University Club of Portland

I have been a member now a year and a half. It’s a great place to get involved. If you have some event series or love of art or food or something special you’ve always wanted to do then sign up and get something going with other members in an «affinity group.» I started a film group and we’re having dinner and watching documentaries every couple of months and it’s been awesome! Lots of one-​of-​a-​kind events that make it a pleasure to belong.

Always a great atmosphere always a find dining experience with the comraderie of other members. I hate to single out a particular person above the others but he just does more. George is alwaya there to recognize you and make you feel like a regular no matter how often you are there.
Food has been irregular as they have changed chefs a couple times. In a good way. The selections are always changing yet always coming up winners. There is aomething to be said for a menu that has surprises. I would guess they will find their footing and get some establiahed favorites be the fiundation. Breakfast is served. Finally a meal I have felt was ignored at the Club. Its the meal where business is done. Thanks for adding it to the opportunties to meet. Happy hour is a treat not to be missed. Food menu is right on for light bites. Often music and or entertainment. Great holiday parties. Well worth the cost of admission.

Service is good but very slow serving of food. They must only have one microwave or the head lettuce takes too long to chop for the lovely gourmet salads. I keep telling my husband that I don’t see the attraction to this place. Nothing fresh here but the alcohol. They serve stiff drinks so maybe by the time you order food quality and service don’t matter.

Raw lamb. Slow service. Management who don’t listen to complaints. Sysco food… Nothing seems to be made in house. I think members get caught up in the veneer of the club not the true service and quality. Below par. Especially for a university club… Comes in frozen, goes into the microwave then goes to the customer… Four people in our party were served raw lamb… Four. Health department… Are you listening?
Think I’m filing a complaint.

Best drinks and bar in the State of Oregon. Tremendous staff.

Very nice venue for get togethers and other functions. The University Club is an urban country club catering to Portland’s upper eschelon.
The food was decent (catered food is never spectacular) but the overall interior design is cozy and welcoming.

The UC is a downtown living room for those of us who live in the suburbs. The library, a tranquil place to have coffee in the morning or a martini in the afternoon… sitting by the roaring fire and chatting with a friend or catching up on the newest books. The service is perfection and the whole ambience takes me back to a gentler age and a time when you had the freedom to relax and enjoy special friendships in a beautifully appointed venue. The UC is one of our city’s most delightful treasures.

Just walk through the door and you get a sense of the history of this wonderful club. The UC has been around since 1898 and this club house was built in 1913.
The UC has many great events all year long — The Boxing Smoker, The James Beard Dinner, The Wild Game Dinner, The Annual Meeting, the list goes on and on.
The UC remains a wonderful oasis of charm and class in downtown Portland.

Only place in town that 65 year old will be called «kiddo». Nice food and they always decorate beautifully around Christmas. But too stuffy for me to be a regular.

The hubby is a member here, and as he likes to put it, the deals on wine, almost pay for the membership.
Hosting any type of event here is fantastic! I honestly cannot recall any other venue that is so quick, and even happy to make last minute adjustments. The morning of, I had to double the food and beverage order due to a flood of late RSVP’s. Not a problem. They even scrambled to give us extra after we ran out. Yes, the food is that good.
Love the mix of elegant old world tradition mixed with vibrant and creative people.

History with a dash of elegance and a little bit of mystery in the heart of downtown. The University Club is a social club founded in 1898. It is a members-​only establishment, but their banquet rooms are used for meetings, weddings and special events. And, it may be haunted!
The building was constructed in 1913 for the club and is a gorgeous example of Jacobean revival architecture. Dark woods engraved with the university crests of the founding members, fine art and traditional design. There is an elegant library on the second floor and several fireplaces throughout the building with high back chairs where I imagine people sipping brandy and having very civilized conversations. No wonder it is on the National Registry of Historic Structures. At the same time it is very Portland — not too fancy — just understated elegance.
The building and décor have changed very little in 90 years and there is a dress code (no t-​shirts or athletic wear) and cell phones are not permitted except in these cool little phone booths. All of the food (light appetizers and desserts) prepared by the in-​house caterers was very good.
It is such a cool old building that I had to restrain myself from knocking on the walls in search of secret passageways and dumbwaiters. My favorite tidbit is from their website, «it is rumored that two or three ghosts walk the halls at night, climbing sleepily up the stairs to their rooms and playing squash on the long-​gone third floor court.» Sleepover, anyone?
