This is a small subterranean bookstore specializing in poetry and art books. Also included are other humanities. The books are either extremely obscure, as is the case with the poetry books, or rare, as are many of the art books. The owner is a poet, writer, and is well connected in Portland’s creative community. He has personally selected all the books, an impossibility for a block-size bookstore. The tiny shop is packed to the ceiling with books, one of a kind artist books, large format art books and monographs. For instance, there was a probably 100 year old folio of drawings from the famous architects McKim Mead and White, something you aren’t going to find elsewhere. The shop is open by appointment only for now. Most of its business is done over the interwebs due to the extreme specialization of the collection. The owner is working on a new website. So far just a few items are listed online on Abe Books. Passages is situated in the Falcon Art Community building. The basement of this large old apartment structure is given over to a tightly curated set of artist studios. It truly is a community and the bookshop fits right in. The hallways are painted in dark hues, and filled with large ornately framed portraits in oil, very Grimm set decorator style. The building entrance is locked, so to visit the store, contact them in advance. Passages is a small specialized bookstore with items you will not find elsewhere. It’s the quintessential bookstore of more than a century ago, filled with rare and obscure books. And like the bookstores of yore, the owner can probably tell you about every book in the store!
