US Post Office

I was having a great Monday and then I decided to ruin it by going to the USPS. Why is there a 20,000 sq. ft. facility and only 1-2 people working the counter? This was on tax day, one of the busiest mail days of the year. The line was 30 people deep. If you want to see America on it's knees go to the post office. America you had a good run, it's time to leave this up to UPS, FedEx OnTrack and the rest.

This place is almost always packed! Could you blame them though? It’s the hub for PDX mail. I don’t mind waiting in like at the post office, just because I always expect there to be one! So come expecting one and you’ll leave happy.
The staff are so great, the are stern when necessary but sweet if you are. They will help you if you ask, so don’t shout, they are coming!
It’s not the cleanest… but it’s a post office, do you need it to be shiny? They have a parking lot, and they have a lot of packing supplies spread out in their lobby for you.

What a positive experience today as I mailed my parcel. Line was only couple minutes and they also have a self mail kiosk in the hall.

I get random peoples mail that i dont even live near. I have letters people tell me to watch out for not show up. My mailbox has a lock on it… which leads me to believe this post office is terrible.

If you want to mail a package don’t go here! They are unhelpful and not very friendly! I ended up leaving and going to fed Ex around the corner. Which was an awesome experience! As I was leaving they said «you’ll be back» No I won’t! Work on your customer service!

I really think the last time I was here was probably around 2000 to 2001. I’m here today on a Saturday to make sure I have a Saturday postmark on a few items of work-​related mail and this is the only post office open in my general area. Not many people around at 4:30 in the afternoon, so I was basically in and out in less than five minutes. My clerk looked very tired and I was tired, so we both wanted to get this thing done. As I headed back to the MAX stop, I turned and looked back at the Broadway Bridge, and it took my breath away. That large tarped-​up bridge looming above the still fairly industrial neighborhood around the post office on an overcast afternoon. Wow, too bad you can’t plan for these sorts of things, because surely if little movies were running through my head, someone from Hollywood and the Oregon Film Office would have seen the possibilities of some unbelievable scenery as backdrop as well. Of course, I didn’t take a picture, damn, but nonetheless I’m really grateful for the quickness of service I received and that I didn’t have to travel further.

One more to add to the Stay away from Marilyn club. This is the second time I have had trouble with her, the first time she kicked me out because my son was crying. This time she accused me of abusing her because the package I set on the counter slid and hit her. She made someone come over and SUPERVISE the transaction. Everytime I opened my mouth I was told to keep my opinion to myself. She was slow, rude, unhelpful. I will be avoiding this Post office at all cost.

My review is strictly for Marilyn. Ms. Marilyn, what the hell happened to you that made you such a horribly pissed off individual?! You are by far the WORST USPS employee I have ever encountered (and there are a lot of them)! Is it your life mission to make others miserable? If so, job well done! I agree with so many others below. AVOID MARILYN at all costs! She’s a union worker who’s not ever going to be reprimanded because our union system is totally screwed. Her supervisor should be ashamed for allowing her to be such a disgusting human being, giving that branch such a horrible reputation. Marilyn, I have hope for you. You should retire, or find a job that doesn’t involve you and the public. You could be a decent human being if you tried just a little.

This postal office is the best one I’ve been to so far in Portland. I live closer to the inner SE location but I keep coming here for good customer service.

Worst customer service. Guy at counter wouldn’t even raise his head to answer a question.

I only use this location occasionally. Usually when I just need to drive thru to drop mail in the box. But every once in awhile, I need to go inside fire something. I always dread this, because being the «main» branch in Portland this place gets really busy, yet their lot is tiny!
For years it has baffled me how the largest post office branch in town has the smallest lot. There are less parking spaces here than many of the small neighborhood branches. And street parking is metered, so either customers drive in circles until a space in the lot opens up, or pay to park on the street :(
Unfortunately, this is one of the only places in Portland to get a (new) passport processed. The hours for doing this are very limited, not normal post office hours. So, be prepared to wait.

This isn’t FedEx or UPS! They’re a government agency. With that said, I think they do a great job at customer service. If you have a question, they always answer, and will send you to the side to correct if it was an error, help the next person in line, and then return to you. Thats a pretty good system especially when the line gets long … and its gets long … You’re getting great customer service, and they’re still working to move the line along. Id say ²⁄₃ of the people at the counter are the same every time I go in, and I can’t think of a negative experience. But if your the type of person who thinks you are going to get waited on hand and foot, head to FedEx and pay the extra price.
Tip: Bring your own box tape! (or they make you buy a roll)

I was sending in my very first passport application and had no idea what to expect. I went to the south waterfront location and left furious. Even though I had all of the right information I decided to leave because the man who helped me was so frustrating and unprofessional. So, when I came back to the Hoyt location I was a little bit worried. Turns out I had no reason to be worried at all. I called early to make sure they were doing passports and I was sent to someone who went out of her way to go next door to different department to ask if and when the Hoyt street would be doing passports. The lady that helped me out, Vi, was really nice, quick, and professional. I am so happy that I went to the Hoyt location! From start to finish the staff was awesome!

Stopped by this post office to mail some letters on vacation. Huge post office. They also mailed my letter faster than anywhere I have been dropped it off 5 pm before flight to Atlanta. Letter arrived in Atlanta the next day!

The lines here are so long and it’s just really inefficient how they handle these lines. It’s driving me ape shit. First bad review I’ve given on Unilocal.About to go postal. WTF is this? Christmas in June?

This review only pertains to the passport services at this location. There is only one person «trained» to handle passports, and they are likely to change or cut the hours, even while you’re standing in line, documents in hand. Visit the county building on SE Hawthorne instead – but make sure you’ve got cash. The extra fee is worth the more dependable service.

I actually love this place and think 99% of the employees are great people to deal with, hard workers and competent at their job.
But I must do my good deed for the year, from one human to another: avoid Marilyn at all costs. If she calls on you, kindly let the person behind you go (it’s not nice to send another man into battle, but better him than me). Marilyn is the worst employee I’ve ever dealt with in my entire life. This isn’t an exaggeration. This isn’t poetic license. This is pure truth, raw and undiluted. She is notoriously difficult to deal with as you can see by the reviews below. I’ve spoken to most other employees here about her and everyone agrees, she’s terrible. Her laziness is borderline comedic. I’ve never seen someone so slow, so lifeless, so completely unaware. She moves like a hi-​def slow motion replay. She was so rude, unhelpful and lazy and amassed so many complaints that she was ‘sent away’ to a different post office for nearly 6 months.
Oh I cannot express the glee those 6 months were. Waltzing in to the friendly faces who could quickly process an order. Those 6 months were heaven. Imagine the feeling in my gut when I walked in one day to see Marilyn back behind the counter, the exact same smug look, the same stupid glasses, the same Sloth-​like speed, the same condescending voice. It was like I had been living in a fantastic dream world for half a year only to find myself rudely awakened back to a sad, depressing reality.
So yes, Marilyn is back. Hide yo kids, hide yo wife, hide every single person you love from Marilyn’s counter. No matter how good of a day you’re having, she knows just the right way to make you snap. It’d be impressive if it wasn’t so enraging.
I once asked how Marilyn got away with so much and was told that if her superior complained then Marilyn would go to the workers union. I don’t want to get political or anything, but when someone can get away with such poor performance, something with the system is broken.

This is the most horrible place ever, not only is the service slow but the people that work there are brain less. Will never use the USPS ever again. If i were you i would avoid this place like the plague.

This is the main branch of the United States Post Office in Portland, Oregon! It feels like an airport inside. Their parking is annoying, kind of a one way in, one way out ordeal. It always seems busy.
I had to mail a package and thought I’d give it a try. I walked in and saw a large line for a live clerk. Panic no more, I figured I could use the self serve machine. What a time saver. I read the terminal and followed the instructions. This a very handy feature. I couldn’t figure out how to buy stamps, they called them a name I wasn’t familiar with, I jumped off machine so the folks behind me could use it.
Pluses, You can use the drive up mail boxes, their last pick up is 9pm. There’s a great bar a block up the street, Low Brow Lounge.

Do you know what I love about this post office? It’s open 24 a day with a drop box where you can weigh your items, buy postage, and put them in the box for mailing. This feature has been a huge help because I can drop things off in the early morning hours on the way to work. It only takes a couple of minutes, and doesn’t require a wait in line.
I have to say, the few times I have interacted with the employees they have been friendly and helpful.

I have mixed feelings. I guess service depends on the time and the person at the counter.
I have only been here once around 1PM Thursday… The service was fast. However the first person I on the counter I talked to, she was was not much helpful and seemed annoyed.
I went back and wrote addresses on my package and when I returned to the counter another person dealt with me. He was very clear about the best way to send my package and get a self return envelope. And he did that in like a minute…
