A seismograph is not something the average person has in their basement, but PSU does. It’s said you don’t need a weatherman to see which way the wind is blowing; if it’s the «big one», you probably don’t need a seismograph to tell you the ground is shaking.
(Actually there is a distributed seismograph project where they do bolt one to your basement floor and it communicates over your Internet connection to gather fine-​grained data. It’s the USGS NetQuakes GeoSIG project —
)
The PSU online seismograph is perfect to determine if you dreamed an earthquake, or it really happened while you were dreaming. Plus you can send the link to your mom to reassure family that living on the fault line is fine.
The seismograph is archived, but the most useful link is the last 6 hours chart. In fact, it should be bookmarked given our perch on the ring of fire, and we’re not talking Thai food! (The free Firefox plug in eQuake Alert is another reminder that earthquakes are commonplace worldwide)
And it is free on the web. Also includes earthquake maps and useful links. They would get more stars if the archives went back further and links worked. Don’t they have grad students for that?
