The Barefoot Sage

I have been here about 10 times and think its great! some times the massage can be hit or miss but for the most part is amazing. I have learned though that the massage and soak is the best option as I didn’t get as much out of the scrub and paraffin as I do when I am getting a pedi.
They have tea and cookies that you can order but it is a bit pricy. Im sure that you could bring your own drinks but I have personally not done so.
If you have tired feet this is a great way to start the weekend!

«I need to come here more often.» I say that every time I leave. I love being treated here with a companion — especially one that is ok with you zoning out while your feet and lower legs are either soaking in a rose petal bath or being massaged by one of their expert staff.
If you get there a little bit early, then you can browse in the gift shop area — lots of interesting, locally made items from soaps and lotions to accessories and dream catchers. When you go, remember to wear easy shoes for quick put on and take off and appropriate clothing to be able to expose your legs up to your knees. I forgot one time but was prepared to cut my pants off so I didn’t miss my appointment. Just kidding (sort of).

I have been coming to the Barefoot Sage for the last 3 years, and every visit has been above average.
I have taken several friends, even my mother, and it is a destination spot for us!
Although the treatments are not inexpensive, in my opinion, they are worth every cent.
I usually go for a higher price treatment, and each time I do, I’m never disappointed.
I had 2 out of town guests that I treated, and the whole experience lasted over 2 hours, and the three therapists not only treated us very well (skilled, charming, etc.), they worked well together!
The ambiance is very relaxing without being ‘over the top’, and although it’s located on busy Hawthorne, you can hardly hear any activity from the outside.
The therapists are interactive without being intrusive — they allowed us to chatter away, then ‘bliss out’ and relax, and were very attentive to our needs.
Despite other reviews, I have never experienced poor customer service or inconsistent billing processes. Every experience has been excellent, and when I call for an appointment and reach the answering service, I receive a call back within a short amount of time.
All in all, I will continue to frequent this business and recommend it to others, because I sincerely believe it employs individuals who are really invested in the service they give to customers, and it’s obvious that the owners take extreme pride in their business.
Also, they carry awesome little locally made gifts that are hard not to buy before you go!

My experience here was absolutely lovely. I left feeling so relaxed and rejuvenated. The massage therapists are very professional and friendly. Definitely worth the price. The atmosphere is very relaxing, with several elevated couches around the room to sit on while you get your treatments done. They give you warm neck wraps and soak your feet with water and yummy smelling aromatherapy mixes. They serve you tea, chocolate, and cookies while your feet soak and give you a fantastic foot massage after. And I just got the simple 45 minute soak and massage. There are longer and more extensive treatments available. Highly recommend.

I received a gift certificate for this place. The therapists mostly ignore you. You have to pay for super-​expensive tea or other beverages. It is very expensive for what the service is.

5 stars for the massage therapy, zero stars for the customer service and ambiance.
The warm neck pillow, cushy chairs and massage were all very relaxing. The massage therapist was skilled, had a calming presence and answered all my questions related to my treatment. She even reheated the neck pillow halfway through the treatment which was awesome.
Unfortunately, the place overall was not relaxing. The Barefoot Sage makes it clear on their website and at the facility that talking should be kept to a minimum. I was seated on a chair close to the reception desk and could hear every word of the conversation, phone calls and laughter of the man and woman at the desk. In hindsight, I should have asked to be moved however it died down some partway through and I thought the noise issue was gone only to return. A white noise machine around the desk would have helped as well as having just one person there, not two. What’s worse, after some of the phone calls, the two at the desk complained about the customer asking too many questions and laughed at what the customer was asking.
When I was finished with my service, I went up to the desk to pay and the man at the desk asked how everything was. I explained that the service was great but the noise around the desk was not relaxing. He seemed surprised and said, «No worries». Not the type of response I would expect from a place that states its a «getaway from the distractions and stresses from everyday life». He did eventually mumble an insincere sounding, «I’m sorry»
I won’t be returning to this place due to my experience and the response of the receptionist to my feedback. They do have great LMT’s though so if you decide to go, I recommend asking to be seated far away from the reception desk.

Wish I found this place after day one of my vacation in Portland. My feet and legs were sore from all the walking and hiking. The soak and massage was much needed. The atmosphere was relaxing. The hot flax pillow was a nice bonus. They were on top of keeping the water in my foot soak warm and my massage was lovely. Highly recommended!

Just got back from my first trip to The Barefoot Sage — and my feet and lower legs feel amazing! The whole experience is fantastic — the couches you sit on are extremely comfortable, the atmosphere of the place is serene, and the foot massage and soak is just perfect. While the prices are high, you definitely get what you pay for — it’s definitely worth it.
While I’d give the massage and soak 5 (or even 6) out of 5 stars, I have to take away at least one star due to the ‘business management’ side of things. We were charged the wrong price for our service (got mixed up with another couple who was there). After we left, the girl from the front desk called us to tell us she made a mistake and was wondering how we’d like to pay for the difference. She originally stated that it was a $ 13 difference — which made me wonder why she’d even bother. We weren’t far from the place, so we went back to clear things up (we could have just never gone back — which is what, I’m sure, most people would have done). So I handed her $ 13, and she said «ok, but then that doesn’t leave them any gratuity.» So, the actual difference was $ 38. So, basically, she was going to be willing to let the two masseuses get screwed out of a tip for her error had we not ended up clearing things up. We left our tip the same as before, which we had based on the price we were originally charged. We felt bad because it was a lower % of the price we should have been charged originally — but I was irked about the «$ 13… no $ 38… no $even more…»
I’ll definitely go back — but I’ll make sure I ensure with the cashier that everything is correct before leaving. It shouldn’t have been that difficult (especially for a service you’re paying for to help you relax!!!).

Absolute luv coming here! I really wish they had one here in SoCal. If I had the money to open one I would.
The staff here is very friendly and welcoming. The foot massage are freaking amazing. You get a nice warm heated neck wrap. If you go with a friend you can choose to soak your feet or massage first! Its hard to not stay awake, our massage therapist Lindsey was awesome.
If you are ever in Portland definitely you have got to make an appointment to get zonked out with a good rub down!

I was visiting Portland recently and read about The Barefoot Sage sometime ago and knew I had to make an appointment while I was in town.
I fell in love with the place as soon as I walked in. The décor is so inviting and relaxing. The staff are so friendly and accomodating, and made me feel right at home.
Lindsey was my Massage Therapist and she was awesome and such a sweet young lady. My legs and feet felt so light and less achy after my treatment with her. I was very calm and in a great mood afterwards.
Definitely a place to go to, and I will surely visit this place again.

I heard so many wonderful things about The Barefoot Sage and I finally got the opportunity in early August to try it out with some colleagues from out of town! The ambiance is spectacular as well as the foot soak and massage service. The only reason why its four stars is I wished I could’ve had my toe nails painted since my feet felt so good. :) I’ll probably just go to the nail salon up the street to do that. Otherwise It was FABULOUS! I can’t wait to go again!

I work eleven hour days and most of that time is spent standing. My feet ache at the end of the week and this was the first business that turned up when I did a search for «foot massage portland» or some combination there of. Though it was pricey, it was definitely worth it. The service was great, everyone there was incredibly friendly and every moment I was there was comfortable and relaxing.
The music is good too — I was half expecting to sit through an hour of some repetitive relaxation music CD, the same sitar or the same harp playing the whole way through. They made the effort to have different «kinds» of relaxing music playing the whole way through, more interesting and less irritating if you ask me.
I got the «happy feet package» and it was totally worth it. The massage was lovely and professional quality. The wax dip at the end was my favourite part. I had a green tea and a chocolate truffle with my service and it all tasted amazing.
It should be noted these folks aren’t here to paint nails or do beauty stuff (which makes me happy, personally, I’m not into all that!), but if you come in and ask them to paint their nails they can’t and won’t do because that’s not what they’re certified to do and that’s not really the goal of their service (i.e., beauty, this is not a beauty spa as much as it is a comfort/​relaxation spa).
Loved it, hope to save up and go again in a few months and be pampered once again.

I used to go to China a lot for business, so I got reflexology foot massages every other month for years. That’s not what this is, so go there for a pampering, not if your feet are really sore. This is the kind of place for a bridal shower, not serious reflexology foot massage.
And it wasn’t exactly a bargain either, so I go to Healthy Foot Reflexology on SE 82^nd and Harrison St (Suite 325) instead for their $ 20/​hour deal.

I have been here many times but just wanted to comment on my last visit in particular. I am a massage therapist also and my lfriend and I decided to go there to catch up and relax. We had a massage therapist who kept interrupting our conversation. I definitely didn’t want to treat the therapist like he is just there to work, but I also felt like I was catching up with my girlfriend AND him. It felt a little unprofessional to me. I appreciate small talk and being polite, but he would actually give his opinion on personal things I was sharing with my friend. It made me a little uncomfortable and when her and I were talking, we actually felt like we had to start including him in the conversation!
She was treating me and it was a few days before Christmas so I didn’t want to complain or get him in trouble and I tipped him well, being in the service industry myself but I also don’t think he realizes that he might be turning people off by how much he talks during a relaxing treatment.
Of course, this hasn’t happened before. Just an isolated case. My only other complaint is in the past when I would go in with someone, we would each get an LMT to work on us at the same time. The last few times I’ve gone, we share one therapist. I’m not sure if it was a timing thing or if this is their new policy, but it makes it hard to go with another person and just soak the entire time the other is getting their foot treatment.
Still 4 stars for the overall spa. I would go more often if I could afford it.

My wife and visited recently and had a wonderful time. We had the Sweet Feet treatment, which we upgraded to add the paraffin dip at the end. The entire experience, including the decadent chocolates, was superb!
Great place to take a friend or maybe we’ll take our entire office team next time.

I can’t review the services of Barefoot Sage since I never got a chance to try it out but this review is in response to their business practices. Four years ago a friend of mine bought me a gift certificate to the Barefoot Sage. The certificate has no expiration date and while I should have used it sooner, nervousness with people touching my feet, forgetfulness etc made it so four years after its purchase I had never used it. When I called to schedule an appointment I was informed that these certificates are no longer honored (ended in June of 2009).
I can’t say whether Barefoot Sage gives a good massage but I am wary of any business that would take money from someone and then not follow through on their promise of a service being offered. Especially, without informing the purchaser that there was an expiration date. Stand by your name and your business. In my eyes this was a poor business decision. I will never recommend this place to anyone and am unlikely to ever want to try to services.

Nice experience, lovely therapists, but $ 100+ for a foot massage is a bit high IMO.

Less than 3 weeks from my due date and my dogs are seriously aching, so I made an appointment at the Barefoot Sage ($ 50 Foot Bath and Restorative Massage package). I have knots on the bottoms of my feet, which are somewhat swollen, due to normal water retention and the increased summer temps, so I was in desperate need of therapy.
I had a wonderful 30-​minute soak in Lavender & Bergamot oil ($ 6 extra), followed by a lovely 30-​minute massage. Jean gently worked out most of my knots and my feet felt great when I left.
The only reason I can’t give this place 5 stars is for the heap of added expenses. They offer you refreshments, but every single thing costs extra, except water. Even tea is $ 3. Can’t a girl get a free cup of tea when she’s already paying $ 56 + 15−20% gratuity for a massage? I mean, come on, at least give me a free cup of tea.

I’m definitely a sucker for a pedicure … how much more pampered can you get really? Well … now I know that you CAN get that much more pampered … at the Barefoot Sage.
You sit on a cushy comfy couch and place your feet in lovely smelling water. Then you are treated to an amazing leg/​foot massage … forget about the polish — THIS is what it’s all about.
OH and they’ll bring you yummy tea and cookies …
and yes … I went there with Jackie … MWAH!
