The Holy Donut

as much as I wanted to avoid eating bad in Portland, Holy Donut was well worth the visit and there was always a line until they donuts were sold out. Our first attempt to get one was ruined by the woman in front of us who back the last 10 donuts (I thought about offering twice the price for one), but we came back the next day and got two donuts. The unique thing and secret why these donuts are so good is the mashed potatoes mixed into the donut batter — it provides good texture and it’s a more dense, unique taste. So good and worth the indulgence!

The sweet potato donut was the most soft, moist, delicious thing I’ve had in a while. Such an interesting twist! I also had a pomegranate donut (super yummy) and my friend had a chai. The staff was hilarious and friendly as well! Go early though, they’re only open until they sell out.

There’s always time for a holy donut. You can’t go wrong with any flavor. I personally like the chocolate sea salt or the dark chocolate coconut. The donut melts in your mouth and doesn’t leave you feeling super bloated and crappy like other donut places.
They also have freshly squeezed orange juice and grapefruit juice, my favorite.
They can often be very busy, sometimes with lines out the door, but be patient because these donuts are worth it!

A must for donut lovers. Or anyone for that matter. They present the most enticing, warm donuts you will find. My favorites are the lemon, plain glazed, and of course the dark chocolate sea salt. I’ve never gone in there and not gotten the sea salt.
A tip: When you go, try any of them and you won’t be disappointed but ask at the counter for the ones that just came out of the oven. They are the freshest tastiest most creative donuts you will have!
Oh and if you want a little more, splurge and get the egg pesto breakfast sandwich. Amazing!

I was visiting a friend in Portland and we arrived early in the morning. This was the first place she took me and I absolutely loved it. Their donut assortment was so creative I was blown away. I ordered the chai donut which had the perfect amount of spice. My friend got the salted caramel chocolate donut and also loved it! I loved the inside. It was adorable and even had little couches to sit down. If you’re in Portland, this is a great spot to stop by!

The dark chocolate sea salt donut is the best I have ever had. Though you really can’t go wrong with any of their flavors!

It’s a landmark in downtown Portland and a must for tourists. These are heavy thick potato donuts. My favorite is the sea salted chocolate one. They are just so good and a special treat you can only enjoy once in a good while

Worth waiting in line for. There are few things as magical as a holy donut warm from the oven freshly glazed on a cold day. They are moist, soft, pillowy and just sweet enough.
The chocolate sea salt donut is divine. Another hero in my book is their frittata sandwich, slab of soft egg frittata on a toasted english muffin slathered with pesto, super delicious. Even with a line out the door I have always been greeted with a smile, I think it’s the owners father behind the line (at least who I see on the weekends) he is a total doll and is aways a joy to see just because he is so friendly.
This is a Portland must visit if you only have a few days in the city.

I didn’t really think I’d love a potato doughnut but these things are seriously good. Definitely different tasting than a regular doughnut but I’m a fan. No complaints here.

Interesting concept. Mashed potato donuts. If you are a donut aficionado/​foodie, this place is worth a visit for the uniqueness of the recipe. If you are hungry, this place is a safe bet for you. If you’re curious about mashed potato donuts, this place is also for you. Otherwise, though, I could see how some people would be disappointed or think this was overrated. I mean, I’m not craving the donuts. I don’t want to eat mashed potato donuts all the time now. But hey, cool idea.
The line is always out the door and it is hectic inside. There a probably about 5 tables that seem to be constantly occupied. Lots of kids. The line moves quickly. Oh and they had delicious hot apple cider.

I’d honestly never heard of a potato donut until I visited Portland, but I’m very grateful that I’ve learned of them!
A bit heavier than your «usual» donut, thanks to the potato, you don’t necessarily feel more weighed down after having one. They’re simply more dense and you don’t need to eat more than one to feel satisfied with your treat.
The Holy Donut has mastered the art of potato donuts. Their variety of flavors is drool-​worthy even when you read it. Also, and even more important, the staff is super-​nice, the interior is welcoming, and I was impressed that they still had a good selection at 2pm on a Friday.

So listen, well I guess I should say read, these donuts are good, they are. I am totally on board with the natural coloring and sweetness and hat definitely comes through. But I was a little disappointed to find out these aren’t particularly healthier than regular donuts. It’s the recipe for a donut with potato, because apparently donuts didn’t have enough carbs on their own .
But really, donuts are so good, but I felt a little dooped by the marketing.
Favorites from our visit, and I will only lost three because I don’t want you to know how many donuts my boyfriend and I had, oh man, Unilocal helps me to identify my gluttonous behaviors, lol.
Maple — AMAZING, you’re in Maine, get the maple.
Pomegranate — really tasty, love the fruit flavor.
Chocolate — need I say more?
Definitely a must try if you are visiting.

Oh Holy Donut — I had to come back to Portland and check out your second location!
Arrived at 7:50am on a Sunday and they promptly opened at 8:00am. The line was already down the block by the time we entered in.
Staff is super friendly and know how to organize your donuts so they don’t stick to each other.
You HAVE to get:
Maple, maple bacon and the ricotta filled (ginger)…amazing!
Come early and come hungry, you won’t be disappointed.

I enjoyed my donut and thanks to fellow Unilocalers I ordered the dark chocolate sea salt donut.
This could be the novelty of eating a potato donut or I may have been starving but I think could eat these every day if I lived in Portland.
I’m from out of town so that won’t be happening.

Disappointed that they didn’t have blueberry donuts when I visited in early October but the Maine Apple donut was a satisfying replacement. Their donuts are made with mashed potatoes and have a dense, cake-​like texture. My soy cappuccino was delicious as well!

Totally worth the hype! And most certainly not your everyday, ordinary donut. Grab your nearest cupcake it and smash it into the wall, because it’s time for the donut revolution!

Oh Good Lord what did I do? I have committed the ultimate sin of not buying a dozen of these immaculate holy babies and instead only buying two (2 for $ 5). Please Lord forgive me, but I promise to return and get more.
Holy Donut literally made me say «Holy Donut» upon biting into the ever so flavorful Bacon Cheddar Doughnut. Oh Good Lord I can still taste it. Who the hell makes a Bacon Cheddar doughnut?! These guys and damn it I am hooked. I wanted to eat half to save some for later. No, that wasn’t even possible. Before I could blink I had devoured the immaculate creation and it was gone. Sigh…
Seating may be hard to come by, but it doesn’t matter because once you take a bite of their doughnuts it’s almost like you and the doughnut are the only two things in existence, until you completely eat the little guy and then you’re back to reality.
In addition to the Bacon Cheddar I also tried the Dark Chocolate Sea Salt. It was heaven. The richness of the chocolate along with the texture of the dough… hmmm the sea salt was a nice touch. I normally am not a fan of sea salt on my chocolate, but this was not over done.
This was my first encounter with potato doughnuts and I have to say I was absolutely blown away. I came in with no real expectations besides thinking, «It’s a doughnut — can’t really mess up a doughnut» Well, angels sang and the orchestra played because this was a truly «holy» experience. I will definitely be back.
Customer Service: Very very very friendly and helpful staff. They cracked jokes even though there was a line to the door. Very accommodating and informative.

I don’t get as excited about donuts as most people do. I know that they are in vogue right now, the «new cupcake», or whatever the food bloggers like to say, but they just don’t do anything special for me. At the Holy Donut they sell potato donuts, another strike for me. I’m not really a potato person either. I ate A LOT of mashed potatoes as a child, and I really try to avoid them as an adult. So what am I doing giving a 5-​star review to a potato donut shop? I may not love potatoes, and I may not love donuts, but when the potato and the donut come together and make a potato donut baby… now that is something to get excited about!
I was in love at first melt-​in-​my-​mouth, grease filled bite. The first one I tried was the cheddar and bacon filled donut (go big or go home, right?). They keep these in a warmer, so they stay hot, tender and greasy for your eating pleasure. I was shocked how much I loved this donut. Somehow they managed to balance out the sweet and savory flavors perfectly, so that it did not seem over-​the-​top in either category. You could really tell the quality of the ingredients used in this one, they know their cheddar in New England.
My second favorite flavor was the blueberry. They mix Maine blueberries in with the potato dough, and then cover it with a light glaze. Perfection! The sweet potato was also good, as were the salty chocolate and the lemon. The chocolate donuts taste a bit like brownies. All of the flavors are best when eaten fresh, they are much less tender if you let them sit. Thank goodness they are cranking out donuts all day long, the ones I got for a late afternoon snack were still very fresh!
You can go ahead and keep your lobster, Maine. Just give me all your donuts!

HOLY DONUTS IS RIGHT. Just when you think you’ve seen it all in the donut world, in comes the Potato Donut.
The Holy Donut was at the top of my list of places to try in Portland, ME. I entered the shop excited like a kid in a candy shop and was hit with glorious sugar-​y sweet scents that filled the air. It was quite packed even towards the late afternoon and wanted to grab myself the good flavors while they lasted. (They close once they sell their last donut… no old leftovers here!)
They use real Maine Potatoes in all of their batters (both regular and sweet) which is really neat. All of their other ingredients are pure and natural. There’s no artificial colors or flavoring which I love. When you bite into it, you can really taste the difference.
Here’s some of the flavors I tried:
–Toasted Coconut with a Coconut Milk Glaze
–Dark Chocolate Sea Salt
–Sweet Potato Ginger
–Vegan Cinnamon Sugared
–Blueberry Glazed
My top favorites were by far the Dark Chocolate Sea Salt & Blueberry. It was incredibly fresh and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the potato dough! It was light, fluffy and held the glazes/​toppings well. Although the donuts here in NY are excellent, they need to seriously try out the potato route. This is the kind of food that has its own agenda. I’m hooked.

I had this spot bookmarked for our trip to Maine. The wifey loves donuts and she wanted to swing by the Holy Donut to try it out. So happy wife, happy life right ?
I did what any good significant other would do in order to avoid the neverending nagging of visiting Maine and not passing by the Holy Donut which she also had bookmarked. (Wife 1 — Erick 0) Now I like sweets and I’ll eat a donut here and there. I looked at there pictures on Unilocal and it reminded me of Mojo Donuts in Pembroke Pines, FL where we are from. So I was actually looking forward to visiting there shop.
Entering the shop it had a very cozy and home feel. They had an aray of donut selections like Maple Bacon, Chocolate with sea salt, Maine special which has blue berry on it and much more. I am sucker for coconut so I went with the Chocolate and Toasted Coconut and a Espresso shot.
Coffee was average. Then again it’s an espresso shot not much you can do there but it was good. Then the donut ! The magic hour had arrived. I saw her take a bite of her Chocolate and Vanilla and her face lit up like a christmas tree so I figured Score one for the good guys !!! I took a bite of mine and … Blah!
Failure. Epic… The donut was stale and didn’t have much flavor at all. The chocolate didn’t jump out at me like in other donuts and the cream and coconut were ok but not mesmerizing. I wasn’t impressed honeslty. I ate the cream and coconut to sweeten my coffee and called it a day. I honestly think maybe I just got a dud because based on the other reviews there donuts seems to be good. I would have tried another but there are so many spots to hit in down we simply didn’t have the time. Hospitality and staff were great, just didn’t like the product.
