I was wandering around the Portland Saturday Market and decided to waddle over to the Duck Store. Compared to its doppelgänger in Eugene, this Duck Store is just OK. Of course, I’m not an Alum and hence the yellow/green branded stuff doesn’t make me palpitate. On the other hand, the restored historic White Stag Building where it’s located(and home of UO Portland) is architecturally fabulous. I wandered around and was not only super impressed, but envious for what my friends within the greater Rose City were privileged to enjoy and learn.

The Duck Store to me is like Fry’s to my husband… the Visa gets damaged with every trip I make there. Anything and everything you could want that says«QUACK» including tailgating supplies, household items, accessories, etc. to show your Duck pride. Even date nights have been known to include a trip there!

Went last December and wasn’t as impressed as this December. Their selection seems to have diversified and grown. It has ALL things Ducks… anything and everything you would need as a Ducks fan. What made it not 5 stars? The staff. 3 very disinterested and younger staff members who were very happy doing their own thing, and not helping anyone in the store other than themselves(to laughter, etc.).

To give props to the often-prop-able Jen K, what the Duck, indeed. You get Ducked hard and Ducked good at the Duck Store. Chances are, if you live outside of the University of Oregon campus, you’ll make a stop at the Duck Store in Portland to appease your best-loved Duck fan, even if it’s yourself. This one has a lot of apparel in the expected green and gold hues as well as random crap. An inflatable UO sled? Why not? It pairs perfectly with your 20-ounce Ducks-logo blazoned beer stein. I’d say the selection is pretty healthy for its size, but some of the wares just don’t make a lot of sense. There’s a large section of one wall devoted to art supplies that consists mostly of Sharpie pens and paper products. But there was only one beer coozy in stock, and it was a dinky little number on a keychain. Priorities, people. On the other hand, the store serves coffee and espresso — it’ll come in handy on a cold day when you’re strolling through Old Town and find yourself in a head-to-head brawl with a pushy meth head. And while I am not a UO graduate myself, I love university-themed stores. Something about the unabashed pride in all the minutiae representing the school makes me smile, as does walking through clean, well-organized aisles. I’m such a dork for that sort of thing that, many moons ago, I purchased a lifelike replica of a banana slug from my own alma matter’s store to stick on my printer. The ability to find real, breathing banana slugs in the woods outside my dorm room didn’t deter me from my devotion to kitsch. For that, I have to appreciate the Duck Store. Incidentally, at least you could see ducks of the quacking variety in and around Eugene. I actually never once witnessed a real banana slug when I lived in Santa Cruz, CA. And I was full of chemicals at least half of that time, so you think I would’ve seen them everywhere.

What the Duck? When you have two kids whose Christmas wish lists are filled with Duck items, it means at a certain point you will be all Ducked out. In the past week alone, I made unsuccessful trips to purchase certain items at the Clackamas Town Center and Washington Square Mall locations. I figured surely what I need would be at the main location downtown. Denied! At this point I may just have to start ordering online. This location is by far the best outside of Eugene. Four times as large as the two mall locations above and it has a much larger selection of non-apparel merchandise. Even though I didn’t get exactly what I was looking for, I managed to do very well in the stocking stuffer department. The staff was a bit frazzled, but then it is kind of a lousy time of year to work in retail so I feel their pain. Still I am struck by the fact that they didn’t have certain(obvious) items in stock. It is not like the national championship and growing fan insanity came as a surprise. Nike and the Ducks are leaving money on the table. And my pocketbook thanks you.

During college football season, I BLEED green & gold! So on our Thanksgiving trip to Oregon, I really needed my Duck store«fix.» We went on Black Friday just a little before closing and missed the crowds. This store has EVERYTHING Ducks. In anticipation of clinching the national championship –YES, 37 – 20 yesterday– I really needed a new sweatshirt and I wasn’t disappointed. The quality of everything in the store is top-notch and I appreciate the promise of all proceeds going back into programs in support of UO faculty, staff & students. With my sweatshirt I was also given a UO notepad and Ducks paper statue(for my desk) for free with purchase. The whole store is clean, well-lighted and well-stocked. Store employees(whom I assume are students) are always helpful and attentive. People smile more in Oregon, why is that? I love the downtown location too. Great place to shop!

God Bless a Shot in the Dark. (I’m of course referring to the *highly* caffeinated jolt-ya-awake beverage you can get at the coffee bar here, but I suppose we could wax philosophical with that statement too.) Either way, consider this a sign to take one.
