I had a solid breakfast here. The chicken fried steak was good and crispy and the gravy was good. The potatoes were ok – would’ve been better if they were crispier. The waitress was awesome. She was personable and efficient. She elevated the place from 3 stars to 4.

A true gem in the rough. Great food and big portions at a reasonable price. I recommend the fish tacos!

I am a regular at Sams. Usually llike the place. Food is good and the ice tea is great,. The waitress keeps the glass full. Today I mentioned to the owner they needed window dovering in this heat and the a/c should be turned up higher, He got mad accused me of complaining all the time. .Anyway he told me and my 65 year old mother to leave. He had her in tears. I support local places but not now. I have sent many people his way but no more.

I got their Mixed Plate #4: teriyaki chicken and kalua pig with two scoops of rice and mac salad. It cost $ 8.45, with an additional 50-cent to-go fee(so it was $ 8.95 total). I liked the mac salad. It had that authentic Island taste to it, with what appeared to be paprika sprinkled over the top. Nice red color to contrast with the otherwise-white mac salad. I would have liked a bit of black pepper in the mac salad, but otherwise, a job well done. The rice was nicely cooked, and I liked the furikake sprinkled on top of each scoop. Definitely something many people in Hawaii like to do to their rice! Unfortunately, the meat left something to be desired. The teriyaki chicken and kalua pig were both dry and fell flat on flavor. In all fairness, I liked the bed of properly cooked shredded cabbage on the bottom. But overall, not worth the $ 8.95 I paid. For whatever reason, I didn’t feel too comfortable in this place. The café’s décor had a faded, dated color to it, and was not very inviting. The bar was OK, but felt slightly cramped. I’m not one to frequent many bars anyway, so I was probably just out of my element. Anyway, I’m unlikely to return to this place. The mac salad was decent, but I can definitely get better kalua pig and teriyaki chicken elsewhere.

This has to be one of my favorite places to eat around Rockwood. Amazing teriyaki, great fries, and good pulled pork. Waitress is super friendly, and really does a kick ass job considering she was running the entire restaurant. Nice diner vibe to the place. Food is reasonably priced, which is hard to say about a lot of places around here. Only reason I won’t give them 5 stars is that they’re only open until 3.

Friendly staff, amazing local food here on the mainland, and the best Hawaiian food I’ve had anywhere. Full menu at the bar, best late night food anywhere in Portland. Loved it. Will be coming back again and again.

Accidentally ran into this place while visiting Portland and what a pleasant surprise. Let me star by saying what a bunch of great guys! They make you feel at home and treat you like they’ve known you for years. The guys who run and own Sam’s are from Hawaii so the food they serve there is Hawaii style. The service was really friendly and Jason and Rusty really brought that Island warmth to this place. I would stop by any time I go back to Portland or if I was ever craving local Hawaii food. Thanks Guys!
