Safeway

2^nd time shopping here, seems to be a nice neighborhood supermarket in the Pearl District. Very clean and orderly. The selves are well stocked. The staff is friendly. Sign up for the Safeway member card to receive discounts on many of your purchases. My husband picked up some baked chicken pieces on his last trip in and just loved it. I would definitely recommend this store as your go to neighborhood supermarket.

Pharmacy lady super rude about getting my prescription by even the next day, and it was time sensitive, needed the next morning. Even after I gave her my number which they had anyways in there system they did not call to tell me ready, so yea time sensitive didn’t matter to them.

Clearly marked on the outside of the parking lot is «Public parking levels 4, 5, and 6.» NOT PUBIC PARKING ON LEVELS 4, 5, AND 6 IF YOU HAVE A PERMIT. I parked on level 4 and although I was ready to pay when leaving, there was no pay station and I had a $ 50 ticket because I did not have a permit. Deceitful much? I will never shop at a Safeway again in my life. Who is losing $ 50 now?

This store is nothing extraordinary. I shop here mainly because of its convenience to me.
This purpose of this review, however, is to highlight the spectacular service that is consistently provided to me by Rick Donaldson. He is perhaps this store’s greatest asset. Keep up the great work, Rick!

In recent months, I have taken to calling this location «Safeway minus». I call it this because it has about half of what an average Safeway has. Half the variety, half the bargains, half the employees, half the convenience. Oh… except prices. They have DOUBLE the prices.
Tonight was my absolute last straw with this place. Even though I live right down the street, and this is a far more convenient location for me to shop, I will not be doing any of my grocery purchasing here ever again.
Let’s start at the constant stream of vagrants harassing people at the entrance. Then let’s move on to the fact that there is absolutely no variety here. If you want dairy products, you better like Lucerne (which in my opinion is the WORST dairy producer available in the PNW. I mean, seriously?) I couldn’t buy any of the brands I usually buy because they sell out right away because no one wants to buy «Loser-​né». Which brings us to another issue… this store is RARELY well stocked. You’re lucky if it is even half stocked. Normally there is nothing on the shelves but the shitty brands everyone picks over. The deli and meat counters close up shop early (even before the listed times as noted on several occasions). Tonight, there were numerous «Buy one get one free» deals marked in the meat section which sounded great, until I looked at the unit price, and it was consistently twice that of what it normally is even at this location. So essentially, this was deceptive advertising and a scam. Then let’s talk about normal pricing. I take very careful stock of what I pay for things from location to location. This Safeway is consistently overcharging for items to the tune of 25% and thats just compared to other Safeways. FORGET about comparing it to competitors. Guarantee it’ll lose out by 40%.
If you can manage to navigate your way through the massive number of compromises you will undoubtedly make in deciding on your purchases, you are met with a front checkout that seems to never have more than two clerks checking at any one time, despite having roughly ten registers. If you can manage to wait in line for one of their DELIGHTFULLY CHIPPER (sarcasm) clerks, they will be sure to pack your bags in a way that is guaranteed to throw out your back (just like what happened to me when trying to carry home two blocks their terribly unbalanced packing job several weeks ago. My back is STILL injured from that master stroke by no doubt a champion of tetris). Don’t worry, if you’d prefer to pack your own bags, you can wait in line to use one of their self checkout machines which may or may not be functioning properly. Just be sure that you aren’t planning on buying a number of groceries that occupy more than the cubic space of a scottish terrier because you won’t be able to fit them all on the finicky pressure sensors. HOPEFULLY then, you can manage to get everything scanned in. As long as you don’t have to rely on the notoriously buggy touch screens.
So in short… don’t shop here unless you are a masochist or have absolutely no other option, and even then… think long and hard. They lost my business permanently and I will discourage others in the neighborhood from shopping there. After all, it’s what a good neighbor does. Good luck «Safeway minus» shoppers.

Geez, this place needs to be painted in fresh, bright colors. And some of their employees could use a better attitude towards helping customers, too.
After reading online that they sell guns at other Kroger/​Fred Meyer stores, I decided to take my business elsewhere. After checking out my alternatives, Safeway seemed a good choice as far as easy parking, similar pricing and (hopefully) similar availability of products.
Parking is a breeze (and free! for one hour) at the entrance on NW 14^th Avenue and the (old and stained) elevator takes you right down to the main floor of the store, to the produce department.
Pricing is similar, if not cheaper, than other major grocery chains. That was a plus.
The fish department had a nice selection of shrimp, clams, cod, rock fish, etc. and I ended up spoiling myself with a lobster tail (on sale) for Labor Day weekend. The guy behind the counter, though, could use a class in how to communicate in a more kinder fashion.
Then onto my search for regular staple items. I needed cat food (Purina packets to be specific) – not available – my poor cats, they are going to have to try Friskies. The next item, dry dog food (Rachel Ray’s), only available in a small bag, so I am trying Smart One for Gnof, my dog. Kitty litter: yay! They had Arm&Hammer, on sale, so I got lucky there.
But I don’t think I will return…

This Safeway is much nicer then other Safeway’s in the area. The crowd is Pearl, lots of pretty people and better dressed then Jefferson. The selection is good and fresh and prices the same as all the Safeway. Staff is efficient, usually attractive and sometimes freindly. Parking around here is often rough. To bad they don’t have parking in the basement like the Jefferson Safeway!

The store is one of the smallest Safeway stores I have seen. Despite its size, the store have a pretty good selection of the items I usually purchase. I have yet to need help finding anything, but during the times I have shopped there seems to be an adequate number of employees that I shouldn’t have an issue finding one to help.

All you really need to know about this Safeway is that at their deli counter they used to have a sign that if they can’t make your sandwich in 3 minutes or less it’s free. They never made the time window so they fixed the problem… By taking down the sign. I went in today and was second in line. To their credit they finally had two employees back there. I left after over 10 minutes without being helped or greeted.
They do have some nice employees and they seem like they’re trying, which is what is saving it from one star.

When this Safeway first opened a few years ago, it was a disaster. Now, though, with apparent input from the neighborhood, the quality and diversity of offerings has improved, the staff is friendly and the prices are reasonable.
Later today, when I go out to buy food for a small dinner tonight, I’ll go to Safeway whereas in previous times, I’d head straight for Whole Foods.

PROS
The people who work here are awesome!
The prices are reasonable (great deals can be had with a club card & app).
U-​Scan is quick and easy.
Good place to shop for staples like wine, dog food, toilet paper, etc.
Pharmacy is quick and efficient.
The store is always clean.
Free parking.
CONS
Produce is questionable.
Bottle return has really hurt the neighborhood.
The seafood section is not the best.
There are rarely enough checkers.
Not a decent grocery cart in the place.

First of all, this SAFEWAY is located on «Thirteenth Street» — which SERIOUSLY put something ‘evil’ into their entire operation. I’ve been followed through the store by very strange people (i.e. those involved with Devil Worship). I’m not kidding here.
The young homeless people BEGGING at the front doors are ANNOYING — as are the strange people who wander around the store. It LOOKS «yuppie» on the outside, but inside it’s CLEARLY ANOTHER STORY. The supervisors are slow, and the employees are not all that happy to be working there.
I just don’t care for this one — it’s FRED MEYER FOR ME. And the few homeless people who do go into Fred Meyer do NOT bother me or anyone else. Here, THEY DO !
Stick with FRED MEYER FOR BETTER SELECTIONS AND PRICES !
And people !

This place is s close to my house so I come here a lot and would give five stars but their baggers seriously make me sad for the human race. I have to re-​bag my groceries every time I leave or else everything would be crushed as well as they’re so wasteful giving you far more bags then necessary. what’s the point of paying these people if they cannot even complete the most remedial of tasks properly?

What a nightmare. I attempted to wait in the bathroom line twice before giving up. Possibly an entrance to Narnia or a speakeasy, I’ll never know.
The cashier (not in training) was disastrous in ringing up our few, and very uncomplicated, items. And the supervisor wasn’t any better in the personality department. I like to think I have a moderate amount of patience but I left mumbling obscenities + having flashbacks of watching Boiling Points. Ridiculous.

It seems as if this location intentionally hires incompetent cashiers to force their customers to use the self check out. Fuck this place!!! Again fuck this place. They are soooooo slow intentionally. Absent minded and rude. I live in the neighborhood and would rather go to Fred Meyer on burnside or in NE

Portland’s #1 spot to watch people steal food from the hot bar and then fall asleep in the dining area! $ 3 breakfast burrito? Yep, but you gotta track down an employee from the floor to make it for you first! Good luck!
Come on Safeway… get it together!

I love this Safeway. It has some of the best and friendliest staff around.
Something needs to be done about the hobos outside though. The one old guy that’s missing a leg and just shouts at every single person that passes by «Hey MISTER!!!» MA’AAAM!!!”. That’s gotta stop man.

Still operating $ 5 Fridays and there are a few deals to be had, but at the same time, a dozen of large eggs will set you back about $ 2.50 vs. under $ 2 at Fred Meyer or Trader Joe’s. This store isn’t as backed up when I’ve been here shopping recently.
It remains to be seen what will happen once «Albertsons LLC» takes over Safeway.

Terrible!
I had to wait a long time, even though there was only one person in front of me in line.
After a 5 minute wait while they rummaged around on various shelves, they told me to come back on Monday (it was a Friday).
That afternoon, they called me and told me my order would be ready Monday.
Then the same person called again an hour later, and told me again that my order would be ready on Monday.
Monday afternoon I got an automatic call saying my order was ready.
But when I went in — IT WAS STILL NOT READY. I told them that I was told three times it would be ready and they were not apologetic about it at all.
When I went back on Tuesday, again I had to wait a long time while they rummaged around. Then they charged me a $ 30 copay, but my copay is half of that and they wouldn’t believe me.
Every single interaction and every part of my experience with them was LOUSY. I will not go there again.
