop tons of cash at this place. The nice Chinese lady (who has worked there for as long as I can remember) used to give us goodies like the occasional bag of candy or soda when we accompanied our mom. We don’t go here very often anymore, as we live in Vancouver and it is more convenient just to go to the Asian store that has opened up near us in the past year or so, but this store is great! Good customer service for sure.

This is a great neighborhood oriental food market that has anything and everything that you could ever need. We come here for really great prices on coconut milk and cream and Asian sauces like sweet chili, teriyaki, soy, rice wine vinegar, sesame oil and hoisin. We like the fresh produce and the prices. This is a great stop for rice paper wraps, dried mushrooms and currys. The fresh yakisoba noodles in the refrigerated area are the best we’ve ever had when we’re in the mood for stir fry and want a change from rice. The cashiers are always friendly helpful and quick in there blue gloves. They also have a very large selection of kitchen and cooking utensils, pots, burners, mortar and pestle, plates, dishes, bowls, strainers, steamers…
More often than not we see just as many Caucasians shopping as we do Asians so obviously this is a destination place for everyone who enjoys to cook Asian cuisine and get supplies.

My mom has been going here for years. There is one extremely sweet lady that works there and she helps check us out every time. All these years we have been going, we look forward to seeing her friendly face. She always gives us the best prices and is so friendly. I used to go to Fubon sometimes to get my Asian groceries, but it’s always crowded in there, smells a bit funky and the service I get there is terrible. The cashier is always grumpy and throwing my groceries and has no emotions or a bone of friendliness in them. They could learn from the sweet lady at Oriental Food Value. I hope that this little mom and pop store thrives or makes more money so they could maybe do a remodel or update a little bit. They deserve business here. I’ll keep coming here as long as the friendly lady is still working there!

This store is fantastic because of the super friendly and helpful staff. Every time we go in they have the store looking nicer. If you have a problem with a product they will work something out for you not send you away with an excuse about a poor return policy.

I’m hard pressed to think of anywhere else I’ve had better customer service. Extremely helpful staff. Hard for me to comment much on selection, just haven’t visited too many stores in the area. Have felt a little lost trying to find a few things in here, but have had no problem getting help.
Cheap fresh herbs is my main win for this place. Went to 3 different stores trying to find fresh mint for mojitos and Oriental Food Value came through for me. The cashier, of her own volition, sold it to me for 50 cents because she didn’t think it was fresh enough. Won me over as a customer.

I prefer this store to Fubonn! The meat and seafood section seems cleaner, the employees are always very friendly and its less crowded. It might not be huge and might not have as much stuff, but most of the time, they have what I need.

It’s just not Fubon. Let’s face it. There’s potential there, but why not just drive a couple blocks up for a place that carries a wider selection?
Not only that, this place is HARD TO FIND. You really have to strain your neck to figure out where this place is, not to mention do a couple U-​turns because it’s hidden in the back of a lot. Not worth it.

I walk through Oriental Food Value real quick today and I liked it. More than half the items I bought were cheaper than Fubonn.

I love this place! You can get half (or whole) roast duck, along with all the ingredients you need to make a banh mi or salad rolls at home. Staff is friendly and helpful and they always give away some little free thing they want you to try.
Really good value for the price; and you don’t have to fight crowds of people. They’re a great fit for the perfectly multicultural Lents neighborhood, too.

This place seems pretty alright. It’s definitely a bit of a relic… the building, that is. You can tell that whatever was here before, the Oriental Market just moved in, neon ‘Video Library’ signs and all. The space reminds me of the department store from Gremlins for some reason. But filled with Asian groceries.
I came in looking for some fresh local kimchi (based on other reviews) but the shelf labeled for it was completely empty. It looked like there were some decent offerings in the coolers and freezers and dry goods sections other than what I was looking for, but I was on a fairly singular mission.
That said, I do want to come back with more time to browse through this place to see if they have anything different from the Fubonn mega-​mart up the street. Until then… A-​OK

Great place to buy food, there so much they know my whole family. Great people at the register vary welcoming and social incredibly nice. Their helping u make sure u can find everything really easy.

Oriental Food Value used to be A-​OK when they were the closest and pretty much only game in the ‘hood. But, now that I can get fresh noodles a block away and go to Fubonn for everything else I want and more, and it’s also fresher — the Food Value has become a store of last resort.
Things that make me sad: the months old piles of An Xuyen bread and pastries by the front counter, the anemic selection of ramen, the general disorganization of the store, the FISH on the PA, the curt cashier lady, the desert like parking lot, the fountains that they never turn on.
Things that are okay about this place: the meat counter, the cool herbalist, the kimchi, and it’s close to my house.

It may look dingy since it’s in an old building, but don’t let that deter you! The people who work here are friendly, helpful, and they have an awesome selection of stuff. Their prices on must have bottled sauces (oyster, soy, hoisin, hot chili, Sriracha, etc) are all very good. You’ll pay twice the amount for the same bottle of Sriracha at the regular grocery stores. I’ve shopped at other markets, but this place has been my favorite for 10 years.

It would be pretty difficult to try and avoid sounding like a total white girl, so I’m just gonna lay it all out there: I don’t know what half of the stuff is that isn’t labeled in English, but everything I’ve had is awesome AND cheap.
They have a great selection of all the basics: noodles, rice, tea, weird random sodas, pickled veggies including super yummy kimchi, and a pretty amazing looking seafood selection that is super fresh (smell the freshness!) I also go here for roasted seaweed (way cheaper than anywhere else) and rice seasonings.
But the best part of the whole experience is the service. Every single time I visit, the cashier is friendly in the most GENUINE way. The last time I went, the cashier told my roomie and I hilarious stories about these «crazy Caucasian ladies» and was so taken with us, she gave us both free teas that she’s been into lately.
For a small, local feel with great service giving you tons of food for super cheap, I’m giving this place a super white-​person high-​5.
