R Squared Construction

I was going to send this in a private email to Morgan and Stephanie, but the address i have for them no longer works, and i can’t seem to track down their website. I also see no reviews after may of last year, so perhaps they’re no longer in business here.
Either way, for background, i had R2 on site doing a minor bathroom remodel (turning a small bathroom and a big closet into a big bathroom and a small closet) when we discovered the shower was leaking into the frame of the house. Some sleuthing (with a hammer) turned up the fact that the shower was built very poorly, and would have to be rebuilt from scratch.
They sent out an employee who admitted she’d never built a shower before, which struck me as odd, especially since no one was directly supervising her. The resulting shower was quite, well, unaesthetic, with uneven tiles and sunken accent sections. But at least it didn’t leak!
…oh wait.
A year or so later, it started leaking again — into the frame of the house, draining out through a light fixture in the basement. When R2 couldn’t even manage to get an email back to me within a week, i hired someone else.
What they found was quite frustrating. The inexperienced employee had installed the shower pan incorrectly, causing two major problems.
1) The shower pan flexed when stepped on, eventually pulling away from the walls and allowing leakage since there was no membrane in place either.
2) Since they’d used a threaded drain pipe instead of a welded one, the flexion of the shower pan eventually stripped the pipe, and water could escape there too.
I just spent thousands of dollars having a different company re-​do the work i paid R2 thousands of dollars to do in the first place.
Morgan and Stephanie are lovely people, and the work they did personally on our house was very good. However, my checking account, and the places in the bathroom where the wall has separated from the ceiling, are both unpleasant reminders that their underlings were not so skilled.

I’ve been meaning to write this review since December. I live in San Francisco and purchased a rental in Portland that needed to be completely redone. I reached out to 4 contractors with good reviews on Unilocal for quotes. Stephanie and Morgan were the last that I met with and by far the most thorough and professional. Although not the cheapest, their quote was the most complete and well thought out and their pricing was far from the highest quote I received. When I asked Stephanie about over runs, I was a little skeptical when she told me that she quotes high and that they usually come in under budget. In the end they were dead on with their quote even though more work was required than initially expected and I ended up opting for more expensive counter tops.
Their work was well done, but more importantly Stephanie did an awesome job of managing the project. This was particularly reassuring as I was not local. Stephanie had great leads for materials and great suggestions for finishing touches.
As is to be expected, not everything was perfect, but Stephanie was quick to address anything that needed to be tended to after completion.
I know I will be using R2 again and I would highly recommend them for any job.

I contacted Morgan and Steph about some damaged sheathing from Carpenter Ants. They came by my house tonight and looked at the damage and were able to tell us how we could easily fix the issue ourselves! They were very kind and helpful especially considering they gave out the advice free of charge. I would definitely contact them for any work i’ll need done in the future!

Stephanie and Morgan are great. I had a few things around the house I wanted checked out. They spent an hour or more with me, went over exactly what needs to be done and how — then told me to save my money by getting a handy man to do it. I wanted to pay them for their time and all the great instruction but they said no — write us a Unilocal review. And how. When I do need contractors there’s no question about who.

I contacted Morgan and Steph about our kitchen remodel after reading all of the positive reviews here on Unilocal,and I am so glad I did! I’ve worked for contractors and I know how hard it is to find good ones – and they’re the good ones!
Morgan, Steph and their whole team were fantastic start to finish. Great communication, they were here when they said they would be, they were flexible with our schedule, and they happily took care of all of the random little things we could throw at them. All that and very affordable too!
We are so happy with our new kitchen. They’ll be our first call for any home repairs from now on!

The best part is that you get a male and female team!
You have to admit-​each gender has their specialty.
They are both really good at everything-​and they communicate well with each other and the client.
They have done at least 3 big jobs for us by now-​and w/​our whacky
house-​there are always surprises-​which they dealt with-​until the job was
done perfectly. Thats why I keep going back to them.
They are also cool and funny– which is important, too.

R Squared makes it possible to LOVE contractors. They are realiable, responsive, reasonable and blow the others totally out of the water. I own a very old farmhouse that is now a rental property and feel so relieved to have them at my side be it routine maintenance or the occasional emergency situation.

Stephanie and Morgan at R Squared are the best contractors I’ve ever worked with. Period. R Squared is responsive, attentive, thorough, and have never gone over budget from a quote. They’re like the contractor version of a jackalope or chupacabra… very rarely seen in the wild.
When I moved my business to Portland I needed help with the build out of my new space. I retained another contractor for the service who was like a cartoon caricature of negative contractor stereotypes: late in responding to calls emails, continually revising the quote, and doing mediocre work. I fired him and R Squared helped me finish the work with the best GC experience of my life. Literally the opposite of the other guy. Since then they’ve done everything from electrical, to roofing, to insulation and masonry on our home and have always done excellent work on-​time and on-​budget. Plus they’re nice folks and always explain the entirety of the situation so you have a firm grasp on what’s being done and why. They’ve taught me so much.
I don’t want to put too fine a point on it, but you aren’t going to find a better contractor than R Squared.

Without R2, my husband and I would’ve been totally screwed. Thank the stars we got possibly the most useful recommendation we’ve ever got: go with them!
As a husband and wife team, Steph and Morgan are timely, reliable, skilled and affordable. They’ve completed numerous projects on our 100-​year-​old home. From the first project on, we’ve always been impressed with their timely, do-​it-​right-​the-​first-​time, professional work.
Trust me, we’ve employeed the stereotypical slacker, overpriced, shoody work contractors in the past. Never again! I give a 100% stellar recommendation for R2. They actually give you money back when a project comes in under cost and they don’t charge you when they go over bid so, unlike other contractors, you fully know what to expect for the costs of your project. And, they do excellent work and don’t cut corners. (Morgan is a former fireman.)
We called Steph and Morgan on numerous occasions: when the basement flooded, when we put in double pained windows, when we wanted to reinforce our foundation… The ongoing projects for an old house are endless. Each time I was extremely impressed with R2’s expertise and work. They are simultaneously knowledgeable and hilarious which make them a pleasure to be around. Soon, we plan to turn our basement into an in-​law unit. I’ll be giving R2 a call to do the entire project. As far as contractors go-​it doesn’t get any better than R2.
You ROCK R2-​our home would be in shambles without you!

I have had my windows replaced and hardwood floors installed by R2. They did an outstanding job even though my older house was challenging. Excellent high quality work at a fair price!

R2 is the greatest! My partner and I needed some work done before we moved into our new house. R2 were experts all around — prompt, efficient and knowledgeable. They know their stuff, explain it well and are easy to communicate with. They handle serious house work with aplomb and when it comes time to prepare for the zombie apocalypse, there isn’t anybody else I would trust.
